The ending of the game was brutal for Wannstedt and Pitt. They attempted a FG with 7 seconds left, maybe 48 yards. The holder wasn't even looking as the center snapped the ball prematurely. It caroomed off the holder's helmet. Remarkably, it went smack to the kicker who had the smarts to throw an incomplete pass with one second left. Nebraska complained it should have been intentional grounding, which was probably true but the refs didn't call it.
It wasn't 4th down on the initial attempt. On the second chance Nebraska overloaded the left side of Pitt's formation and the inside rusher blocked the kick. Pitt was 2 for 5 on FG attempts in a one point loss.
