Trade Madison for a QB Now!

First of all, I think that it would be a horrible idea for us to trade Sam Madison. The cap hit alone would be somewhere along the lines of 6 or 7 million. Not to mention we have very little DEPTH at CB as it is right now and he is one of the last guys that we could afford to lose right now. And I highly doubt that you would be able to find a Franchise longterm productive QB to trade for with a 31 year old CB on the downfall of his career. Also, if you're looking for an IMMEDIATE win now kind of QB, that's going to be hard to now considering that we're reaching the last week of preseason and that you can't expect someone to come in now and be the starter and be productive, they'd be behind Gus and AJ on the depth chart. If you wanted to do something like this, you would have definitely done it a long time ago during the offseason but we can't trade Madison because it would cost us around 6-7 million in dead cap and it wouldn't be the smartest idea considering the lack of depth we have a CB as it is. It was hard enough losing Surtain, but we should be lucky to still have Madison because there was a chance that we could have lost them both and we would DEFINITELY be a lot worse situation than we are now.

So... now that I've stated I'm totally 100% against the idea of trading Madison I'm curious about what his future will be. He still has two years left on his contract I believe. He is making $3,420,000 currently this year and is do to make the EXACT same amount next year. I feel that if he has a sucessful season this year, he will definitely be around next year. But the last year of his contract in 2007, he's due to make $4,500,000... that's going to be pretty steep especially considering he's on the downlfall of his carrer and will be around 33 at that time. What will be Sam's future here in Miami? Will it ever get to the point where we have to release him? What do we do when his contract is up? Would it be a good idea to consider the possiblity of franchising him? Or do we just let him go VIA FA once his contact is up? I think it may be too early to tell but I'm hoping he'll definitely be back here AT LEAST next season.

There are 2 good reasons we can't do that. 1) We have bad depth at corner as it is, and 2) There is no quarterback that we could get in that trade that would help us at all this year. If you haven't notices it is a tough system to learn for a quarterback. Even if we got Rivers (who's contract is way too big for us to take on) then he wuld not be any better in this system than the QB's on our roster until probably week 12.

Well first of all, I think to trade Madison would be absolutely ridiculous and I'm not sure how much that would hurt us in Dead Cap but I do not support that idea whatsoever. So bypassing that... I am just curious... What are we going to do next year? Do we franchise Madison (assuming we work out a deal with McMichael because I don't feel we should franchise McMike or overpay for him), do we attempt workout a reasonable contract, or do we just let him go through FA?
I think we should give Madison a chance to retire a fin. I think he'll pull a bowens and take a paycut to stay here, esp. if he buys into the new defense, and loves it, I don't see why he wouldn't want to stay.

For years, Madison was one of the league's better locked down (one on one ) corners. His play has dropped significantly (but not his salary). Zero interceptions last year! With Saban's defensive emphasis on zone coverage and run support, Madison is really getting exposed. Sam hasn't tackled anyone yet on running plays and of the few big running plays against us during preseason, guess who they're running at? When Denver and their vaunted running game comes to town, we can only pray for 90 degree weather & 90% humidity. Obviously, Sam can still play and would be a great pickup for the right defense, but our quarterback situation is arguably the worst in the league. Rather than speculate, (ad nauseum) Feely or Frerotte. Nick this team needs a Quarterback!:D Madison has trade value. :yell: Let's do it, Nick.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! More talk about trading for a QB...........stop the insanity.

I agree, that is what I would love to happen. Sometime not too far later on down the road, I'm hoping he restructures his contract (2007 seems to be the most likely year) and I do hope they he buys into Saban's defensive scheme and loves it. I would love for Madison to retire as Phin, and I really hope that's what happens.

Yeah, lets do it!

Wait... don't we take a cap hit to trade him? Isn't it pretty big? Aww hell... it's worth it, after all his tackling is HORRIBLE. So we go 4-5 million over the cap. Just cut Feeley and Frerrote to save 1.1 million, we've got a nice new QB after all. Ok... just 3.9 million left. Cut Larry Chester and that takes us down to 3.3 million. Depth? What do you need that for?! WE'VE GOT A NEW QB!!!!!!!!111111oneoneone.

Ok... we're getting desparate now... we've got to cut people who are going to kill our cap next year.... but hell it gets us under this year, no? Cut Reggie Howard and save 2.25 million. Down to 1.5 million now, things are getting better! Cut Seau and save 1 million. Sorry Vonnie Holliday... we love you but we need the cap room... We save 600k, and that leaves us 100k under. Phew!

Ok... wait, what do you mean we have to pay that new QB we just aquired?!

So that leaves us with crap for depth, not to mention that we've got Travis Daniels and Mario Edwards starting for us at CB. How well does Mario Edwards tackle? I'm willing to bet no better than Madison. Who do we cut to make cap room for the QB we traded for? Might as well be Jason Taylor... seeing as we're screwed for the next 10 years anyway.

Go go "I dislike this player so that must mean we can cut/trade him with no ill effects" threads!

Wait a sec.... Dave, is that you?

You took everything I wanted to say and laid it out in a more entertaining fashion that I could have....

I nominate this for post of the year...

I nominate the "trade Sam Madison" idea as dumb idea of the century.

Vince Young is a running back...he had a good Bowl game and he is the second coming.

He is not an NFL Q.B.

You have got to be joking right

IMO Madison is still the best Cb we have on the roster,he may not be the fastest, but he's still good on coverage, and if he is starting to lose a step I dont see why he just cant move to a safety position.
