Here is a good link to his drill results and what percentile he was in according to the other LBs in the draft, note he is 99th percentile in the 20 yard shuttle and 80th percentile in the 3 cone drill. His vertical is up there too.

I think McCain is more NFL ready than Tripp, but I like Tripp and he will contribute this year. I'm not sure that we will start 2 rookies at LB.
 
We got him in the 5th round but he expected to go in the 2nd or 3rd. He excelled at most events in the Combine and his record at Montana was excellent - he was the best player on the team. I think that we just got lucky with him going later than expected because he comes from a fairly small college, University of Montana in a small population state. His father and grandfather both played for the Montana Grizzlies and he wanted to be a linebacker for the Grizzlies in Missoula since he was a little boy. He may have had the talent to go anywhere, but this was a 3rd generation family tradition and he honored it in style.
If the coaches think he's ready, let's see what we've got. He's smart, athletic and very hard working. If we had drafted him in the 2nd round there would not be as much conjecture.

If you can believe that Tripp is truly a gem, then I say give him the keys and let him get to work.

Unfortunately, as far as this season goes, having EITHER Misi or Tripp as the captain of the defense is likely to be a limiting factor for us. But, at least the Tripp move gets Wheeler off the field, which is probably the most important move for salvaging this season.
 
that's crazy talk, 'salvaging' the season before the 2nd preseason game based on...

based on what exactly?

Wheeler has to go, he is horrible. The angles he takes are a joke.

Just shows their immense ignorance. How about a 5th rounder from Texas Tech? He did OK.

In nickel, Jenkins can come in and McCain and Misi can come out. In dime, Jenkins can be the only LB.
They may be out of position at times, but that unit has potential. We know what Wheeler and Ellerbe have got. The new guys can't be worse and may as well develop.

At this rate this is pretty much definitely next year's starting lineup.

Have you watched Miami's linebackers play? They'd go undrafted based on how bad they are.

Tripp should absolutely beat out these guys. Either one of 'em.

What I mean is that the linebackers are probably going to be our achilles heel this season, again. Yes, they could possibly even be worse than last season. It will be a shame if the potential of our revamped O-line and new-look offense goes to waste because our defense wasn't able to hold up. Could they improve before the start of the season? Perhaps...and especially Misi, since he's learning a new position. But Wheeler and Ellerbe aren't likely to magically become different players. They have some glaring weaknesses and will be repeatedly exposed.

We could challenge for a playoff spot despite that, sure, but if there is such a glaring issue, why not do something to fix it?

That's what I mean by "salvage" - a 8-8 or 9-7 season would be disappointing (for me), and as it stands right now the thing most likely to keep that record from being better is the LB corps. Even the O-line has already shown it will most likely be better than last year.
 
I didn't watch enough to have a real opinion, but I thought Tripp was considered the 2nd best LB they had last year. Excellent player and very athletic, but at least some of their fans saw another of their LB's as slightly better in college.

I'm pulling for the guy. In this day and age we need a MLB that can both diagnose the run and also cover well against all of those WCO's.

The thing I really like about Tripp is that he also strip he ball and reads coverage. We need some LB's that create takeaways.

Wasn't Ellerbe originally an UDFA?
