when will the media realize we control our own destiny?

yep because the best the Ravens can finish is 10-6 while the Bengals can finish 11-5. If both win this week or both lose one is going home after their week 17 game.

Now the thing that will be interesting is if we beat Buffalo and the Ravens beat the Pats. People will talk about the scenario that the Pats could miss the playoffs entirely

and if the Pats do miss the playoffs, we'll have an 8 team playoff format next year

Considering all the games this year where the Patriots were trailing by double digits in the second half (Denver, Cleveland, first Miami game).....New England could easily be in a much more precarious position than they are.

You guys need to get some new sources, I rarely get my NFL news from the mothership.

NFL.com had an article that mentioned we control our own destiny and Pro Football Talk specifically mentioned we control our own destiny on the show yesterday.

Side note to the OP, is your screen name a Pearl Jam reference?

Sports media, as well as all media have gotten past being true journalists who know silly things like "facts", and now consist of blowhards who spout "opinions" and the straight men/women who set them up with pre written script designed to generate the most controversy(ratings).

Sad state of affairs

The new "Kraft/Brady Playoff" rule. 6 teams make it to the playoffs unless....
NE is 7th seed than the wildcard will be expanded by one team and the #7 seed will get a bye as a bonus
NE is #8 seed two more wild card spots are given

and so on....

How do we get in without the ravens losing exactly? I'm serious, I don't get it.

Assume the Dolphins, Ravens, and Bengals all win in week 16. The Dolphins and Ravens enter week 17 at 9-6, the Bengals enter at 10-5. The Dolphins win in week 17 against the Jets. Baltimore and Cincinnati play each other in week 17. If Baltimore wins that game Baltimore wins the AFC North on tiebreakers and drops Cincinnati into a tie with the Dolphins at 10-6 for the 6th seed. We beat Cincinnati head-to-head earlier this year, so we get the tiebreaker. Say the Cincinnati/Baltimore game in week 17 ends in a tie. We would be 10-6, Baltimore would be 9-6-1, we would have the better record, so we would get in. Thus, we control our own destiny. Win our final two games and we are in the playoffs. The only thing that can change is which team drops out of the playoffs between Cincinatti and Baltimore. Another possible scenario is if New England loses against Baltimore and Buffalo while the Dolphins win out. The Dolphins would then win the AFC East and get a home game in the first round. Or if a crazy series of Donimoes fall it is actually still possible for Miami to get a bye in the first round (Week 16: Dolphins beat Bills, Ravens Beat Pats, Chiefs beat Colts, Vikings beat Bengals; Week 17: Dolphins beat Jets, Bills beat Pats, Bengals beat Ravens)

If we win out and the Patriots don't lose out, one of those teams is going home regardless of what happens.

While listening to the radio this morn, I keep hearing a lot of chatter about the ravens making the playoffs , the ravens are going to make another run in post season, the ravens are getting hot at the right time. Let them go ahead and talk the ravens up because almost every time they do this the team loses the next week. Same thing happened to the bengals last week. I prefer to have the fins fly under the radar.

Bill Barnwell just admitted on Twitter he messed up the scenario in his column...is going to correct it.

Play with this machine if you don't believe that if Miami wins out they are in:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/machine

Bottom line: Cincy and Baltimore play each other in week 17, if the Ravens win they are in and Miami is the 6th seed at Indy. Cincy wins and they are in and Miami is the 6th seed at the Pats. Balt/Cincy tie Cincy is in and Miami is the 6th seed and plays at Cincy.

Bottom line is Miami needs to win out baby!

Dolphins can get in even with a loss if either Cincy or Baltimore lose their last two...
