Was Philbin over McCoy the right move?

With the early success that McCoy is having in San Deigo, we have to look back and wonder if hiring Philbin over him was the right move. I like Philbin, but it seems as though this team is regressing under him. When you can't beat a Bills team with a 4th string QB that you beat easily the year before at home, you have to start asking questions. A good part of the blame belongs Sherman on offense, but whether it be after a bye, or right out of the half, there are too many times where this team comes out flat and in the last two games, it has cost us big time. I just don't see this team moving forward in the right direction right now. McCoy on the other hand has helped Rivers look like an elite QB again, and if we had landed him, its more likely would have ended up with Wilson instead of Tannehill. Thoughts?

McCoy is 4-3 this year. Philbin is 3-3. Why act like McCoy is on fire?

McCoy is also a rookie head-coach. Philbin should be taking the next step as a coach at this point, and as of right now, it does not seem that he is as this this team is regressing. If you look at the Chargers on offense, they are playing much better than in years past. Rivers looks elite again. Not many people had the Chargers winning more than 5-6 games this year and as of right now, they'd be in the playoffs. Yes, they lost to the Raiders, but they also beat two first place teams.

So then why compare McCoy to Philbin if you're handicapping his being a rookie coach? He's a game better than Miami now because they've played one more game. There is no comparison after Week 7.

I'm comparing Philbin to McCoy because those were our two choices in 2012 after Fisher. We almost went with McCoy, so it will be interesting to follow his career. Record isn't the only thing that I'm looking at though, but actual coaching. McCoy is doing more so far in his first season, than Philbin is in his second. The Chargers are improving, even if they only go 8-8. McCoy's team doesn't look horrible flat coming out of halves or at the begging of games, and that's coaching.

LOL. I wish someone bump them threads from a few years ago. I got burned bad.

For the record:
I wanted Billick
Though Fisher would be great, but knew he never come here
Love the idea of McCoy and defend it.

I was then classified as a Joe hater thereafter. I was not, but criticized him constructively and praised as such. The constructive criticism now is the team is not getting better and progressing. That is on him.

I guess we will have our chance to see Joe match up with the McCoy in November.

I'm not sold on McCoy yet either. Ross made the big mistake by not cleaning house and getting rid of Ireland.

That is the ultimate answer. Ross should have cleaned out all the crap when he got rid of Sparano. Thinking Ireland was any different was a mistake.

I wanted McCoy over Philbin to start with and i said it on here " look it up " So no, it wasn't the right move... just like over drafting #17 wasn't. McCoy makes his game plans around his players and doesn't try to make them fit his system. That's what makes one a winning head coach and the other a loser.

For the record, at the time I wanted McCoy over Philbin. In fact I hated the Philbin choice, but to be fair he's been a pleasant surprise to me. Granted I had incredibly low expectations. It's hard to gauge any choice we made considering we kept Ireland and those sorts of half measures are really longshots. In a vacuum I like a lot of the moves we've made, but success comes from the ability to put together a complete team without crippling flaws and some elite qualities. Not just a few highlights here and there. Philbin always struck me as a grinder who's done his time in the league, but never really distinguished himself. He's done a good job of keeping us disciplined and avoiding a lot of conditioning and character debacles that have plagued us in the past, but is that enough to make him a quality HC in this league?

Joe Philbin does not know what he's doing. The Dion Jordan thing is eating me up alive. How come you don't want to start the beast I don't understand that

My first choice was Brian Billick and I did not like the Philbin hire but everyone was just praising him this offseason and now in week 7 he has nothing but criticsm we have no consisitency has fans.

We'll face the Chargers soon enough. Should be a fun game.
