Much blame has been laid on Dave Wannstedt and Jay Fiedler. Inevitably, the coach and QB get more credit for both winning and losing than any other position. It comes with the territory.

The truth is that the Dolphins, more so than Wannstedt and Fiedler, have been mediocre for a very long time. Twenty years to be precise. As most of you know, we have only had one losing season since 1984, a fact you have to be proud of as a Dolfan, but we have never been a legitimate Super Bowl threat in twenty years.

Don Shula, Dave Wannstedt, and Jimmy Johnson all have one thing in common, none of them have drafted very well. Jimmy was the master of the middle rounds, but did virtually nothing with the 1st round. Shula and Wannstedt drafted even worse during their tenures. Great teams are built around the draft and that deficit may be the biggest reason that has produced mediocrity for such a long time with the Dolphins.

Most of us have forgotten about the rule change a few years ago that reduced the number of playoff teams. The Dolphins were making a living off the extra wild card berth. The Dolphins are no worse than they were during the playoff years, we just don't have that extra playoff berth to exploit. Factor in Bill Bellichick who has been microwave hot the last three years and the Dolphins no longer could hide behind the free pass the NFL gave us every year into the playoffs.

We have either had the great QB who could produce points or we have had the great defense and running game that could prevent scoring and eat clock, but we have not had both for a very long time, thus this team has been trapped in mediocrity for 20 years. I think between this long stretch of being good, but not great and the ultra boring offense of Wannyball, most of us are just simply uninspired by this team. After all, we were spoiled with perfect seasons, the best coach and QB the NFL has ever seen, and no losing seasons to endure.

I agree with most Dolfans...Fiedler should be a backup and Wanny is too stubborn to let the experts run the offense. His ego and need to be in control has killed him and will ultimately buy him a one-way ticket out of Miami. You have to know your gifts, and offense is not a gift that Wannstedt can claim.

Like an old pump that just needs to be flushed out, this team and its 20 years of mediocrity, has gotten old and needs a good flushing. The problem with Fiedler and Wannstedt is that they haven't been around here long enough to understand that.

That was probably the best post ever on this board.

Well said 57!

It's not about having a stupid winning record each year, it's about playing in the Super Bowl,

You make very valid points. Although I don't think Miami has been mediocre. Medicore is going 8-8 every year and just getting above .500. This team, as you have said lived on Wild Cards for a while which means they were good, just not good enough.

Hmmm imagine that.. a Pats fan whos franchise posted 20+ losing seasons saying winning seasons dont matter

well

I think you have reson in a few points, since our last win in SB, the team was a team with two side , someone very good and the other really bad, A great offense with Marino and company but a very bad deffense (until his last years), and latter we have a great defense (3 seson a runer or 1000 y) but a terribole ofense...

But a few years with Dan Miami was a contender maybe not a Championchip team, ....

ANd for the drafts, Shula drafts a good ofense players

I think with JJ we have a very good years of Drafts: Zach, Taylor, Madison,

But I think that with Rick S, (GM) heí tarying to balance the team, knaw we have Chambers, Randy, Booker, (I hope Boston next year), a very good prospect of QB (AJ) and I think that Carey and Hadnot will be very good players, I also hope Lamar could be a good RB for us,and the defense is getting old, but with Morlon, Pope, Bue, Poole, I think that in the future we could have a balance team , a conteder team .....

I think this year will be a prepartion for young players and be a better team ( I hope with a new HC 9) year
Go fins....

There was no rule that reduced the # of playoff teams. They added another division which made 4 div. winners and two wild card teams, instead of 3 div. winners and 3 wild card teams. It is harder to make the playoffs though without winning your division.

It's easier to win your division with 3 competitors instead of 4 or even 5, though.

well they say that a team will reflect the attitude of the head coach. I agree, this team needs flushed out and given a new attitude. I'm hoping the O gets pissed off at being the laughing stock of the league and starts kicking some ***. Hopefully AJ can be that lightning rod that gets it all started.

id rather be fighting and having a chance than where we've been for the past 13 years.

Excellent post. My thoughts exactly. We have not been to the AFC Championship since 1992. 12 years since we even sniffed the Super Bowl.

This team has had many exciting wins and losses, as well as many close games. there are a ton of memories with this team.

You dont get that being just mediocre over the years.

I mean would you rather watch a by the numbers, I know whats going to happen in the end as soon as this started type of movie?

Or would you rather watch a movie that offers things youve never seen before, moments of excitement, and great performances, but overall just doesn't come together in all aspects, especially the end, to be the best movie of the year?

Because it's the almost great movie that the Dolphins have been over the years.

We can be proud we haven't been like say, the Bengals, for the past years. It's just now after all those dark years they are starting to show something. If what he had was mediocrity, then I'll take it.

While i agree for the most part of a lot of this. Shula and CO had great drafts in the 70's leading up to the 80's .

Jimmy wouldn't have been too bad had he not tried to draft so many running backs in so many years and not pay attention to the O_line which is where everything starts. Defensively he did ok. Wanny's drafts for the most part have sucked. Which is why he doesn't get to draft anymore.
