What are you prepared to pay for a LT? And who do you want?

Everyone wants a new LT, we aren't in a position to draft one so we need to pay to get one. I know some of you hate spending money on "non playmakers" but this is how the NFL works, you can have all the playmakers you like but if your QB is on IR it wont matter.

So here is the key question, how much are you prepared to pay?

I have been very blunt with the opinion that I did not expect Monroe to hit f.a. I still would be mildly surprised if he gets away after they traded for him. If he does hit free agency it means he wants silly money, as in 12 million per year for a young, good but not amazing tackle who struggled in the run game last year. Are you prepared to pay Monroe 12 million? Im not.

Then we have Brandon Albert - a good and never going to be great LT with an injury history. Are you prepared to pay him 10-11 million? There is not a chance in hell I would pay him anything near that.

Then we have the cheaper options of Anthony Collins and Jared Veldheer. Collins is the least experienced choice with only about a season and a half at LT, but he had a damn impressive spell at LT and he is much more affordable than other options. I think we could sign him for maybe 7-8 per year.

Veldheer is another interesting choice, like Monroe I thought he would not hit free agency but it looks very much like he will at this point. He is far from elite but he is young, athletic and would be a strong scheme fit in Miami. I am not sure what he will cost but I imagine he would come in somewhere between Collins and Albert.

These are pretty much our options, my question is what would you do? And how much would you pay?

My opinion is this: Monroe is the best in the class, however if he does hit free agency he is not worth 12m a year to me. That is the sort of money I would only be prepared to pay an elite, top 3 LT. EVen If I was willing to give him a huge front loaded deal to help the line, this year of all years that doesn't appeal as we need to sign at least a LG or RT in free agency as well in free agency.

I do not want Brandon Albert - no interest. None.

SO this leaves me with Veldheer and Collins. Frankly I would be happy with either. I suspect Veldheer will have a strong market which will inflate his price, but I would be willing to get in on this.

I have been high on Collins for a while and if I was GM I would make sure he was in Miami on the night free agency opens and sign him to something like a 4 year 27/28 million contract with maybe 16 guaranteed.

I should also point out that in my eyes Mckinnie is not a viable option.

He is old, has long standing injury issues and frankly he is just washed up. He was better than Martin last season but I thought he was an awful scheme fit, overweight and ineffective.

If mckinnie is a starter next season then hickey has failed

Monroe and Albert will be too expensive. Although I have a feeling we will pay one of them, I would prefer Collins first, then Veldheer. I agree about McKinnie. I want to keep him, but not as a starter. He is a fairly cheap backup, but his leadership is really whybi think he needs to stay.

Not convinced any LT in FA is worth north of 10mil. Can we go back in time and sign Jake Long to an new contract??

I'm not paying anything and I don't care what the organization pays as long as they put together a winner. Weather it be through the draft, free agency, or trade, it really doesn't matter. Just get it done.

Albert is the best player. Monroe and Veldheer are good players, but younger. I have no issue with any of the three.

We have the money so pay whatever it takes. No no need to get thrifty, if we need to break the bank to protect our QB so be it. Personally i don't care who we get as they all sound viable.

Plus, I am not convinced any LT will be there at 19. It has to get done next Tuesday.

yeah cause we all know how well over paying FAs worked for us last year...no LT is worth 8 million...

The cap money has to be spent. Thankfully we have put ourselves in a position to be able to overspend and fill our needs. Many teams are not as fortunate to be in our position. If there is ever a time to splurge on a LT, it is now.

While Monroe isn't necessarily expected to command a deal like the Philadelphia Eagles' Jason Peters ($48.3 million total, $9.57 million annual average, $19.55 million guaranteed) or the Houston Texans' Duane Brown ($55.492 million total, $8.9 million annual average, $22 million guaranteed) or the Denver Broncos' Ryan Clady ($52.5 million total, $10.5 million annual average, $33 million guaranteed), there are plenty of other comparisons.
Last year, the St. Louis Rams signed veteran offensive tackle Jake Long to a $34 million contract that averages $8.5 million per year and included $16 million guaranteed. Long was coming off some injuries, which depressed his value.
The Long deal and a few other recent contracts fall into that second tier of highest-compensated tackles.
That includes some players Monroe is arguably more valuable than, including: New York Giants offensive tackle William Beatty ($37.5 million total, $7.5 million annual average and $19 million guaranteed) Atlanta Falcons offensive tackle Sam Baker ($41.1 million total, $6.85 million annual average, $18.25 million guaranteed), Chicago Bears offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod ($35.96 million total, $7.1 million annual average, $17.715 million guaranteed and San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Anthony Davis ($37.3 million total, $6.5 million annual average and $17 million guaranteed).
Monroe should fit somewhere into this financial neighborhood.

Here is one opinion from the sun..

Sure....and I'm sure if we did Jake wouldn't get injured again like he did last year again on the Rams.......

and if Jake had never got injured he would have wanted paid more than 10m
