I do like the premise of the battles, but for me, I'm much more interested in a battle like Matt Roth vs Stocker McDougall. It already started in mini camps, and it's the one thing that really caught my eye. Roth never gives up, and Stock is determined to show his worth.

But that's just me.

Oz...great point...training camp battles can also be on opposite sides of the ball and a guy like McDougle or Roth can really prove something that way also...remember when JT schooled Wade Smith?...and keep up the reports (when Nick lets you in :D )

Nice thread.

I go along with you on the LB battle - it's my most intriguing. All sorts of guys in that group and some more showed some stuff last season but I'd like to see Channing Crowder come in and say (by merit) this is my job!

That said, I think whoever plays QB is going to have the biggest influence on wins/losses so I agree with those who call it most important

Most of the sports writers are now saying maybe a second rounder?
then we can't get him if he goes that high, thats simply too much to invest in a college back-up

the LB battle should be fun... is spragen gonna emerge? is a healthy moore gonna step it up? is the rookie crowder gonna just dominate? who will play where in 3-4s what happens if seau gets hurt?

just a lot of questions and it'll be interesting to see it sorted out

he was a backup because he played behind two all-americans in Patterson and Cody.

The college backup role that is being too readily given to Manny Wright is wearing thin IMO.

still he didn't play that much I'm not knocking him but you can't use a 2nd rounder on a guy who barely played in college. I'm pro Wright so don't knock me I just think that a 2nd rounder is too high for a kid that barely played, a 3rd rounder is more like it

thats like saying using a number 2 pick on a back who didn't even carry the load on his team is too much...

but its about the individual, dont look at him as a backup, just look at his skills and his potential... not about where he was on a depth chart...

Thank you, obviously there was a reason why Patterson and Cody were both gone by the middle of the second round in the last draft.

Now obviously that doesn't mean this guy is a player either, but the fact that he wasn't starting means nothing as well. With those two being seniors his status was exactly where it should have been, the trick will be determining just how good this kid is when you have little actual game film to go by.

I trust Saban will make the right decision.

Brown had alot more production for his team then Wright did for his, I'm not knocking Wright here but you don't see a back-up DT no matter were he played going in the 2nd round, if he entered the regular draft he wouldn't go that high and thats my point

Nice post--I couldn't make up my mind between daniels being #1 CB or whether Roth might beat out Carter at DE. Just think if Roth did, where would that leave carter. I think Roth will probably start as a pass rushing De but you never know. Would Carter move to Dt where we do need help, or would he become a back up to roth and JT. the other was Daniels who i see as taking over from Pat at corner. i dont really think there is anyone else who is fit that can beat him out, howard maybe, but recent reports dont give him much of a chance.

I don't know that you want Roth starting, at least this year...

He has intensity, and he's pretty strong, but he lacks pass rush technique other than the Bull rush, which won't fly in the Pros. He also has trouble reading the play, future starter...probably, but not this year.

one other battle that should be interesting is

Sage Rosenfels v Brock Berlin

Sage is already 27 and might be too old and make too much money to be a developmental QB. And Saban attempted to recruit Berlin, so he does like him.

While DMac vs Carey is interesting and could affect this team for years to come, the QB position is the one we'll all notice and argue about the most. Assuming Nick will play the best, I sure hope it's AJ and he has a breakout year. I certainly have my doubts and don't want him to start if he hasn't legitimately won it, but I hope he does for the good of the team.
