Much blame has been laid on Dave Wannstedt and Jay Fiedler. Inevitably, the coach and QB get more credit for both winning and losing than any other position. It comes with the territory.
The truth is that the Dolphins, more so than Wannstedt and Fiedler, have been mediocre for a very long time. Twenty years to be precise. As most of you know, we have only had one losing season since 1984, a fact you have to be proud of as a Dolfan, but we have never been a legitimate Super Bowl threat in twenty years.
Don Shula, Dave Wannstedt, and Jimmy Johnson all have one thing in common, none of them have drafted very well. Jimmy was the master of the middle rounds, but did virtually nothing with the 1st round. Shula and Wannstedt drafted even worse during their tenures. Great teams are built around the draft and that deficit may be the biggest reason that has produced mediocrity for such a long time with the Dolphins.
Most of us have forgotten about the rule change a few years ago that reduced the number of playoff teams. The Dolphins were making a living off the extra wild card berth. The Dolphins are no worse than they were during the playoff years, we just don't have that extra playoff berth to exploit. Factor in Bill Bellichick who has been microwave hot the last three years and the Dolphins no longer could hide behind the free pass the NFL gave us every year into the playoffs.
We have either had the great QB who could produce points or we have had the great defense and running game that could prevent scoring and eat clock, but we have not had both for a very long time, thus this team has been trapped in mediocrity for 20 years. I think between this long stretch of being good, but not great and the ultra boring offense of Wannyball, most of us are just simply uninspired by this team. After all, we were spoiled with perfect seasons, the best coach and QB the NFL has ever seen, and no losing seasons to endure.
I agree with most Dolfans...Fiedler should be a backup and Wanny is too stubborn to let the experts run the offense. His ego and need to be in control has killed him and will ultimately buy him a one-way ticket out of Miami. You have to know your gifts, and offense is not a gift that Wannstedt can claim.
Like an old pump that just needs to be flushed out, this team and its 20 years of mediocrity, has gotten old and needs a good flushing. The problem with Fiedler and Wannstedt is that they haven't been around here long enough to understand that.
