What do Philbin and/or Tannehill need to do to win back your support?

There is nothing Philbin can do at this point... there are certain guys that are just not meant to be a HC.. and he is one of them. Its a shame.. i hear he is an amazingly good man but he is not a leader of men... we need to move on regardless.

We won yesterday in spite of Philbin.. that was all Tannehill and Lazor.

When it comes to RT.. he is who he is... a good QB who can play great... if the coaches actually play to his strengths and hide his weaknesses. I have been in the Tannehill fan club since day 1 and have never waivered.

Let me guess. Losing to Buffalo and Kansas City was on Philbin right?

I would definitely pin those 2 losses on the coaching staff, absolutely. The team looked flat and unprepared to play in all 3 phases.

Basically Philbin can do nothing short of a miracle. And Tannehill can be mediocre to game manager and maintain his status.

The hate in the echo chamber is strong.

I dont understand people who THINK they know these things.

Anyways, my stance is..we at least need to have a 10-6 win season and make the playoffs for both RT and Philbin to be safe.

I can't believe your falling for this nonsense. Let me know when Philbin plays guard and gets pushed around by the Williams boys. Or when Philbin plays qb and is unable to make a simple screen pass. Or when he plays LB and can't make a tackle or plug a hole.

Coming out flat has more to do with a neutered locker room, more than anything else IMO. The franchise, league and national media did their part to clip the proverbial nuts from Miami's players.

I've been more down on Philbin than Tannehill and yesterday's game didn't do much to move the needle for me. I still think he is in over his head and want him replaced after the season.

In order for me to change my stance, Philbin needs to lead this team to a playoff VICTORY.

Simply making the playoffs isn't enough because the AFC is weak and we've seen many subpar coaches make the playoffs only to get trounced and never really achieve much higher success. Win a playoff game and I'll support Joe going forward.

How about you?

I agree that Miami needs to win some playoff games (At least one, but expect better then that) for both to prove themselves.

I agree that Philbin needs to prove himself far more then Tannehill in my eyes, but I also want to see consistent play in the regular and playoffs from him, nobody who actually wants a winning team, really wants another Matt Ryan.

I believe Tannehill can do this, it does mostly ride on him (Line does still need to block, and receivers do need to catch balls in their hands though), so as he goes, so will Miami.

Philbin: I'll never say never, but it'll be tough for him to win me back. Maybe if we sweep our remaining division games, and have a good playoff showing, and we get some kind of evidence that this whole controversy was actually part of some meticulous Philbin master plan and not Joe bungling the media like an idiot. So he would have to do a lot, yeah.

I get the sense that you haven't seen too many coach press conferences. Coaches get short with the media and say things all the time that just don't make sense to fans. Jimmy Johnson and Nick Saban were some great examples of that. And even Jim Harbaugh, the guy you keep saying is headed for Miami, has had more press conference bloopers than Philbin, JJ, and Saban combined. It makes for some shocking headlines, but at the expense of accuracy (we all know there was never any question as to who our starting QB would be). Philbin's refusal to answer some reporter's question (who was clearly trying to bait him into a headlining sounbdbite) is not why I'm firing a coach.

As far as I can tell to the "flat" experts we have on this forum our team always looks flat when the other team makes a play or our team misses a play. ALWAYS. Flat is just a synonym for losing at this point. I don't participate in game threads but I knew when Carr was completing those passes the experts on recognizing "flatness" would be all up in arms over how the team looked, and sure enough when I had a chance to check the thread after the game there they were in all their glory crying wolf once again. There is a reason its called a passing league. Perfect passes are indefensable, and sometimes when the other team's QB makes a play its just a good play. All NFL starters are capable of making good plays, even if its a rookie QB in his 4th start.

From the game thread:

another patented Philbin slow start?

damn dolphins d sucks big donkey balls. wheres the pressure?

I cannot believe the team is starting off slow.

Yup, starting to look like a Dolphins game...

I've been saying it... this defense sucks, especially the dbs

D looks like junk, wonder how sluggish the O will be.

First pick in draft here we come

Philbin effin sucks!

How do you make David Carr look good?

I think this team is going to quit on Philbin.

Wow this defense looks bad. That couldn't have been easier for them

Once again the team comes out not ready to play

So resident "flat" experts tell me this, at what moment did you realize team went from being flat to inspired? How did that happen?

I thought Kevin Coyle's defensive gameplan vs the Chiefs was questionable at best. I think the punt coverage has been awful because the coach cut his best gunners. I initially blamed Hickey for that, but it was rightly pointed out to me that once Hickey assembles the talent, Joe decides which fringe guys are going to be cut -- and Joe cut Don Jones. And I've seen this team come out flat too many times under Joe Philbin over the last 2.25 years that I can't just blame it on the national media. I'm talking 28-0 loss to the Patriots flat. 37-3 loss to the Titans flat. 29-10 loss to the Bills flat. 19-0 loss to the Bills flat. Those were team-wide meltdowns.

I just think that when a team comes out flat and unprepared and plays poorly in all three phases, it's on the coaching. The bottom line, though, is that it doesn't matter how I feel about Joe Philbin. I will continue to cheer for wins and support the coach as long as he is the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. It only matters what Steve Ross thinks.

I like Philbin, but not as a Head Coach. He's just not good enough to get this team to play consistently well; one week they look good, the next week they suck. It's not all his fault, as Ireland shares the blame and this has been going on since before they were hired.

As for Tannehill, if I were Ross I'd sit Ryan, Philbin, and Lazor down and tell them this: I'm paying big bucks to Wallace, and it is a complete waste of my money to not use his speed. When he gets open behind the defense, I expect my QB to connect on a lot of those deep passes. If you can't do it, then I'll find someone who can.

That said, I think that Tannehill would do better behind a big, strong o-line... a huge wall of beef. He doesn't look very good when he's constantly under pressure, as in the Buffalo game, and even against the Raiders in the second half.

Edited to add: Since I'm not well-versed in the technical aspects of the game, maybe I'll just keep my yap shut for a while and wait to see how they perform against Green Bay and Chicago. I will say that a win over the Raiders does not make up for the loss to Buffalo. Win your damn division games!

The team WAS flat. It's a freaking trend... You can try to explain it away all you want, but the team comes out listless and emotionless almost every single week. The only thing different about this week is that the Raiders are straight up awful. With a better opponent, I am confident they would have continued to struggle and get their bearings for a few series because they wouldn't have received the emotional boost that success against a woeful defense provided.

I don't have the time right now, but perhaps later tonight (unless someone else wants to do it) I will put together an analysis of 1st halves under Philbin.

The team rarely puts up big 1st half leads, and they rarely even score first. They are routinely slow out of the gates, and part of that is on Philbin.
