What happened to cutting Matt Moore?

Moore gained more yards on one pass than Tannehill had in three quarters in Buffalo. Yeah, he ended up throwing picks, but they weren't any worse than what Tannehill had done to that point. Perhaps that most crucial mistake Philbin made over the last two games was to force Tannehill back into action in Buffalo when his play could have been improved upon by a wide receiver playing emergency QB.
I don't know if that was talked about on the board at the time but I felt the same way. RT going back into the Bills game was crazy I thought - he was hurt and he was having a completely ineffective game. I couldn't help but think Philbin was trying at all costs to avoid a QB controversy instead of trying to win the game. Great call out bro - I think that move said a lot about what a wuss Philbin is.

That's how I feel. It's not that I hate Moore, but better things could be done with the money.

I also don't think he pushes Tannehill at all, as no one seriously thinks Moore will start barring injury, or 4-5 bad starts in a row from Tannehill. Philbin did not seem to be a fan when he first took the coaching gig, and I'm not sure that has really changed.

I think it's highly likely that Moore could start for performance reasons next year. Tannehill took impressive strides last year, but after his first couple starts next year he will have had enough experience to show that he can improve on his weaknesses (woeful deep ball, poor pocket awareness & movement) or show that he is forever going to be capped by them. He did an awful lot of good things last year, and in the end he still wasn't good enough when one more even average offensive effort would have brought us an elusive playoff berth. If he doesn't turn the corner next year, then perhaps he never will, and reports make it pretty clear that Philbin feels the same way. If he's not going to turn the corner, perhaps Philbin would rather see the upside that a capable downfield arm with some pocket movement ability attached can bring to the offense, instead of a then proven mediocrity.

I would like a younger, cheaper option at every position. Afterall we all saw how the LB swap worked out and they were hardly any cheaper.

At 30 I think he's getting a little long in the tooth to be anything more than a solid backup. My point is that we are lucky to have a class guy like him who genuinely seems to help Ryan.

What he said might make sense given the hell being raised by a handful of people for extra cap money WE DON'T NEED as we're not maxing out our cap, just so that we can sign one of the garbage backups out there on the market. The worse the QB, the even worse chance of Tanny gettin' yanked.

Fact is we need Matt. He comes off the books next year anyways. He's got experience running multiple offenses and he's a great piece of emergency in case Tanny struggles with his college security blanket now gone.

And here we go.

Matt Moore had 4 30 point performances in 12 starts, and one more when he relieved Tannehill for the bulk of a game. Tannehill has had two thirty point performances in 32 starts, 3 if you wrongly attribute the Jets game last year to him even though he played like 5 plays. That's why if he doesn't elevate his game next year, there will likely be a QB controversy. At times I've been as vocal a supporter of Tannehill as anyone on here, but after he choked at the end of a season that could have had some success as badly as Chad Henne choked at the end of games he could have won, you have to evaluate the entire package. Right now that package is limited by inability to stretch the field and inability to evade the pass rush. He deserves the chance to show growth next year, but he still has to actually do that.

In regards to the cap, it is not we have the money so spend it or it is gone and you start over next year. Now that you are able to take unused cap and apply it to the next year it is like a big savings account. Every year you save a little more and before you know it you can go out and buy that big shiny Revis at CB. If we spend 9 million on Moore for last year and this year we could rent a player like Revis or keep a player like Solai.

I honestly do not believe any of you think there is a future Superbowl winner at QB with Matt Moore........do you? If you do then we better start finding Richard Sherman type talent in the 6th rounds real soon.

WV threatened to tie up Ross and force him to continually watch tape of Nick Saban's tenure in Miami if Hickey traded or released Matt Moore.

I honestly don't believe we are a SB contender with Tannehill either, what kind of cap space could we free up releasing him? Signing Starks didn't make us a SB contender either, let's cut him too now that we've re-evaluated that players make us a legitimate SB contender or they aren't worth having.

The Seahawks weren't a legimate SB contender with Russell Wilson last year.

Great point about the carryover cap space, I tend to forget about that.

These are the reasons to spend significant money on a backup QB:

-there is no designated starter, and the veteran "backup" has a good chance of winning the job
-the projected starter has little or no starting experience
-the projected starter is a significant injury risk
-you're a top contender and need someone to keep you headed to the playoffs if your QB goes out for a month or two

None of these apply to Tannehill or the Dolphins.

You say one must evaluate the entire package but seemingly put most of the blame on RT for "choking"... Truth be told the ENTIRE team choked (including coaching). One realistically cannot blame it all on one person.

I agree. Just think the idea that some posters don't want Moore because he is a threat to Tannehill is silly.

Matt Moore is one of the best backup OB's in the league. Tanny goes does down for a couple games he is one of a few backups who could actually have a chance to win those close games.. This is a quarterback driven league and I for one like the insurance he provides. Moore could be the different between playoffs and another year missed. I see Moore as 5 million well spent!
