Vernon Carey Looking Good (ESPN)

Carey is a good player. The guy has the talent to be a top half of the league starting OT. SOmetimes a player just needs a kick in the a$$. SOmetimes the player does it himself or a coach does it.

Our guy, Mike Williams has also had an amazing offseason. Down 40+ LBS from the start of last year when he was 400+. Mike Williams is just a Big man, but his best playing weight is 350-360lbs not 400lbs+.

Everybody knows that Carey has talent, he showed it at UM. The only problem is that big Vern is as dumb as a rock. His technique has probably improved so far, but lets wait and see if he can learn the offense and apply what Houck has taught him on the field.

Houck is making an impact already. Carey is improving daily. The rest of the guys are in position to turn it all around this year. This is the key to our offense no matter how you slice it. The OL must impove, and it appears it's on it way!!!!

PHINZ RULE!!!

Last thing you want is a dumb Offensive Lineman. IMO, Besides QB's, they are and should be the smartest players on the team.

if he looks good that is one thing,

don't jinx it... we evaluate during game time...

Nate Netwon....

Lets not get ahead of ourselves. Carey has yet to prove his worth on the field. Yeah its great to hear he's progressed in practice but they havent even put the pads on yet.

Actually he played against the Pats....He did a very good job at RT. I thought he looked a little better than St Claire actually. It wasn't a spectacular job, but he held his own against some very good ends and OLBs. Carey will be fine, he was a rookie, had to get his feet wet.

Especially playing the LT position.... thats why I bolded and quoted the other post. That is a slight concern I do have about Vernon. Everything I have read or seen about his intelligence has not been positive.

I don't care if he's dumb as a post as long as he's strong enough and athletic enough to get in front of pass rushers.

But with that sense, he also needs to be smart enough to recognize defenses and know where the pass rush is coming from. When we play teams like NE that mix up their defenses, you need to be smart enough to recognize where the rush is coming from.

You can be the most athletic person in the world, but if your a moron and cant pick up blitz schemes your gonna get toasted. The NFL is such a fast paced game, you have a split second to react before someone runs right around you. If your not smart enough to make the correct read in the time frame given to you, then it doesnt matter how athletic you are because you just missed the pass rush.

That's the job of the line captain to keep the morons up to date on what's happening. And trust me if you have no talent, you ain't playing in the NFL long even if you are a frickin genius.

I completely agree with that statement, I wasnt trying to argue that point.

However a smart center can not do everything. He can make the line calls but like I said before, the NFL is such a fast paced game whereas you have a split second to make the right move.... athletic or not, if you are dumb as a doorknob you are going to get blown past.

Think were overstating the dumbness somewhat. It's not like he scored an 8 or 12 on the wonderlic. It's just been said he's slow to pick up offenses and that remark came out of the last coaching staff and those guys were slow to pick up their jobs period.
