Welker- Yes or No?

Wes Welker is one of my favorite players of all time simply because he ran back those kicks. I hope he stays in a Fin uniform for many, many years.

This off season there has been much speculation about whether wes will remain as the pr/kr guy. The most used reason is that "he lacks top end speed". Now i personally love the guy, but are we being skewed by the fact that he broke that 12 something year no st TD curse, or is he a legit threat?

If you look at the season stats he did very well:
Punt Return: 43 returns/12 Fair catches/464 yards/10.8 avg/long 71 yards
/0 TD/ 20+yards-7

Kick Return: 61 returns/1415 yards/23.2 avg/long 95 yards/ 1 TD/ long 71 yards/ 1 40+

For the fins these numbers are rather good. But how does he match up to the elite of the league. Terence Mcgee, and Dante hall.
Dante Hall:
Punt return:23 returns/232 yards/10.1 avg/long 46/0 td/4 20+
kick returns:68 returns/1718 yards/25.3 avg/long 97/2 TD/6 40+ yards

Terence McGee
Kick Return:52 returns/1370 yards/26.3 avg/long 104/ 3 TD/ 5 40+

So does he keep the job? Does he match-up against the better return men in the league. Is his ability to run full speed through traffic, and his agility enough to get us good field position?
I absoFRIKKINlutely think Wes should be our return man! I would keep him around simply based on (if nothing else) the fact that he's so versatile. He can play several different positions, WELL. As a return man, he knows how to hit the holes, hold onto the ball, and be a legitimate threat to take it to the house. What he lacks in speed, he makes up in other areas. I think the man has earned his spot on this team.

Plus....if you give Welker the same # of kickoff returns (68) as opposed to (61) and add up his average (23.5) for each kickoff return...he would only be about 141 yards shy of Dante Hall's kickoff yards

Wes was awesome for us last year, a 4-12 team's MVP (In my opinion). He's become one of our favorites & my wife LUVS him!

Anyway, I believe Saban brought in Shirdonya Mitchell to eventually supplant Wes in the KR/PR role, as he really does lack top end speed.

So I really hope these flashes Wes is showing at WR in camp continue into the regular season to further solidify his role with this team.

Oh gross....he has the Cowboys listed as his "favorite" team growing up.....:shakeno:

Welker plays faster than he really is. He has great vision on returns and is smart enough to make the right choices. The guy is also very good at making the first guy miss (the tackle). He's also pretty darned tough. Looking at him in person (as close as you can get at training camp), you have to ask yourself how he even made it into the league in the first place. The guy isn't huge (as a matter of fact, he looks tiny next to everyone on the team except the towel boy) and he really isn't a "burner". Much like Zach Thomas, Texas Tech simply provided the NFL (and more importantly, the Phins) with another NATURAL. Welker is, as someone else stated, the X factor. Yeah, he is a fan favorite......but he's also one hell of an athlete that plays with more heart than many men 3 times his size. Wes will be here (barring an injury or some travesty during cuts). In fact, I expect Welker to build on his rookie season and break a couple of more for scores.

Is it just me or does Wes Welker remind anyone else of Steve Tasker? Yeah, I know, Tasker was a Bill but he was still great on Special Teams. I hated facing that guy.

I'm sure that comes from being from Texas. I bet Zach's favorite team was either the Cowboys or Oilers when he was growing up. ;)
