Walker: Hickey received offers to trade down at 19 but wanted to stay to pick James

Dion Jordan. Mike Wallace. Two dares last season. How'd they work out?

Actually those were Ireland losing his damn mind. One was panic/overpaying for speed and the other was a major reach for an injured player when we had other needs.

It doesn't matter if he would have been there at 27 or not, there would have been a lineman of comparable skills at 27. It's not like this guy was some sort of all-pro can't miss prospect.

Not all of the players in the draft will reach the potential that the "experts" have place on them. If James is a pro-bowl RT in 3 years while Moses, CK, and Bitonio are all busts, is it still a bad pick? Point is that nobody knows and anybody claiming they do know is full of crap or retarded because they could be making millions running a team.

This highlights what I think. At the 19th pick, you don't take the 25th best player, but the 19th or a higher one that has fallen. Same for 27; you don't take the 35th ranked just because you "need" and o-lineman, you take the 27th ranked.

Sounds great until you look at the opening day roster and realize you have 4 starting centers and zero starting RTs. They are building a football team with 22 DIFFERENT spots to fill.

All I can say is really a right tackle? Did he play left tackle in college even? You don't draft a right tackle in first round. At least get a left tackle or is that not make sense. Right tackles are nothing more than athletic guards. Dime a dozen not a playmaker. Our offense is boring. Sorry but my enthusiasm for this team is at an all time low after 40 years. Clueless for 30 yrs and counting it seems. Seems like a replay of Parcell's 2.0. I hope he is not a second coming of the other Tennessee lineman from last who has sucked and not seen the field.

Jesus Christ. Did you not watch the team last season?

WTF???? I thought needs don't enter into it???? Can the whiners at least keep their stories straight?

You have four centers; convert some of them to guard and go with it, or trade some of them. If they were good enough that you deemed they were the BPA they can play guard. If they would have addressed "needs" in FA, then they wouldn't have to worry about filling them in the draft.

This is completely untrue. It might have been true once, but doesn't hold any water anymore.

The split of top DE snaps on the strong and weak sides is evening out to the point it's almost 50:50. Pressure and sack numbers are tending towards 50:50 now also. The idea that you can get away with parking your future left tackle or a scrub you picked off the street at RT is dead. Arguably, RTs have more on their plates than LTs these days because the majority of run plays are designed to the strong side.

You're right in the sense that the draft and FA haven't fully caught up with that, so LTs are still more highly valued in the draft and earn higher deals. But the gap is narrowing. It hasn't narrowed enough to be able to say Jame wasn't a reach, that's for sure. But James in the 2nd or early 3rd would have arguably been good value.

He's far more likely to do well for not having played LT in college. Though a lot of people, myself included, think he could be a future LT, when he's done anchoring our right side.

I'm not very impressed with the reach aspectof the pick, but you don't find plug-and-play starting RTs in the 6th round often. You find guys that ULTIMATELY end up starting at RT in the 6th, but it might take 2 or 3 years of development to get there, time we didn't have for an increasingly important position with no depth on the roster.

I've been arguing this point about RTs and LTs for what seems like years. LTs used to carry elite grades and RTs you could find late in the draft. Nowadays the value of the position is much closer to even... and the result should be that the value of the picks you spend on them should be met in the middle.

You can't afford to have one great linemen and a bunch of scrubs anymore. The offenses are too open. The interior and right side pressure is too good. All of your offensive linemen have to be good. But since you have limited resources, the sharp thinking is to try apply good resources to the position, not elite resources. Mid round picks and good money. Not the #19 pick.

I think its become quite clear that we coveted James over Moses/Koundjio. Thats why we took him.

It makes no sense to me that media type past GM's think we reached for him and in the same sentence mention Koundjio's health.

Hickey just drafted the guy we needed most and would make it happen day one.

This is nothing more than the Pouncey pick to me. I dont see many people saying that pick sucked.

This team is in trouble until Ross sells the team, he has made bad hires. Ireland was bad, Hickey is no better and they still kept a coach he is in way over his head.

I actually wanted James in the 2nd, I thought he would not be there though I thought he would go in the mid to upper 20's. So this might a little reach for Fins, but a Solid Player. I just think he is more of a Fit on the Left Side than right, and with Albert in the fold this made me scratch my head a bit.

He is a 4 year starter at RT. He will (hopefully) start at RT from day one. He is an option at LT in the future if needed.

Yeah I know he is a pure RT and that is why I wanted him in Buffalo. But unless he gets stronger at the point of attack I see him making his career in the NFL on the left side. That is why I am saying right now he projects better as a LT in the NFL, because he is not your typical RT, more finese and lacks power at point of attack.

After thinking about it I am warming up to the pick...I am fine with James and where we took him.
Maybe Hickey knows this guy is a solid to good 10 year starter at RT. In that case kudos to him for getting his guy and greatly improving the oline. James is durable, started 4 years, and a high character guy. That Is a huge change from the injured, projects Fireland reached for..
It is easy to say well we should have gotten him at 27 and added a 3rd. The team behind us traded their pick etc. WHo knows what would have happen. Hickey got his guy and we got better..

Plus there is this:
@Eda_Bagadicz I am hearing from multiple sources; three teams inquired about Arizona's pick to draft James, should #Dolphins move back @blomarkelly
