Walter Football 2014 - Miami Dolphins Rookie Preview

Alot of comments on that.

My take on it sort of like school grade scale.

1st Round grade is worth like 40% of overall....2nd Round grade 20%, 3rd Round 10%, 4th Round 5%....etc....

Using a common grading scale (A= 93-100; A- = 90-92; B+ = 87-89; B =83-86; B- = 80-82, etc.) I calculated the grades to an average of 85, which is a " B " for the rest of the world. However, what we don't see is the mandatory 10 point penalty for it being about dolphins, so the average drops to a 75, a " C ". You see? Walter Football isn't stupid after all, they are just DICKS! ;-)

They said Turner is really a blocker but then say he was drafted because Tanny needs an intermediate target.

It's not just Walter Football, but a lot of sites just guess like we do and have no idea why a player was drafted or how exactly he'll be used by coaches.

And as far as I'm concerned, anyone in the later rounds are just picked because some scout liked him, and the team needs to pick a player, and that's the player. There's no guarantee a lot of guys will even make a team.

Proof please.

Provide evidence for those claims if you dont mind.

Don't mind at all sir, but what kind of evidence are you looking for? If you're looking for stats and lines of different "important" metrics I'm not your guy. As far as the hamstring, it's fairly common knowledge that he injured it at the combine. I know there some that were skeptical of the injury, B.S. in my opinion, but let's put that aside and talk about the player on the field in games. I'll even concede that he runs a 4.7 forty 100 percent healthy. (so does Keenan Allen BTW) Here are my observations of Landry from actually watching a lot of his games. He has a good catch radius and his hands and body control are top of the food chain. The kid has bear traps for hands and you will not find anyone that competes harder for the ball in the air. More importantly he understands leverage and how to run routes. It may take him a few weeks to translate this to the nuances and speed of NFL defenses but it will happen fairly quickly. You either know how to get open or you don't. This is also what typically creates YAC, not just speed. Guys that know how to separate give themselves the an opportunity to make plays by being in space when the ball arrives, especially out of the slot. Every year there are a handful of shiny new sports cars that run a 4.4 at the combine that keep their OCs up at night trying to figure out a way to get them the ball in space, but it never happens and they're soon out of the league or barely making rosters all over the league. Guys like Landry make an impact for years. His jersey will be all over Sunlife stadium on game days over the next few years. Oh, and by the way, he can, will and seems to enjoy blocking.

All good stuff, and I'm expecting a lot out of Landry.

You just can't underestimate in this league the value of football smarts, drive, and a physical attribute or two that help you out, like big hands.

No such thing as overpaying for gas when the gas light has been on for 20 miles.

landry was a top 50 bpa any day...top 5 wr on my board

i'm not aware of miami missing on another wr after trading down they wanted more but i'm glad we got the right one...scheme fit and option route wise they don't get any more ideal for us

the tape is really good

Im looking for evidence that shows he was a first round talent that fell because he was injured. Please link it at any time, and if you dont mind: emphasize the injury. Thanks.

I can see a scenario where Miami was targeting Jordan Mathews at 50. Either way, I'm happy with Landry. Generally speaking, I wouldn't touch a player who tested the way Landry did. Most don't make it. But there should be room for exceptions, and Landry's toughness, instincts, and football IQ make him one of my exceptions. If he performed at the combine as I expected him to, I had him as a player going in the 20s.

i was not a jordan matthews fan and would not have liked that pick although i can see where his skill set fits in philly...i see a much more finished product and ceiling reached player there

I'm quite sure you have access to a computer that is equipped with google. Simply type "jarvis landry hamstring" into the search bar and hit enter. I'm not going to debate whether or not it's the only reason he ran slow at the combine, he's the only one who actually knows. I do know that he ran 2 tenths faster at his pro day (coincidence??) but the damage to his draft stock was already done. Todd McShay stated the only reason he didn't have a 1st round grade on him was because of his speed.

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-orleans-saints/tag/_/name/jarvis-landry

“Jarvis Landry, I'd have a first-round grade on him if he could run. His times are so poor. But he's a great slot receiver, tough-guy football player,” McShay said.

For the record, I could give a **** what McShay thinks but I can only assume that many other "experts" felt the same way, that his game tape doesn't line up with his measurables in shorts and a t-shirt and they're not about to put a 1st round grade on a wr that ran a 4.77 at the combine, bad hammy or not.

there's no doubt the timed run at the combine hurt landry...hell at his pro day he ran low 4.6's...at the combine he pulled up pretty much after he crossed the line so i dont really buy the hammy stuff effected that timed run all that much but the bottom line is the guy plays as fast as he times and working on the inside against stiffer hipped more quick acceleration than long speed guys he will work people over with his precise route running footwork ability to read coverage and leverage ideal ball skills and awareness pluck the ball out of the air hands and toughness...he gets off the los damn well and locates the football like a natural

the thing you won't see is a whole lot of separation over longer distances but if the timings right there will be plenty of windows to fit the ball in cause he wins quickly...i saw so many missed vertical even opportunities in 2013 with landry when mettenberger got hurt and the other kid played in the bowl game cause the qbs timing sucked...one thing about tannehill is that you can't really knock his timing the ball comes out timely...

his first year starter tape in 2012 at lsu is as natural as it gets when it comes to a wr...i mean the polish he shows even then you just don't find it very often...this kid was meant to play football...a pure football player...

my favorite 2nd round pick this teams made since i started really paying attention to prospects...easily...ready to contribute from day 1...just a matter of how long before he gets his opprtunity...i'm betting he's in some sets from week 1

no stupid ass red shirt season here and need for bs excuses about high picks not being ready to contribute here...i never bought that crap anyways...you draft the right people they can help you from the get go...

I believe he ran a 4.58 at the pro day so I think the hamstring had to have some effect at the combine, but I digress. I'm no longer concerned with how he arrived at 63 I'm just glad he was there. I agree with the rest of your post 100%. He's never been a burner but his other attributes as a football player are off the charts. He will become Tannehill's new best friend.

Like they say, difference between quick and fast.

Wallace is fast.

Laundry is quick.

Fast will kill you deep.

Quick will kill you in the slot.

I think Landry will contribute quite a bit in the short term, if he starts I think he has a good opportunity to outperform every offensive player taken in this draft. But I also think when it comes time to extend or resign him there'll be a fierce debate as to his worth. Basically is he's smart enough to start I think he'll come out of the gates as a Davone Bess, but what is his upside? So it was likely a good second round pick and exactly the type of pick we should have made two years ago to help Tannehill out a little. This whole draft was the type of draft we needed last year.
