What has Roth done at DL that has everyone so high on him?

Exactly. He's looked good in 2 pre season games.

Which means absolutely nothing.

To value picks in this years draft right now is like throwing darts in the dark. Roth was an excellent DE in college and that's the only thing you can really evaluate.

I think you believe I wanted Kyle Orton on draft day. I didn't. He was just an example from what I read in another post.

I merely wanted to find out why everyone seems to love the guys so much (without great results...so far). I thought maybe it was a practice thing or inside information.

As fara as saying "He's looked good in 2 pre season games" ...what else do I have to judge Klye or Roth on so far????

Hey Perfect,
I'm not going to hit you over the head or anything like that:D I really didn't see a lot from Roth except a nice motor in the first few preseason games, which I only saw on TV. I went to the Pittsburgh game last week and paid close attention to hime live and came away with the belief that he will be a special player for us for a long time. He was creating havoc against anyone he faced at tackle eventhough they were bigger than him (i.e. Max Starks). He put a constant pressure in the backfield against both run or pass, first team or 2nd. I saw more so live than what you see on tv where his non stop motor is going to be a drive killer in the end for the offense we face. You may see him get knocked to the ground, but he's wright backup and on the chase again. He refuses to stay down until the plays dead and that characteristic is going to make him a scary player for the opposition for a very long time.

Sorry it was sol long of a post, but I just wanted to give you the reasons that Roth has made a believer out of me.

Thanks D-bolt...this was exactly what I was looking for from this post.

I agree that you see more at the games than on my tivo replays. This gives me more to go on.

People love Roth because of who he is. He has an engine, he's nasty and loves the game, I guess it's for the same reason people like Bua.

As far as judging people so far, we really can't this early.

Well, here is to hoping he is the next JT or better!!!! I hope all of our picks end up being great..I'm tired of not winning our division.

No problem That's what I thought you were looking for. If you go back and watch the Pittsburgh game Roth and Crowder worked very well as a tandem creating havoc against the right side of Pitts line. The only other young D-player that was worthy of mention during that game was Vickerson, man he was really playing the on other side of the line Saturday. So I really think this is the core of our future as I've seen a great progression from all of these guys from one game to the next. It just seemed at that Pitt game everyhting started to click for these rookies and I can't wait to see them tonight.

I agree man. I hope to see him line up across from JT at some point, but sadly not all rookies are instant impact. Take Vernon Carey, people were just about ready to label him a bust after his first year, and now he's suddenly the best player on our line.

I am a little shocked reading some of the other posts here where people are saying that we could have had this player in the draft or this player instead of picking Roth, Daniels etc. One example being Kyle Orton (QB).

What confuses me is how many posters say they love Roth, he was a great pick, etc.

All I have seen from him so far is a great motor. Too bad that motor hasn't gotten him anywhere (hardly) as of yet on the playing field. Now, I am not ready to say the guy is a bust. Maybe all he needs to do is learn better techniques and gain some stength. I'm just surprised how many posters love this guy already. He has not set the world on fire yet? Please explain...maybe it is something posters are seeing in practice???

The fact that you even mentioned the word bust at this stage in his career (3 preseason games) is silly. NFL tackles are a heck of a lot better than those in college. Most DE's have to learn to put together a combination of moves to get past a solid NFL tackle.

the key with roth IS his motor and drive. How many plays have we seen get blown up because a player quit on a play or on the other hand how many plays have we seen where a player with max effort made an impact because of his motor. Roth will get stronger and will learn technique but he has the intangibles to make special plays.

I like Roth he looks like he can easily become a good DE. I am a little shocked on how much people instantly loved him and that no one really questioned why we picked him up when our D-line is already pretty set except for DE's. I doubt this guys a bust.

I think and agree with most of you that this guy will be an impact player once he has some experience under his belt. The good thing in my opinion is that this year he is a luxury. We already have a pretty hard nosed line with good ends and if it takes him some time to bring his game up to where JT is we're okay. Even though their builds and styles are different, who better to learn from than JT.....

Instant gradification working once again. Already knocking a 2nd Rd pick when the season has not started yet.

There is such a thing as player development. Roth might need a year or so to learn at the NFL level.
