What Quality does Nick bring that we needed the most?

I think the leadership bit is overrated. Its a word that's thrown around so much that I doubt it has any meaning left. Leadership whether its football or business or war comes down to one denominator - winning. So long as people believe that they will win with you at the helm they will follow you. Saban has that for now. I do believe the Dolphin players believe in him and are willing to do what he demands for now. So long as positive results follow they will continue to follow. Should the team continue losing you will find the beginnings of doubt creep in. It is imperative for Saban to show that the sinking ship has been righted and even if we dont have a winning season this year that next year we will be able to start inflicting our own brand of pain on our opponents.

Now the factors that he seems to possess that can lead to winning in this league are an innovative mind when it comes to schemes and strategy (at least when it comes to defense which wins championships). He also seems to be able to communicate with his players although I'm not sure whether its him or the fact that our players want to believe he knows what he's doing. The other factor that I get a sense of that seems critical to success is that he tends to lack arrogance and seems to know what his weaknesses are. I'm just reading in between the lines so I may be wrong about that but if he does have that sense that is a very critical component of successful people. It allows them to drop what isnt working and experiment constantly until a winning formula presents itself.

Although, I have doubts about his quarterback and offensive line moves so far (I attribute this to my perception that he still has alot to learn about offense) I feel that he does have several of the key qualities that lead to winning and overall I like how he has handled this team. My grade for this offseason and training camp is B+. and if he learns from the invariable mistakes he will make this season he could end up being one of the great ones

I suppose that's one way to get the job done. Doesn't sound all that different from what Manny Wright went through at the beginning of camp...

It was a learning experience that I needed. If i had to do it all over again, I would.

At the end of Shula's career fans were calling for his head.

JJ came in a lot like Saban. Infallible in the fans eyes. By the end, we wished we had a Hershel Walker to trade.

Wannstedt won a division title in his first year, but the inability to draft or develop a QB or offensive line did him in. Fans were calling for his head.

Saban is a lot like JJ in that he comes in with credibility, unlike a promoted assistant might, and there is a top candidate air about him. What makes me optimistic is that Saban is approaching this without the ego that Jimmy did. He doesn't need to piss all over the past in order to make himself look good. He is not an offensive guy, so he hires the best coordinator available.

I just hope the fans are not all calling for Saban's head in two or three years....stay tuned

I was ready to jump all over ya when I read the first couple of paragraphs, but then you covered the base with the big paragraph. Saban isnt anything like JJ. He is intelligence over the ego for sure. If Saban doesnt get to the big dance in a couple of years, I dont see myself calling for his head unless he didnt make this team a winning team. And I know that aint gonna happen. There are great coaches in the NFL who have never won the big trophy. doesnt mean they should go. Cowher is a perfect example.

BTW, I think the best quality Saban brings is communication skills. I mean, he got a headcase to turn his attitude around(and the whole rest of the worlds attitude towards the man)in Ricky Williams and he believes in building brick by brick until the masterpiece is finished.

Shula was a God, he started getting soft, jj came with guns-ablazing, did great in the evaluation of young talent, speed not size, especially on defense. He couldn't get a rb to be sonsistent enough, Abdul-Jabbar did somewhat good for the few years he was here, but look @ the following drafts. He did awsome on the defensive side of the ball, Thomas,madison, Taylor, Surtain, Mixon, Bromell, they all performed well. Offensively, he didn't Abdul-Jabbar was the only one who really excelled @ all. He picked Yatil, hurt, never made it through a camp with anyone, really, JJ Johnson, Cecil The Diesel (could've been great had he kept his head on straight), John Avery, all strike outs. The only other back that stayed or produced was Konrad, what little he did do.I think had Jimmy Johnson stayed & not handed the reigns over to Wanny, we would've been a big time contended now, with a potent offense. Now we have Saban, very disciplined, high evaluator of talent, has his head on straight, even if it his first year. He has turned around every college program that he's been in control of, glad to see him @ the reigns now. It might not happen of the bat, but in the near future.

discipline? accountability? I hope so, and we'll see. I love Saban(not in a gay way or anything), but 8 turnovers...false starts??? where is the discipline and accountabitlity? I hope it shows up in the regular season.
