Lesser Known Prospects

As of this writing, 12-19-2010, the Phins sit at 7-7 and the season is basically over. Time to starter another thread of the little known, undervalued, and sleepers in the upcoming draft. Feel free to chime in with a player that you feel deserves recognition. You may scoof at some of the names mentioned, but remember the NFL passed on Cam Wake the first time out. So without further ado:

1. Ricardo Lockette WR Bethel College 6'3" 199lbs.
I love his size, but what intrigues me about this player is his speed. He has been reported as running a 4.36/40. He is the D-II 200m Champ, running a 21.74 200m and a 48.26 400m also 60m indoor 6.8. He has huge soft hands. He has bounced around. He was recruited by a few SEC schools before settling on Fort Valley State. Everyone anticipated him to have a huge senior year at FVSU, but surprisingly chose to transfer to Bethel College. When asked why he transferred, "There have been a couple of rumors or whatever, but I don't pay attention to that," Lockette said Friday afternoon between classes. "I've taken drug tests. But not to my knowledge, I haven't heard anything. "That wasn't the reason for my transfer, because I'm still eligible to play, clearly." His transfer was, he said, simply a career decision. Bethel has a few other pro prospects, and Lockette said he'll be exposed to more NFL scouts. "I'm just taking steps forward to get to the next level. Scouts recommended the school. Talking with different people, different advisors, stuff like that, I just decided, ???Why not?" He gives us the speed this team has been lacking and more importantly, he can catch the ball.

Cecil Shorts - WR - Mt. Union

He doesn't get much recognition playing at a lower level, but he's been incredibly productive.. and has legitimate NFL speed. I've watched him a little in the subdivision playoffs and he flat out runs past those defensive secondaries... nice sleeper WR prospect in the mold of UTEP's Kris Adams...

He's also a former quarterback, which has helped him become an even more astute receiver. He's broken all of Pierre Garcon's receiving records..

Most importantly, he's been invited to the East/West Shrine Game and Senior Bowl... We'll get a look at how he competes matched up with legitimate NFL prospects.

He's the 2010 Draft's version of what Andre Roberts was last year coming out of The Citadel...

3. Derrick Locke RB Kentucky 5'8" 191lbs.
Locke is one of the more under appreciated backs in the SEC. It is probably because of his injury history. In 2009 he tore his ACL and he missed four games this season, but he didn't lose his speed. He still runs a 4.36/40 and he has been clocked at 4.29. At the start of the year, he and teammate Randall Cobbs were named the preseason All-SEC first team. While he would not be an every down back, he would be a good change of pace to the bigger backs we have now on the roster(if they are still here after the season). He would be an upgrade on PR/KR. His last game of the year against UT he had 208 all-purpose yards - 98yds. rushing, 1TD, 105 return yds.

4. Doug Martin RB Boise St. 5'9" 201lbs.
The newest in a line of tough-nosed running backs for BSU, Doug Martin ran for 1,113 yards and 11 TDs, averaging six yards per attempt.
Others called him "a beast" or "ridiculous."
"Freak" is the popular term these days - a reflection of Martin's status as arguably the team's most physically gifted player.
He is among the fastest, quickest and strongest Broncos - and he practices with the same demolition-derby style.

5. John Bender OG Nevada 6'8" 325lbs.
Switched positions from OT to OG. In 2009 he helped pave the way for one of the WAC's best rushing attacks that included 3 1,000 yard rushers. He was named to the 2010 All-WAC first team.
There aren't many players bigger or more powerful that Nevada's offensive anchor for the past three seasons. Big John Bender, at 6' 8'' and 325 pounds, is an absolute monster up front. He was drafted last spring by the Canadian Football League, the second offensive lineman taken. He is the best lineman in the WAC and he is a major reason why Kaepernick and Taua were able to become the most prolific QB - RB rushing combination in NCAA history. Yet Bender has been overlooked. Not invited to the Senior Bowl or the Combine, Bender is an unrecognized blue chip.

6. Mason Foster LB Washington 6'2" 242lbs.
Foster led the the PAC-10 in tkls. this year with 151. He ranked second nationally in both total tkls. and solo tkls. He started four games his freshman and has been a staple in the lineup for his last three years. He has accumulated 360 tkls., 199 solo tkls., 9 sacks, 6ffs, 4ints during his career at UW. He was 2008 UW Defensive MVP, 2008-2009 Honorable Mention All PAC-10, 2009 Sporting News All PAC-10 first team, 2010 All PAC-10, 2010 All-American(Scout.com).

