we need a vet kicker

I can not believe this thread. The one kick I would criticize him for missing is the short field goal Thursday night against the Bengals and maybe the one against Buffalo, but that one was over 50 yards. He is "credited" with missing two field goals against New England, but one of them was blocked because the whole right side of the line caved in so that was clearly not his fault. The second one he missed that day hit the upright from I believe it was 48 yards. It was a tough wind that day and he just didn't play it right. He also made a 50 plus yard field goal that day in a tough wind. The first field goal he missed all season was a 57 yard game winning attempt against Baltimore. People act like that was a gimme. So to sum it up, I think one kick he flat out blew (Bengals), one he probably should have made (Buffalo) and three that were either not his fault or just really tough kicks. I really like the kid and I think that he has ice water in his veins. I think it would be nuts to give up on him now. People forget how unreliable Dan Carpenter had become, not to mention how expensive he was. If this team was a Super Bowl contender maybe I would consider looking at other kickers, but I doubt it. Besides, who is out there right now that you would rather have? This team has way bigger issues than who the kicker is. Let the season play out so we can see if he can handle pressure kicks before we throw him to the curb.

Agree. He made some tough ones in tough situations. Need to to look at each situation to get an accurate assessment.

How soon we all forget!!!!! Carpenter did what most exfins do leave and do better with another team. A rookie kicker is still a rookie. Why would we want someone eleses cast off vet in the middle of the season?

He came through in Cinci but I'll be holding my breath every time we need a clutch field goal!

Thread about how we need a vet kicker...starts out with "I WAS on the Sturgis bandwagon"...we're what? 8 games into the season? such a joke...let the kid kick, get his confidence back, and get comfortable with the team. He has a 60 yard leg...we have a lot of problems on this team and KICKER isn't one of them...sheesh

I loved a couple of weeks ago when he got iced on a 48 or so harder, then had to rekick and splits the uprights again. I think he will be alright. Not saying he won't affect the season or hasn't already, but he seems like a good kicker.

Keep Sturgis. He's a rookie and is learning the toughness needed also.

Don't need to worry about Sturgis.

We are a young team with a lot of talent. They just need the playing experience to be a really good team - this year will provide that.

I still hope for the playoffs. But with our youth we may just miss them. Next year is the true test. If we still struggle next year (like this year), then I would look at the coaching staff - at least some of the coaches (Sherman already is on shaky ground).

He was 1 in 6 tries before hitting the tying field goal on Thursday. I'd cut him, but to be more fair team can give him another shot. If he hits another snag that resembles that he should be cut on the spot.

How did he come through in Cinci? If he would have made the field goal earlier in the game, we wouldn't need him to kick a game tying field goal at the end of the game.

So his game-tying 44 yarder isn't "coming through" because he missed one earlier? You sir, are a joke.

No, the joke here is that you praise a kicker that is mediocre at best currently. Do I like Sturgis? Yes. Carpenter lost us multiple games last year. Will Sturgis do the same? I don't think so. He lost some confidence, but he's bounced back and I think making that game tying field goal was great for him. But he's getting paid lots of money to make field goals. Had he made the field goal earlier in the game, we wouldn't have had to go to OT. We all know that you and many others would be putting the loss on Sturgis if the Bengals wound up winning because of the missed field goal.

Good to know what you'd do in a job you'll never have
