What was wrong with Sam last night?

He whiffed on a running play while he was blitzing...he also made a great play on a slant...a play that maybe a half dozen guys in football make...the penatly was TOTAL crap.

Calling out Sam for anythinglast night is a case of TRYING to find something else to whine about because you can not get anymore attention bashing A.J. or the O-line.

Now....Howard?

HE was awful....

I thought Madison played good also. The play he made on the pass interference call was great, and the calls was garbage, and I was an official not on the NFL level though. I think the corners will get beat more this season, because I don't think that Saban will have the safeties playing deep like Bates used often. Madden who lost whatever he knew back before his first video game was made, couldn't get the call right either. Reggie Howard is misplaced, I don't know what he can do. Travis Daniels should start opposite of Madison. It's kinda weird that Madison, a guy who played better than Surtain last season, gets criticized so often on this site, he was the best CB on the team last season, and is the best CB on the team this year.

Madison or Howard? Madison was fine. Corners are supposed to cover not tackle, and he is the best on this team by a large margin. He also made two nice tackles though. You must have missed them.

Howard was absolutely awefull. When Daniel's was in he was OK, but had it not been for a bad throw, he would have been torched for a TD. Not all his fault but he kept himself to far inside, and got turned even farther by a head fake.

The Safeties were the biggest problem. When you see a Cb get torched, without a safety even in the picture, that's sad. Although there was some safety blitzes going on.

They better use more corner blitzes because the safety blitz with slower safeties means trouble.

Donald Lee must have some nekked pics of someone....

I am sorry, but on a blitz the corner not tackling crap can be thrown out the window. It's his job to notice the run coming his way on that and jack that guy up! Not run by like a wussy and then very slowly jog after him. I don't think he wanted to tackle, all i see from him is lazy arm tackles.

Note to Madison if he reads this message board, GROW SOME BALLS!

If he nailed that guy it could have been a fumble since he was close to the handoff. Not a 20 yard gain the other way. That one play by him disgusted me, you don't win Superbowls with that crap.

this is b.s. if i was getting paid millions of dollars i would learn how to do my job...these idiots get burned all day long. i fin hate howard he is a peice of trash at cb

If you were getting paid millions of dollars, you'd probably already know how to do your job. Comparing atheletes to average workers is crazy.

Don't be sorry.... You want a Corner who is a great tackler, I'll show you 9 times out of 10, a Corner who is muscular, slow, and a liability in coverage.

The problem is that these Corners bodies are not made to be thrown at some 220 pound Rb. Sure there are some who can cover and make great open field tackles like Winfield, but they are few and far between. Madison was a sorry tackler when he came into the league, but over the last three years he has improved quite a lot.

Your a lot less likely not to win a Sb when your teams top Corners go down with injuries....

It's a new system, but they did look bad. The quick slant plays killed us, but I think the safteys played horrible also, a few times the corners stopped in their zone only to have the saftey getting there late (Bua many times)
i agree 100% what happened to jamming the guy at the line? i couldnt figure out why we werent doing that?:fire:

Yeah but for him to not even slow the RB down? I mean come on. Nobody said Sam had to tackle him in the chest, just tangle up is legs or get in his way. Slow him down for others on the defense to react.

You don't have to be muscular to tackle, tons of corners in the league can do both. Last I checked I didn't see Sam's non tackling style getting us any ints lately either.

You can't let someone run past you for a 20+ yard gain, even more so when you could have done something about it.

As for a top corner going down with injury hurting the chances for a SB, yeah sure hurted NE. Giving up big plays at bad times hurts more.

Sam should take lessons from Dunta Robinson of the Texans. He is smaller than Madison, and is the BEST tackling corner in the NFL. And he can cover. You don't have to be muscular. If you watch Dunta, he usually grabs the ankles and rolls, or just holds on until help arrives. Why can't Sam do that?

Dunta is one inch smaller and weights the same. AND he started out as a Safety in College. His upper body is more muscular. He does not always tackle the legs, he can also hit. There are probably 7-10 Corners in the entire league who are real good tacklers and great cover corners, and 2-3 of them are not the best in coverage. Ty Law, Winfield, Robinson, Champ, are all in that catagory. That list gets harder to find from there. Will Poole might be one if his recovery is 100% perfect.

Madison, like a lot of Corners, is brittle. You mention why don't he just grab and hold on until help arrives but that's what he does the most. Madison was a lot worse when he first came here, and has improved the last two years. It won't show in his stats because teams mostly ran the ball right up the gut on the defense last year. But the year before it shows.

I'm not saying he is this great tackler, but until all Corners are built to do both, they are best suited to do more of what their position suggest, and that's cover.

Your talking about one play, in a preseaon game. I'd much rather he try and get the guy from behind in preseason because if he goes down the secondary is done.

I think the entire team looked good considering... New EVERYTHING. This was a glorified practice on national TV. There is still more then a month before the first real game... The key is to learn, which I think they are doing, staying postive, and staying healthy... That's what we should all be concerned with right now. I think they played hard, and I'm happy with the entire end result. Forget about who missed what, or who sucks... I trust Saban to make the changes where necessary... I saw Saban at the defensive bench after a difficult series. I never say Dave do that... This guy is coaching... And he has shown he will do what he needs to...

You can pretty much count on Howard and Lee getting cut soon. Lee is horrible, and wasn't Howard the guy that was served his lunch by Chambers on that Thanksgiving blow out?

All in all, it was a good first look... Now time to make adjustments. Game 2 on Saturday.

I hope what Saban was doing primarily is looking to "weed out" the culs, and it will probably take all of the preseason games to do so...If this is what he's doing and not particularly worrying about "wins" in the PS I'll feel better about it...BTW when is the first cut?........

Madison missed several tackles and blitzed right by a 20 yard Chicago gain. He just might be too old to learn new tricks.

Howard just plain got burned several times.

On a side note, I was impressed with Yeremiah Bell. He looks fast and strong out there.

I'm pretty worried about the secondary as a whole. I wish Poole wouldn't have gotten hurt.

Another side note: Please cut Donald Lee.

I've been a Howard guy all along, but he really stunk up the joint Saturday. I think the CBs as a group are still having to think about where they are supposed to be and that is causing the problems we saw. The scheme is completely different than last year for them...But...they really looked like quite a weakness to me out there Saturday...every one of the CBs we put on the field...

I agree that Bell looked good too, Jones struggled a little. Tillman had a decent night, especially after looking at the game a second time.

Side note agreed with here !!!
