For those of you not familiar, Jack Del Rio was signed during Zachs Rookie year, and about halfway through training camp he retires, and basically gives the starting job to Zach Thomas. I am starting to think that Jr. may be thinking the same thing with all the lingering injury problems he has had this last year. Jr. is at the point like Marino, in that he has nothing left to prove to the NFL, and while he still has some gas in the tank, I am willing to bet that he is one of those players that would rather leave on his own terms instead of being forced out.

If I wanted to go out, I would have done it before the start of a training camp in South Florida. I think he's in for the season.

That's not how it happened. JJ cut Del Rio when he decided to make Zach the starter because JJ felt that Zach was playing the better of the two. Del Rio had played for JJ in Dallas and due to their history together, he said it was one of the most difficult cuts he ever made.

This is Junior Seau we are talking about. I highly doubt he gives up.

i thought the title of the thread was gonna say .... pulls a pectoral muscle.

I hope Junior does decide to retire. He'll make a great coach.

It's time for a young guy like Pope to have his chance.

i think he'd make a great cheer leader - than a coach. come on, you can picture it. some of those pictures of him are questionable.

I really don't know how to respond. Are you kidding? Are you serious? What do you mean?

Good Catch, but I prefer Curt Fennel's rundown on the event.

Del Rio was initially signed on June 2nd to replace Bryan Cox who left as a free agent to play for the Chicago Bears. Del Rio, who had played for Coach Johnson in Dallas, was considered to be the starting middle linebacker for the Dolphins. However, Del Rio was not in great shape when he reported to the Dolphins training camp in July and has not been terribly impressive in practice thus far. Thomas, on the other hand, has impressed nearly everyone who has seen him practice so far and has lead the team in tackles both during the Redskins scrimmage and during Saturday's preseason game against the Bucs. He had managed to work his way into the second string middle linebacker's job and now appears to have made it all the way to the starting slot.
But I have to wonder, was his bad shape part of his desire to quit? either way you ruined my whole question. In my defense, I was getting ready to go to boot camp that year, and I hardly had time to worry about football, also throw in the fact that internet wasn't something we had in my household at the time, and you get somebody who only saw the dolphins once every few weeks if they were lucky, and the only news availible was on USA today.

my thoughts exactly this is jr.seau this guy has sooooooo much fire and a much better lb than delrio ever was not to talk down on him but seau is the man..........

Sorry, didn't mean to ruin your question. As for Del Rio having a desire to quit, since he didn't quit until JJ cut him, we'll never know if not for getting cut whether or not he would have quit or played the entire season. As I recall, Del Rio was surprised when JJ cut him, and looking at Curt's comments from the link you gave, I'd say he was surprised too.
Wow! And another stunning player development rocks the team....

Well, it certainly seems as if JJ is not afraid to make changes to improve his team and get rid of players he feels won't make an impact. I wonder, however, why he didn't keep Del Rio on in a back up role. Perhaps he wanted to give Jack the chance to sign on with another team.

And Zach Thomas, a player I was uncertain about at first, but grew to like more and more as I learned about him, is now the starting middle linebacker.
