we had to of broke a record

we had to broke a record in drafting the most non fbs players in a draft. I get we need high character players but only 3 fbs players? this draft still has me shaking my head. did they send scouts to any other conferences than the sec, and then just small school programs? we hopefully fixed the oline but lets not pretend there were not prospects on the board when we picked that could have helped us at other glairing needs

We at least tied it. Former Jaguars GM Gene Smith had a very similar draft in 2010. He reached in the first round at pick #10 for Tyson Alualu & then went on a small school run with his next five picks. Four of them were FCS players, none of which worked out. Then he followed that draft up in 2011 by reaching again with the #10 pick for Blaine Gabbert & finished out that draft with four small school players of which only Cecil Shorts has worked out. Not a good GM or formula to emulate.

Jacksonville has always put together a steady defense and they have had options at the skill positions . . . they have not been able to figure out the QB position, and that is what has hurt them the most. We have a QB, and honestly, outside of 2 holes on the oline, we have for the most part our starters as well. What we needed was depth and this is the type of draft that will help with that. Leaders, team captains, hard workers, go getters that are going to bring it everyday to make this 53 man roster and help this team reach new levels, even if its from a secondary role.

I simply dont care where these guys played their college ball. My only care is that they are capable of playing on the NFL level. There are plenty of good NFL players who played college ball at non FBS schools. FBS is overrated anyway IMHO.

James went to Tennessee, Landry to LSU, Lynch went to Georgia. This is not exclusively a small college draft.
Frankly it doesn't matter where they came from, if the talent is there. Ireland appears to have been more impressed by the bigger name college pedigree.
My hunch is that players like Billy Turner, Walt Aitken and Jordie Tripp all got drafted later than they would have if they had gone to a big name college. In a way, that is how Hickey is trying to extract value.

There was definitely a "smartest guy in the room" approach to this draft. Just hopeful it works out for the best. Hickey will be judged off this draft accordingly.
