What's the one play that best describes Marino?

Mine would be the game that we needed a TD to win, I forget against who or when, but it was 4th and 10 from like mid field. Obviously the DB's thought short 10 yard routes right? Wrong! Marino gave a sign to Gadsden on the far right side, and Gadsden went straight up the field for the catch, and then out of bounds on the 5. That does it for me, absolutly fearless throw.

If memory serves me coreectly, that was the game at Indy in '99.

Dan to me was a lot of things, but few were better at leading the 4th quarter comeback- the only guy on Dan's level was Elway when it came to that. It demonstrated his great persoverance. THAT was what Dan marino was all about- persoverance- that never-say-die mentality that he dislpayed his entire career. As great as the fake spike was, Dan led us all the way back in that game and that to me is what made that win special- the fake spike was the icing on the cake. The other game that comes to mind right away was the season opener in '94 against New England- his first game back after the achilles. That performance was just an incredible memo to the rest of the NFL from Dan that said "I'M BACK MOTHER****AS"!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT was special.

I have to say the Fake Spike and I will tell you why. It was the epitome of Dan because it symbolized how we were never out of a game, how he could keep a defense off ballance and the chemistry he created with all his recivors. I was at the fake spike, allbeit I was seven years old. Marino was the kind of player who made you drop your jaw in disbelief and the fake Spike symbolizes that. Alright, you dont like the fake spike, I will begrudgingly agree on the 4th and 10 pass in the '99 playoffs. That pass was nasty

Dan neither devised the play or called it, so it doesnt really display Dans intelligence or football IQ. The pass was a floater with no passrush so quick release was not a factor. Again, no passrush so Im not sure how toughness applies. Comeback ability...this could be said of the drive to get them in position for the clock play, but not so much for the play itself.

The fake spike (or clock play) is a very poor example of what made Dan great. It was a one time gimmick play that happened to work, and one that any starting or backup QB in the league could have successfully executed. Dan was so much better than that.
Thank you, someone agrees.

If you look at it from a pure tallent/playing style standpoint, you are right. I just think the Fake Spike(and yes, it does deserve to be capitolized) symbolized the Marino attitude that we were never out of a game and that we would find a way to win. Like I said, if you judge it from a athletic and Marino play standpoint, its gotta be the 4th and 10 in the '99 playoff game against the Colts

The two minute drill (any of them) IMO thats where Marino was most dangerous and you really seen his intensity come out.

I was at that game (my first in Miami) it was a great game and I believe it was Marinos last 5 TD game of his career, ironically it was a 3rd and long run by Marino through the muddy infield (on the untested achilles) which turned the game around in Miamis favor.

If I remember correctly the Fake spike play was Bernie Kosar's idea.I believe Dan even gave Bernie credit for the call after the game.If anyone knows differently please correct me.Still an awesome play though.

Why the fake spike? Because it displayed Marino's intelligence, quick release, comeback ability, Football IQ, and toughness, all in a single play.

I'll put the Steeler's play second. First for me was the opening game of the 94 season against New England when he was coming of the injury and people questioned if he would still be able to play. Late in the game with the Dolphins behind, 4th and long with the game on the line he throws a long touchdown to Fryar to win it. That's what Marino was about. The guts to throw the ball anywhere anytime under any circumstance. And he would do it when they needed it most.

Without a doubt this game against Bledsoe and the Pats opitomizes what Dan was all about....there was an article in the Boston Globe just before the game by a writer named Michael Madden saying how SAD it was to see Dan limping around and how Dan's career was OVER. I still have that article in my collection.....I cut it out BEFORE the game.....

The game winning TD toss was especially great because I believe it came on a 4th and SHORT....not 4th and long. Marino gets under center....4th and short....rain drenched field....time running out...crowd going crazy....looks to his right.....sees Fryar matched up man to man...bravely calls an AUDIBLE out of the called short pass and goes for it all with the long pass down the right sideline....YESSSSS!!!!!!

Dan did give Credit to Bernie Kosar. Dan said that he and Bernie had discussed just that type of play over and over again, and then Dan said that he saw the defense relax as he called out the clock play... he gave Mark Ingram the "look" and Ingram took off on the DB, turned around and the rest is history. So actually, Dan did call the play and credit to Kosar or not, devised at least his version of it. In Fact, Shula and the Stevens both said they didn't know what had happen until Dan got to the sideline. A lack of pass rush does not negate a quick release, there could be NO DEFENSE on the field at all and someone can still have a quick release. Without the quick release, the cornerback has time to recognize what's up and can react to it. The overall driver itself emcompasses the "comeback ability". The play just cements it! That play displayed alot of what Marino was about, however, he still had too many plays to be defined by one single play.

Marino vs. Montana, best game ever by the both of them, chiefs dolphins... One play couldn't define marino, but one game certainly could.

Nothing describes Dan better than the Fake Spike....especially since it came against the hated Jets.....here is Dan celebrating after the Spike...
