In regard to the comparison between Kiko Alonso and Jordan Tripp, from the standpoint of pure athleticism, it isn't very close:

That's not to say that Tripp will be as good as Alonso, but if he's not, it won't be due to a lack of physical tools. If I were Miami, I'd have handled Tripp more like Pittsburgh has been handling Shazier. Pittsburgh knew they got a stud in Shazier, and they knew their other options to be sub-par. I read recently that Shazier had the highest PSPARQ of this draft class - which isn't surprising - and Tripp isn't quite on that level (as an athlete or player), but he's still a borderline elite athlete, a high-character guy, and smart player. Wheeler was horrible last season (as we all know). Put Tripp in the starting line up, and if Wheeler wants to earn his starting job back, that's on him. Instead, you have your best athlete (among the LB's), playing with the 2's and 3's. Tripp at MLB and Misi at SLB instantly makes the D look a lot stronger and more athletic.
Slimm brought up an excellent point about the difference in situations between Jimmie Johnson when he started Thomas and Philbin this season. I do think, though, that Philbin should at least understand that this team more than anything this season needs to look like it's on the cusp. No one expects Miami to win the SB, but for Philbin to keep his job, by the end of the season, you have to believe that Miami can contend in 2015. With Wheeler and Ellerbe as the starting LB's, this D will never be on the cusp of anything worthwhile. Even if Tripp struggles some at MLB, I doubt he will struggle more than Misi would at MLB, and I know that Tripp at MLB and Misi at SLB is a better combination than Misi at MLB and Wheeler at SLB. Even if Miami misses the playoffs, Philbin can keep his job if the team finishes strong and the young players are playing well enough to make Ross and the fan base believe we're close.

I like Tripp and hope he does start and make an impact, but please stop using Thomas as an example of another 5th round pick....Thomas beat out a pro-Bowl caliber player...Tripp would potentially beat out piles of **** to start....
I think you're missing the reason people are mentioning Thomas. There are posters here who are saying that he can't start, because he's a 5th RD pick. Who Tripp beats out compared to who Thomas beats out has nothing to do with Thomas and Tripp. The competition at a given position is beyond a player's control. Luke Kuechly was starting at OLB before Beason went down with an injury, and after that, who was his biggest competition at MLB? Don't think the lack of competition has hurt his prospects any.

I'm a Tripp fan. I have high hopes that he will become a high quality LB whether that ends up being at the Mike or Will (or even down the road at Sam), but the kid isn't polished yet.
Let the staff work with him a bit. Give the Misi at Mike experiment a chance. Let's not shellshock Tripp's confidence by throwing him in day 1 at a position he didn't play in a defense he is still learning against seasoned veterans.
He is excelling against scrubs and vanilla schemes. He doesn't have to make instant reads and adjust his teammates as the QB of the defense when training camp bodies are not showing complex formations and movement. He isn't even facing game plans yet.
There is a lot to learn before he gets a real audition at Mike. Right now, let's enjoy the fact that he is handling the learning curve well and putting his athletic talents on display with generally proper reads and showing pretty decent instincts.
It's a big jump from OLB at Montana to MLB calling the defensive adjustments in a new defense in game 1 against Tom Brady.

tripp got one series in the first half of the falcons game on d and got most his work with the 3rd team...i think it's gonna be quite aggressive for the staff to promote him to the 1's group without seeing him with the 2's extensively probably in trusnicks place at mike...looks best to me at mike solid run fills but didnt see any real presnap read and diag...most everything post snap reactionary
finally alonzo was more instinctual and played more off the los at oregon than tripp did at montana...tripp hunted the ball a lot at or near the los in the little bit of montana work i got to see

I didn't miss the point...people get hard ons for players based off of their performances against other team's third team guys. The reason I bring up his competition (and his result of potentially starting) is because it may not be because he is a great player, but more so due to the lack of overall talent at that position...
His draft position means very little to me....UDFA guys start as rookies in the NFL...

I hope the kid shines, but it seems like we're only one or two pages away ITT from people proclaiming him "BEAST" ... It may be time to back up a tad & try to gain a little perspective.

Nothing matters but a guy's ability to play the game. Wheeler is ALWAYS late. Late making a sack, late closing a lane and getting to a ballcarrier. He so 'late' he might be pregnant. Then, when he gets here, he sloppily hits guys on the head and draws CRUSHING PENALTIES, like he one vs Tampa last year when his late hit kept alive the Tampa drive that took them to midfield, allowed them to pin us deep, and we couldn't score, even though we were only down by 1 point. Wheeler kept 3 of our opponents' key drives alive by hitting a player in the helmet/facemask. I wanted Wheeler cut last year. Watching him vs Atlanta, he was still late. Look at the only drive Atlanta's first unit had. Coulda had a sack to stop a TD drive and force a FG attempt, but Wheeler was late, again. Wheeler hesitates, Dolphins lose.

Yes he did. Beat out Jack Del Rio, but the Fins are so stacked at LB no way the rookie plays, I kid man. Tripp makes plays, that's all. He's got it...

You did! And I remember laughing at the prospect of that, myself. So props to you.
But we'll see, this is only the beginning of preseason, and when wins matter and offenses have their starters in for more than one or two drives, things will get more difficult for Tripp. He's still a late round rookie and needs to develop. But for sure looks like we got a gem, hats off to Hickey.
