Tyler Larsen

I remember watching him in a tape of a Senior Bowl practice. Hageman knocked him on his butt.

Not much of an athlete. Short arms, in fact the shortest wingspan at the combine. Played at Utah State, which as I've mentioned many times is not the ideal region to find offensive linemen. It's finesse football with weakness in the trenches. Doesn't take much to stand out as an offensive linemen in that area.

At least we weren't foolish enough to fall for it in the 4th round again, like Murphy a few years ago. I'm willing to give Larsen a chance but given the combination of factors I don't like his chances.

This team needs great players. Great players. We don't even attempt it. We draft guys who were never rated as high as where they were drafted, and then we want to pretend undrafted guys are the solution. When you've got people atop the franchise who want to patch a 27 year old stadium for hundreds of millions, and brainstorm a motion sickness logo, this is naturally where you end up.

I love early excellence. You always have a chance. Everything tends to drift back to the beginning. Every simpleton lug bar stool fan can knock Michelle Wie for years, and she responds by winning the US Open. You think Tyler Larsen ever was mistaken for that type of talent? He's another chump. Why is there a 5 page thread on an undrafted chump?

Agree in full Awsi that we seem to shy away from the clearly great players, in favour of the solid. If there was a silver lining in the latest draft (and I don't think it was a great one from us by any stretch) it as the nice late round and UDFA pickups we made. But it doesn't excuse some mediocre drafting in the higher rounds and our awful draft history at finding elite players.

But I swear if I read the words "motion sickness logo" one more time I'll be the one throwing up. We get it. It's not great. Build a bridge.

wow!! one play and you have him all figured out. PURE FRIGGIN' GENIUS I TELL YA!!

it is so funny when someone doesnt like a player they grab something like this to condemn them.

funny that he blocked EVERYONE in front of him in the game and his pre game reps were eye opening to the coaches. not mentioned.

i dont know what the kids got. o-line men get the most off the wall, contradictory scouting reports. "good leverage and quick to the second level"........weekness: "not real fast or sure footed. not strong at the point of attack." so which is it?

go through your draft books and see how much this is done. the nfl is FULL of linemen with slow feet, short arms, not strong, cant slide, etc..... . look at the VAST MAJORITY of nfl o-lines and they are not made up of all pros drafted #1 over all. pretty much the opposite. to many guys [like larsen] get knocked because someone see's a clip and theres a play where he doesnt shine and thats it!! bum!! all done!!. but, no one knows the play or the call. how were they coached? so much goes into a lineman other than "me see, me block, daaaaahhhh".

its why so many of these guys look totally different with nfl coaching and better players around them.

Watching those films Fin Thirteen provided and I am not impressed with this guy in the least. He has trouble holding his blocks and lacks intensity. Half the time he is floundering around out there looking for someone to hit.

lacks some awareness...heads not really on a swivel...not always looking for work...pet peeve of mine with offensive linemen...don't stand there find work...i think he will have quite an eye opener dealing with a gap pressure and delayed blitzers as far as pick up

level of competition awsi references makes sense to me...he's a bull no doubt about it...but all that one handed keeping guys at bay stuff you saw against low level comp in college won't work...unless he's superman...feet don't look bad...real strength though and pop on contact with his hands...good short area punch...

off balance and leaning the further down the field he goes...comes down to the athlete...it's more straight linish than anything else...i like the strength and the anchor but the athlete leaves a lot to be desired...

my preference if it's b/t the two would be brenner for the scheme fit and move athlete but it may come down to who's more stout and that's obviously larsen...you will waste downs though trying to get this kid to do some of the move things that pouncey can...

don't expect it to get to the perimeter of the field and lead a back etc or hit moving targets at the 2nd level very well...expect to see it on the ground...solid within 3 yards of the los provided he's in a straight line...

garner should be in the mix here but instead sounds like we are gonna go straight disaster and make him the backup left tackle...

speaking of IDGAF

I am not going to sugar coat things or post something that clearly identifies I have Al Bundy Syndrome which I don't. I am all WYSIWYG.... as much as you can be on the intrawebz.

its like we had a WR who ran a 4.7 and someone said "well so-and-so runs a 4.6" and you are saying he runs a 4.7 but he fights like a dog. good luck with that

there are alot of guys who fight like dogs and some of them are bagging groceries

I'm saying metrics are not the be all end all.

Maybe some of those dogs bagging groceries aren't cut out for the NFL so they sit and listen to rap while playing Madden... all the while erroneously believing they are like Dicrapio in Titanic.

With all of this talk about Tyler Larsen's "short arms", he should be given the nickname "Gator" too....lol

I agree. If Larson was playing tackle, I would be far more nervous with his short wingspan, but as an interior linemen, he can still be very effective as long as he has sufficient power, or a good technician...Larson was one of the stronger linemen at the combine.

At Center he will need to show he also has it upstairs, and the heart is as big as the men...we will find out soon enough, because I believe the coaches right now have no specific player in mind to take over, so everyone associated with the Center position will get a chance to prove themselves.

I hope Larsen wins the job. Lazor is very good at masking his guys weaknesses and playing to his guys strength. That is the quality in him that reminds me of Shula.

Larsen is incomplete, but has some very nice tools. In a pass pro setting in a phone booth he should be pretty good. Unless something changes dramatically, our OT'S will not be particularly good run blocking. Our OG's will have to carry us on traditional run plays.

Smith is good at it and I have faith in Turner, but they are the only decent run blocker's we have. So, I just don't expect Lazor to ask Larsen to be a downfield blocking C very often. Swing passes, screens, delayed hand offs ... I think Larsen will be OK.

So, I'm watching this replay of the Poinsettia Bowl between Utah State and NIU. I can't say I'm really impressed with Larsen, but it is hard to judge him in this offense: a lot of short passes and very little running.

Jimmie Ward on the other hand is clearly showing why he was drafted where he was...

So, you're saying that their offense operates kinda like Lazor's with the quick passes?

Because with this new offense one of Lazor's key points is that the ball comes out of Tannehill's hand quickly. While there are deeper drops as well as running plays, most plays in a WCO are short passes. So, while what Larsen did in that game might not seem very challenging, we probably wouldn't be asking him to climb Mt. Everest either.

I say let's give Larsen a shot. Find out if he can do it in the preseason and rotate him in with our other options. Then, pick the best OL from what we have.

Short arms and he plays with too much finesse and doesn't seem to have any explosiveness or aggressiveness. Camp fodder written all over him.
