Details of the contract:

• Wake's salary cap numbers from 2012 to 2016 will be (in millions): $2.2, $5.0, $7.3, $9.7, $9.8. The Dolphins now have about $5.5 million in cap space this year, giving Ireland enough room to sign the rookie class (about $2 million) and give another contract extension if he so chooses (Jake Long is at the top of his list).
• His salary ($615,000) and bonuses ($50,000) stay the same for 2012.
• His contract is heavily back-loaded - almost $16.5 of the $26.5 million in base salaries come in the final two years.
• Between 2014-2016, Wake can earn an extra $5 million per season if he reaches a certain number of sacks in a year. That number is not known.
• If the Dolphins pay Wake the $3 million option in 2015, and he makes the team in September, he will get an additional $5.2 million in salary that year. His salary for 2016 would then be $8.275 million.

So it seems like for Wake, the more he preforms (especially later in his contract) the more he can earn? I think I like this contract..

Sounds like it's really a 2-3 year contract.

good for both side's................

Wow. That contract is insanely favored towards Miami. Ireland, you are killing it.

Love Wake, but there is sure to be a dropoff in production in the later years. Good contract for Miami and good that Wake got his guaranteed money.

I disagree. Nobody in the NFL takes better care of himself than Cam. Everything from abstinence, to diet, to workaholic. If there is a pass rusher in the NFL who will endure past age 35 it is Wake; barring injuries of course.

Not only that I think last season was an off year for him, partially because he was constatly being held with no flags, and also because he was the only thing close to a pass rushing threat on the whole DL. The interior guys didn't bring much last year either to help him, and Misi isn't a pass rusher by any stretch of the imagination.

If he is teamed with another solid pass rusher and an elite situational guy, he has the potential to record double digit sacks for another 7 years.

Wow, this contract really surprises me. Much better for Miami than I thought.
I guess Ireland knows what he's doing...

I know this is common, but just gonna say, its so interesting from a political standpoint acceptable "bounties" vs. those behind-closed-doors a la NOLA...

This. Not only does it protect Miami in the event Wake's production drops, but it will also make it hard for Wake to hold out.

Its one thing to hold out for a contract when your in the last year of your original one and making pennies. Its harder to hold out when a fat check it just "one more season away" and you need to be as prepared as you can be for the upcoming season(to prevent being cut after the season).

Sobriety is abstaining from boozing.

Intelligence is abstaining from some posts...sheesh!!!

this contract works out well, and gives us no cap problems this season or next really. I think the FO is being very smart this offseason. signing guys they are SURE are going to be around, esp on the defensive side, and waiting to see how the offensive FA's wind up producing this season before extending them.
