Wes Welker is NOT Happy!!

Insurance fraud is a real thing and anyone involved in insurance encounters some type of fraud on a daily occurrence. It's not a business where you can just take someone's word for it.
Its also a business designed to make money.
My daughter required a surgery. They refused to pay most of the bill. They didnt pay anything after I exceeded out of network max. I provided receipts and documentation.
I paid over 87k out of pocket.
Im sorry, but it happens all to often. They screw people in their time of need.

Regular health insurance is a completely different animal than the rest of insurance. Pretty much everything involved with health care is a joke. It's vastly different than auto, injury, home owners etc.

Kind of the same as saying a person's had an accident so whatever they claim is true. Needs to be more information and the burden of demonstrating one's right to damages is up to the person making the claim.
Yeah, obviously the boxes must be checked. The frustration is when the process is designed to keep boxes unchecked. Image, an NFL team has already paid for rehab or surgery. The NFL team has already written those expenses off on taxes. All the necessary information is conveniently in one spot, but for some reason that information isn't passed along...

For one, possible hipaa violations. But seriously, the NFL isn't just going to dig through everyone's jumble of medical records to find the case for them. Thats not the way anything works.

The insurance industry, both private and Governmental, is an awful industry. The way they make money is to deny health care, deny as many payments as possible.
Their best way to make money for their shareholders is to screw... you.

Social Security Disability isn't any better. Initial Disability claims are denied at over a 90% rate. My wife, who has MS was immediately denied, even though she'd lost her job and had full references from multiple doctors... we'd contacted one of those firms who specialize in suing the Govt before he 2nd application was accepted.

The whole system is completely immoral.

Context matters here and it's hard to make a determination what actually is going on here. From the tweet, it seems that the NFL Disabilities Claim committee is denying "line-of-duty benefits".

This is what I've found about NFL line-of-duty benefits.

Former football players who are not totally and permanently disabled may be entitled to a short term disability benefit known as NFL Line of Duty disability (or LOD) where a player incurs a “substantial disablement arising out of NFL football activities.”

  • Line-of-Duty Disability Benefits (LOD) – shorter-term disability benefits that can last up to 90 months (7.5 years). Monthly payments are determined by the number of credited NFL seasons you have."

Wes Welker retired in 2017. I'm not sure what this part means (specifically the word "rate"): "Dr. Hussein Elkousy was unable to rate your various surgeries due to a lack of supportive documentation within your medical records." For context, Dr. Hussein Elkousy is an orthopedic surgeon in the Houston area. Do not know if this person is someone retained by either the NFL or Welker to do this.

But, it sounds to me that the NFL is saying "produce medical records that prove your medical issues are a direct result of playing in the NFL." To me, this sounds like an unreasonable burden. How many surgeries/medical issues should a "normal" 41 year old have?

The real problem here is that it's likely that people that play in the NFL for any significant amount of time will have lifelong impact on that player (CTE, joint replacements, etc): https://www.washingtonpost.com/sf/f...etired-nfl-players-endure-a-lifetime-of-hurt/

Yes, while the players are well compensated when they are playing, it sounds like the NFL has always dropped the ball when it comes to taking care of players after they've left the playing field.

Wes' home address in Houston is visible in the original post.

The deal to me here is systemic. And it’s on the NFLPA.

First, If a player plays, say, 4 full years he should get full medical coverage throughout his life.

Second, As to disability claims, what other sport would Welker have been trying to compete in outside of the NFL? I mean, what part of “99.9% an NFL player does physically is either playing or training be in shape to play?” And even non football injuries are likely related to the wear and tear of football. It’s not like he played 3 seasons on the PS, then 15 years later he tore an Achilles in a pickup basketball game.

Health care should be available to every American. It's simple in my mind. Just my opinion.
It is. It's just expensive and it's also garbage. The fact that when my Dad was sick that my mom, sister, or I had to be there in the room 100% of visitor hours for two months explains how idiotic the system is. Nurse would come in to give him an injection, pills, etc. What is that? Oh, it's ZYX. Ok, you know he takes ABC, that doesn't play well with that right? Oh, I'll get the Doctor. Ok. four hours later, a new nurse comes up and has no idea that the last interaction even happened. Doctor comes in two hours later. I'm from pediatrics. Hi, why are you here? I was asked to take a look at him. He's still 74. Are you going to make him younger? Rinse and repeat daily for months while your father wilts away on the bed.....

Its shocking how inept and incompetent some medical staff are and due to staff storages they never get fired until someone is injured or killed by them. Then they sweep it under the rug.
Sorry about your dad. Its rough

No need for digging. Left hand talks to right hand. Bureaucracy solved.

I don't think it unreasonable to request the medical records for the disability in question. Still I understand the frustration having dealt with health insurance providers, which typically causes ulcers that they likely won't cover.

I work in healthcare and I couldn’t agree more. Hospital systems are now big business ventures where the goal has shifted to funneling as much money upward as possible. They give about as much of a **** about you as a patient as McDonalds world headquarters gives about one individual hamburger. I genuinely do not think it’s sustainable.