7. Bilal Powell RB Louisville 6'1" 215lbs.
He does not really fit the criteria for this thread, but you wanted it:
Bilal Powell (born October 27, 1988) is an American football running back with the Louisville Cardinals football team. As a senior at Louisville, Powell was named to the All-Big East Conference first team[1] after rushing for 1,330 yards and 10 touchdowns in 11 games for the Cardinals. On October 15, Powell ran for a season high of 209 yards and 2 touchdowns against Cincinnati.[2] A top prospect for the 2011 NFL Draft, Powell has been invited to the 2011 Senior Bowl.[3]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilal_Powell
Bilal had 75yds. and a TD on 18 carries with 2recs. for 10yds. in the bowl game against USM.

8. Mike LeShoure RB Illinois 6'1" 230lbs.
Leshoure was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, Walter Camp Foundation National Player of the Week, Rivals.com National Player of the Week and College Football Performance Awards National Performer of the Week following his record-setting performance in Illinois' 48-27 win over Northwestern. Leshoure broke Illinois' single-game rushing record with 330 yards on 33 carries, an incredible average of 10.0 yards per carry, with two touchdowns. #5 also earned a "helmet sticker" from ESPN College Gamenight. This award goes to the top six individual performers from across the nation. Leshoure now has 1,371 yards this season, second to another #5, RashardMendenhall's 1,681 (2007 Rose Bowl year) in school history.

Here's a Scouting report from the Football Expert:
Scouting Report: Mikel Leshoure, RB, Illinois

by Clint Clearwater
NFL Draft Analyst
November 22, 2010
Ht: 6-0 Wt: 230 40: 4.53
Strengths:
I love his size. Plays with great power. Displays great agility and acceleration. Plays with a great burst for a back his size. Has good decision-making; when he sees the hole there is little hesitation and he shows off impressive explosiveness to get through the line. Surprisingly elusive for a bigger back. He is able to make quick cuts and start and stop immediately. Does not shy away from contact. Soft hands, can catch the football. Does a great job of pass blocking. Has good ball security. Reports of his improved his work ethic and maturity have really been evident this season. He is a playmaker.
Weaknesses:
He needs to be more consistent in keeping his feet moving when engaged. Vision is another thing that often stands out a little bit when I watch Mikel; it isn't his biggest weakness but this is something that I think could be improved. He does a good job of reading his blockers but he needs to look at the whole field when he is running. Sometimes it looks like he just reads the blockers right in front of him rather than see the whole field. He also often tries too hard for the home run play, rather than hit the hole for a 5 yard gain. Again, this is not the biggest concern for me, but he could improve in this area to become more consistent. He does not have elite speed for a running back (even though for his size it's great). He is a little inconsistent at running low; he needs to get lower when getting through the line.
Summary:
Mikel Leshoure is an exciting player to watch. He is big, powerful, strong, and yet surprisingly elusive, fast and explosive. Add in his natural instincts and you've got a special running back. Leshoure is living up to the hype this season; he went over 1000 yards, has 11 TDs and 14 receptions. He also did this behind an average offensive line and a young QB. Mikel Leshoure is quickly becoming one of my favorite players in the country and he has all the potential in the world. He has improved in key areas from last season and I believe that his best football is ahead of him. It will be exciting to see if he declares for the draft this year.

9. Ryan Bartholomew C Syracuse 6'2" 298lbs.
Bartholomew started his career with Syracuse at guard the first 2 yrs and then made the switch to the center position. He has directed a squad that posted back to back 1000yd. season for RB Delone Carter. Batholomew possess both expectional strength and speed. He has all the tools to succeed at the most critical position on the OL.

10. Jerrel Jernigan WR/RB/PR/KR Troy 5'9" 190lbs.
Jernigan is "Mister All-Purpose". His 7recs. in the New Orleans Bowl gave him 91recs. on the year, allowing him to break his own all-time receiving yards record in a season at Troy. He had a receiving and rushing TD in the Bowl game also. On top of his 6 receiving TDs this season, he also added 322yds. and 3 TDs on the ground. If that wasn't enough he threw for a TD and ran a kickoff and punt for a TD. He will probably get drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round, so if the FO wants him they will have to pull the trigger early.
