Trade next years first rounder?

The chances of landing a QB this season are remote at best. Next season will depend a lot on what SD does with their QB situation. If they keep Brees, Rivers will probably be available. If they let Brees go, we can either sign him as an unrestricted free agent or sign him and pay the price if he is franchised or tagged as a transitional player. I would think that if that were the case, Saban and Mueller would negotiate a lower price in a trade than pay the 2 picks. Davey could be an option also.

oh and his 18 mil of him and the money spent on edwards could have been used to help pay surtain, and the gordon 3rd rounder could also have been used for a first day QB.

Almost every player you draft is developmental, especially QB's. I would feel much more comfortable with hillip Rivers then most of the QB's coming out next year. Its not like this guy is a former 4th round pick. He was picked in the top 5. Hes much less of a risk then a straight our rookie.

Nothing you said makes sense. You contradict yourself in every sentence. Rivers hasn't done anything to make anyone feel comfortable with him. He has the same exact risk as any other QB taken in the top 5.

And thats kinda what I was getting at. Obviously Im not suggesting a #1 for a previous #5. Im talking a top round pick from two years ago. Who's contract would be cheaper..and less of a risk.

And would the fans be anymore pissed if Rivers didnt pan out...than if we drafted a QB..who ended up being a bust?

????
Next year Rivers will have been in the NFL for two years. Do you honestly think he is learning nothing in training camp, preseason games, from his quarterbacks coach, or from the veteran players on his team? His learning curve will be alot smaller then almost any rookie QB.

Learning isn't the same as actually getting playing time. What is he suppose to learn? The Chargers playbook and system? How would that help him in Miami?

Obvously learning isnt the same as gameday experience, but I still think its easier going from one NFL system to another then it is coming from a college system to an NFL system. ALso whos to say rees wont go down this year and Rivers gets some playing time?

Then Rivers will either look good and the Chargers keep him letting go of Brees. Or he'll look bad and no one will trade for him.

I doubt it will be as black and white as that. Who knows myabe Brees will have a pro-bowl season, go down for a game or two, and Rivers comes in and plays good but not great. San Diego will have a very hard decision after next year.

I agree. 2 years w/ SD practicing against NFL caliber players in a pro system gives Rivers a big edge over a college player just coming in.

I say we wait and see where we fall in the draft. If we are anywhere below the top 10 then a trade for Rivers might be better then using the pick on the best college candidate..the key word is...MIGHT. Just have to wait and see what the college QB's do this year.

Good thread

My thoughts exactly.

Everyone's had great responses on both sides of the question proposed. Thanks for not turning this into a slam thread. I think we are all opposed to trading away picks..for the most part.

My theory is that the waters just may be right for a trade like this..at this time.

One..none of the QB's I have seen at this time in the NCAA's lead me to believe they are worthy. The offense Saban is instituting is not a caretaker offense..we need a playmaker...I think we can all agree on.

Rivers fits the mold of someone worth making that trade for. He is signed...so no camp holdouts. He has been seeing the NFL speed in two training camps..and some games. Hes got the release and the arm.

The situation has to be right to trade away a top draft pick. Spielman made dumb trades for project players. Im sorry but I dont see Rivers as a project.
I would rather trade for a young FA Qb like Rivers...because frankly...I dont want to wait the two to three years it will take to develop a rookie QB.
