What I believe is really going on with Fisher

Thanks CK...I had speculated in a post that he was waiting for the Rams to get off the pot and the Dolphins were just being used...you pretty much back it up.

I don't see how you got that from what he described. It sounds like he was/is waiting for the best offer...

I've heard some different things to day and it's all interesting.

I've heard that Fisher wants the Fins, but how much control he gets is an issue

I've heard exactly what CK said about Fisher wanting to work with Ireland

I've heard that he wants the Rams, but the money isn't right

I've heard that the Rams have given up on Fisher and are going to hire either Chud or Ray Horton

I've heard that Miami is lining up another round of interviews like Mike McCoy

I've heard Miami is ready to give up on Fisher and is telling Zimmer to put a staff together.

Honestly, if we get Fisher fine, if not fine.

That would be tragic if Fisher now agrees to come to Miami.

CK, do you support the hiring of jeff fisher? I don't know how I would feel about switching to a 4-3. I just hope he doesn't let randy starks walk again if he does come here.

I think you just hit the nail on the head.

This is not a straight forward situation for Steve Ross. He's caught in a bad spot. Jeff Ireland has authority written into his contract that Jeff Fisher wants in his own contract. Not necessarily final say, but it's clear Fisher wants personnel authority on SOME things. Maybe all, I'm not sure. But at the same time, the front office infrastructure of Miami is being cited by Fisher as one of the reasons he wants Miami. So Ross is stuck between a rock and a hard place. He can't just bully Ireland into giving up the power, because Ireland will quit, and then Miami will lose Jeff Fisher because Fisher likes Ireland. But Ireland himself doesn't really want to give up his authority I'm sure, even if he wants Jeff Fisher.

It's like a stalemate. But someone's got to crack so we'll see. Schefter says he expects something in the next 24 hours, which means Jeff Fisher expects something in the next 24 hours. But as Schefter says, Jeff Fisher expected this to be done two days ago, so who knows.

From the purely political perspective though I don't know why Ireland would think he would get a better setup in St. Louis than in Miami. It's not like Jeff Fisher would bring him in and then give him final say. No way. If anything not having champions like Ross and Peterson around (and the loyalty of the front office staff) to back him up would leave him even more neutered there than any version of the rewriting of his contract here would do.

Obviously Ireland wants a guy like Toub he can boss around but he seems practical enough to figure this out once his ego calms down.

Maybe Ross just figures that once he starts down this path there's no going back. That it's one of those situations where he's either going to land both guys or potentially lose both guys. I can understand him being scared by that, but I think he's misreading Ireland's leverage if he does.

What it sounds like from Schefter's interview (and I'm just guessing) is that Ross has been pushing for fuzziness in the details of who's exactly empowered to do what in order to avoid this exact argument but that Fisher isn't having any of it. He wants it written in stone.

I don't blame him. I only hope that if it comes down to it Ross won't hesitate more than three seconds to jettison Ireland if that's what it takes. I'd like to believe he won't but I'm honestly not so sure. This delay has only reinforced that fear.

i don't really see where if this was the case ireland would have any leverage here...if ross gives in to these so called demands that are floating of fishs and gives him the power over personnel etc that ireland currently has ireland can either be a good soldier and take one for the team and give up some of his say over things or hit the road...in the event he did leave who really thinks with gm jobs around the league already filled he can do better for himself elsewhere this offseason??? i'm not seeing it...imo irelands the one in a rock and a hard place if this is true...

In short, Jeff Ireland.

Jeff Ireland is both a blessing and a curse, it appears.

He's a blessing in that Fisher really likes him and even would think about hiring him as his GM in St. Louis if that were a possibility.

But at the same time he's a curse because he CURRENTLY has the things written into his contract that Jeff Fisher wants written into his own contract.

Miami can't just take those things away from Fisher without his say-so. They'd have to fire him.

But oh, wait...Fisher LIKES Ireland. So if you fire Ireland then Fisher goes to the Rams and hires Jeff Ireland as his GM over there.

Tricky situation.

OK, if you say so. Your ideas sound no better or worse than any of the other ideas out there.

I think the real answer is real simple though, and Fintern gave you credit on his podcast for just this answer:

Fisher went to Denver on Sunday and said he would need the end of the week to decide. It ain't the end of the week yet. End of story.

Is Fisher REALLY that good to give up the farm (i.e. Big $$$, total control, final say, special clauses, latte machine...)

Wouldn't it be better to get someone who is really HUNGRY to coach and REALLY wants to coach the Miami Dolphins?

I want Fisher, but if it doesn't work than F it!!! I'm sick of looking like the chumps all the time.
Hey Fish... make a decision already because I'm starting to want nothing to do with you.

"Hunger" is less important than ability. If all the job required was a desire to coach the team, we could have just kept Sparano. Turns out it's one of those things you can't just get done with "want to."

Make a decision already? He said he wanted until the end of the week. I don't understand why nobody can understand that.

He was the coach of a team that moved already, and it was a mess. I can imagine he wouldn't be fond of having to go through that all over again...

Should the ewes migrate back to LA; I don't see that as traumatic as going from Houston to LA. Strangely, it might be a plus for Fisher.

I could live w/ Fisher; Zimmer being my preference.

P.S. What is it recently w/ people deciding to come to Miami and jerking the general public around?

Saban had the ability and no "hunger". He left us high and dry because he had no desire to coach in the NFL. Hunger is just as important as ability.

I dispute that he had the ability, first off. He was sub-.500 as an NFL head coach and there's really no evidence he was destined to be more. Dave Hyde came out a few days ago and said part of the reason Saban quit was because he was convinced he was going to be fired.

Saban never particularly wanted to be out of college and when he found a nice warm ****hole to crawl back into he jumped at the chance. Fisher, on the other hand, is an NFL guy through and through. One who left the job he'd held previously for 17 years because he finally got fed up with his ******* of an owner.

Totally different situations. If anything the charge of being not hungry should now be applied to Bill Cowher and Jon Gruden. Buyer beware on those two, imo. They seem happy on TV and know they'll always be a place for them if things get sticky on the field.

By contrast, Fisher is plenty hungry. This isn't a guy who's been milking a studio job. Even being out of coaching he stayed active with the competition committee and other things related to officiating. He's been studying film. He apparently already has a staff mostly in place once the papers are signed, which shows you his contacts are still active.

The guy just wants things the way that he wants them. He's not going to jump into a situation he doesn't like just because his balls itch. He knows someone will cave eventually and he feels that the demands he's making are important toward winning, or either way will allow him to avoid a potential ****around over nickel and dime stuff Bud Adams was apparently up his *** about (like the number of chiropractors who travel with the team).

It's annoying to wait but as Dolphins' fans we've been wasting decades here following this team. Ten seconds after he signs the dotted line (if that's indeed what happens) we'll have forgotten this whole thing.

A guy with a mediocre track record is making the Dolphins his b**** with the wait. Color me unhappy. I don't want him anyway.

Ck have you heard anything like Chambers said about them contacting Zimmer to put a staff together?
