We need to extend Ireland before it's too late!

Dumbest. Thread. Ever.

The Dolphins may have more "depth", but having better second and third stringers isn't much to hang your hat on. The Dolphins still don't have a single super star on their Offense, despite Ireland being the head guy for several years. I can't think of one offensive player who has a good chance of being a Pro-Bowler this year. Maybe Pouncey, but that's a little bit of a stretch, given that this offense is unlikely to rank in the top 1/3 of the league this year.

Like Bill Parcells used to say "You are what your record says you are". Under Jeff Ireland, the Dolphins have been a bad franchise for years. I wouldn't lose any sleep if he left. I suspect there would be a ton of interest in being the new Dolphin GM. Philbin, Aponte, and Ross are respected around the league.

If we don't make the playoffs this year then Ireland is gone. It's as simple as that.

Nope. Didn't you hear Ross lately. The team just needs to "improve." We do 8-8 he stays...hell, I doubt he gets fired with 7-9 again. Ross is a tool and has know clue about football, or Ireland would have been gone when we got rid of Sparano.

Ireland is like a bad penny that just keeps showing up.

2 out of 4 in the boston area and pretty negative about everything the dolphins do. i smell something here

why would i not admit to being a patriot fan if i was. they win superbowls and compete every year. your logic is very flawed lol

I have watched all thirty pages of this thread and it has convinced me of two things. The first is the Miami Dolphins under Ross have the only front office in the league where there is a total disconnect between accountability for prior results and executive payroll and retention decisions. There is no other explanation for a general manager who has completed four consecutive losing seasons still having a job. Second, the fans of this message board are for the most part hopelessly committed to mediocrity. It is all that they know and all that they understand. There is no other possible explanation for the irrational exuberance that is being displayed after a preseason victory over the worse team in the league. For those of you who want to extend Jeff Ireland, how many more 7-9 or 6-10 seasons are you willing to sit through before you will entertain the notion that he should be held accountable for his miserable lack of results? 1? 2? 5? 10? 20? Enquiring minds who remember when the Dolphins were held to higher expectations than the Detroit Lions would like to know.

Inquiring minds want to know...

Might be the dumbest thread I've ever seen. Giving him an extension now would make us the laughingstock of the league....an extension after 4 straight losing seasons, lmao how ridiculous.

"Enquiring minds want to know" was the slogan of the National Enquirer, a gossip newspaper sold primarily in the checkout line at supermarkets. Some of our younger members of the board may be unaware of the cultural reference and the deliberate misspelling that it contains.

I'm all for giving a 2 or 3 year extension if we have a successful regular season (not offseason or preseason), but now is not the time for an extension. Also, giving out 5 year contracts with coaches or front office has never been a good idea imo, shorter contracts like 2 or 3 years would be better, or even 4 years if you must.

Ireland knows or at least thinks that the majority of Dolphin fans dislike him so he may not want to return. Then again, I doubt there will be a bunch of teams falling all over each other to get him as their GM. He may have to go back to being a grunt scout

i quite agree. Ireland has done an admirable job lately. found a franchise QB, brought in sme big names. we really have a talented roster up and down the depth chart now. can't risk losing the archtitect of that. btw while we're at it, extend Aponte, too. we're in great shape cap wise.

Ryan Tannehill is a good looking prospect who has talent, a really good work ethic, and a good head on his shoulders. He is not a franchise QB at this point in time and you know that.

I don't think sneaking into the playoffs with a wildcard at 8-8 or 9-7 and losing the first game is going to be considered a success either. Didn't some team get into a wildcard with a 7-9 record? Wouldn't that be unreal if we did the same thing?!

Exactly. But people don't want to hear that.

Tannehill (right now) is NOT capable of putting the team on his shoulders like a true franchise QB can do. Ryan needs to take a big step forward to try to get to that point. If he is not able to then it was pretty much a wasted 1st round pick. It makes me ill to even say or think it. I hope he can be THE QB we have needed since Marino.
