What was the most disapointing loss in Dolphin history?

Wow, after reading all these I`ve come to the conclusion, that we`ve had a helluva lot of heartbreakers in our history. It seems as if God is saying "I`ll give you an undefeated season, another SB win the year after...then nothing but pain and suffering for the next 30 years."

Dude, if you really love football and are really devoted to a favorite team, you're bound to experience hearbreak...it's inevitable.

Dude, I`ve been watching Miami since 1972, and I`ve seen every one of these losses...some in person, some not, but we`ve lost alot of big games since we last won a championship. 30 years worth, but I`ll never root for anybody but the Dolphins.

Hard for me to seperate these 2 losses, they are so equally close to me as far as being heart breakers. The loss were Kenny Stabler was had around the ankles going down and 3-4 dolphins surrounded the Raider receiver in the end zone, but he still caught the ball and Miami lost a chance to go to their 3rd straight Super Bowl. And also the other one was Marino's only Super Bowl and the loss to the 49ers and Montanna. Dans only Super Bowl , and I sure hated to see him not win that one.

The heartbreaking losses are what make success all the more sweet. If we, as fans, don't take the emotional rollercoaster with the Dolphins, than winning won't feel nearly as good. Just look at the Red Sox...that championship felt way better to their fans, as a whole, than a championship would to Yankee fans (relatively speaking...as any championship for your team is the pinnacle of happiness as a fan).

My biggest heartbreak had to be that Patriot game in 2002....I can't remember any superbowls:(

agreed! That was horrible!

Well, it seems there is no consensus on which one is the single most disapointing loss, I really enjoyed reading everyones take on it though.

One last thought that I didn't mention about my choice, that 1985 AFC Championship game not only ended our games played at the Orange Bowl, where we were really hard to beat, but in another sense kind of ended the Shula era's greatness.

Yes we did get back to one more AFC Championship game under Shula but most of what followed that 1985 AFC Championship game was disapointing, really we haven't had that swagger since.

Perhaps the 20 year hex of that game ends this year with the arrival of Saban.

Not that this has any business being in a "Most Disappointing Loss" thread, but another thread on the board right now called "Anyone miss DW the OC?" reminded me of a recent game...

My Wife and I spent over $500 bones to sit dead on the 50 yd. line in the 1st row for the Miami/Buffalo game in which RW ran for well over 200 yards... and we still lost.

Lucas got hurt, Fiedler came back too early, our Defense totally choked, Jim Kelly was roaming the sidelines (obviously drunk as hell) and was being shown on the big screen (which sent the Bills fans into hysteria), and in the 4th quarter during a commercial break a huge blizzard poured over the wall at one end of the stadium, totally engulfing the stadium and all but blacking it out.

Between weather and traffic, what is normally about an hour to hour and a half drive took over three hours. When we got home I promptly took to tape out of the VCR and threw it in the garbage without even watching it.

Now that, my friends, was disappointing. Not "all-time" disappointing, but disappointing nonetheless.

Miracle in the Meadowlands. I've only been a fan since 91 but that one far and away tops the list.

All this Marino talk got me to thinking about this.....obviously there are many candidates for this.

1) The playoff loss to Oakland 28-26 in the 1974 playoffs where the Dolphins were trying for an unprecented third consecutive Superbowl title, everyone must remember the Stabler throw at the end with Vern Den Herder dragging him down.

2) The triple overtime playoff loss to San Diego in 1981 41-38.

3) Some younger fans might say the 62-7 playoff loss to JAX that ended the Johnson era, for me its not the most disapointing because I didn't feel we were good enough that year anyway.

For me......its the 1985 AFC Championship game at the Orange Bowl, the year the Bears were dominant and only lost to Marino and the Dolphins on Monday night, we should have beaten the Pats that day and Marino should have had his second crack at a Superbowl win against that great Bears team he had already beaten....instead the Dolphins fumbled the ball 5 or 6 times(can't remember which one) and the Patsies went on to get slaughtered in Superbowl XX.

Any team that played Chicago that day was going to get slaughtered so maybe you are lucky you got upset by NE?

The "Miracle in the Meadowlands" was the Giants botching a kneel down situation and the Eagles Herm Edwards recovering the fumble and running it in for the winning score in 1978. The "Monday Night Miracle" was the game you are thinking of :D

I'd forgotten that it was Herm who took advantage of the immortally inept Joe Pisarcik.

Playoff loss to the patriots if we didnt freaking turn the ball over so many times we would have won and gone to the super bowl and whooped the bears again that year and dan would have his ring.

Well there were few. The 74 loss to raiders, the Super bowl loss to teh skins in 82 strike year. One that I didnt like was teh buffalo playoff loss in 95 that sealed Shulas fate. I didnt want to see Shula go out that way.
