(On Kevin Vickerson and Manuel Wright and how they’ve persevered through tough times) – “They both had what I was talking about earlier. I call it the brook trout look, too. Do you know what that is? Have you ever caught a fish and you look at him and they just look like they have nothing. Their eyes are just kind of blank. I saw that look out there today. You can call it the look, the brook trout look or whatever, but basically what it means is that you don’t have the eye of the tiger, you’re not ready to do what you have to do and something is beating you up out here and you can’t let that happen.â€Â

I thought that was pretty funny.

Also Jason Taylor, Chris Chambers, AJ Feeley, and Gus Frerotte had press conferences today.

He also said:

On sharing names of guys who don’t have the eye of the tiger) – “I think that is family business and internal to the team. If I wasn’t asked specifically about [Vickerson and Wright] I wouldn’t have said anything about them or if they weren’t young guys that we are trying to light a fire any way that we can. So if you can help by putting that in the paper, it will help ou. â€Â

:)

(On if there are concerns about the quarterbacks getting the ball to the receivers) – “They get it to them everyday. I have a concern about everything. I have a concern that we’ll jump offside. I have a concern, will we pass protect well enough? Will we play good enough in the red area? Will we score touchdowns? I don’t have any concerns about our quarterbacks. They are what they are. We are going to coach them to do what they can do in the game and we should be productive in what we do if we execute together as a team. They’re both capable of doing it.â€Â

Both....as in Gus and AJ....not Sage...not Berlin.....GUS and AJ are BOTH capable of doing it.

So much for Feeley being 4th on the depth chart....

Right. Good stuff pointing that out.

I LOVE how Saban goes off on some bizarre tangent that has nothing to do with football...yet he somehow makes it work.

i caught that, too. but couldn't that mean that both berlin and gus are capable, and that feeley getting practice reps is just to appease the huggers? ;)

Not a good sign though. When two picks, albeit low picks are being called out as looking like they have nothing. Perhaps Shaw is ahead of them.

Oh yes....Saban is notorious for running his football team based on what the fans want. Him are stoopid like that.

I say bring back Wanny if that's the case...at least was smart enough to stick with his guy no matter what the fans thought.

took two days to find some relief eh. When we need your boy he will be ready, Gus won't last the whole season.

If you are speaking generally, then generally when a player is picked after the 3rd and sometimes even 4th round there is a big reason why that player is picked that low. Especially when that player is in a prime position such as defensive tackle. The reason may be they do not have all the physical tools however mentally they are sound and have a good motor. It could be that the person has great talent, however he is lazy or not all there mentally or raw in technique.

It is very rare to pick a defensive tackle that are as physcially talented as Vickerson and Wright AND have those tackles also have the high motor and mental toughness. If they had the high motor and the mental toughness and technique they would be picked in the first 3 rounds.

So it is not a sign good or bad, it is something that should be expected by two very young, raw talented players at this point

Conversely, you look at Hawthorne in Oakland who was picked late and he is having a great camp. The reason I am dissapointed in Vickerson is because I knew going into his last season of collge that he mentally wasn't there. However, his production really picked up his final year which led me to believe that he had finally "gotten it." I knew he had the talent, but the mental game wasn't there yet. Perhaps, he will catch on later, but I really thought he had a chance to make an impact as a rookie an dnow it doesn't seem so...

Hawthorne is a 6th round pick who was a 1st round pick who became a 6th round pick because of drugs. Totally different situation.

Did anyone ever stop to think that maybe not everything that Saban says is a riddle that's just waiting to be picked apart and unraveled by the media and fans?

I really don't care who starts for us, so long as they do the job. What I don't want is to see flip flopping back and forth and people moving all over the place on the depth chart in the middle of the season.

Not really. If a guy is getting popped for drugs, it shows that his head isn't on straight and thinks of himself before his team and whatnot. However, I believe that Hawthorne turned it around. I am just saying it would be nice to hear Vickerson od that because the guy has serious skills but really hasn't tapped them yet.
