Who will we cut?

I don't want to release David Bowens.

I see our D-line like this:

Starters:
DE: Jason Taylor
DT: Keith Traylor
DT: Kevin Carter
DE: Vonnie Holliday

Now, we need a full compliment behind them to keep them fresh. To rotate in and out of games.

That could be:

DE: Matt Roth
DT:Larry Chester
DT: Dario Romero
DE: IF WE CUT DAVID BOWENS, THEN WHO???

We need that 4th pass rushing DE. I don't like all this talk about cutting David Bowens.

I dont like thompson for 1 fact that he is way over paid!
Isnt he the most paid receiver on our team? not good for a 4th receiver!
We should just use josh davis as the 4th receiver! or wes!!!!!!!!!! we all know what he can do after the catch!!

No, Chambers is, Thompson took a pay cut last year...

well, he gets paid more than boston! unless he gets a reduction to the vet min w/ incentatives i see know need in keeping him! he comes up with the catch we need at times but he never lived up to 2nd receiver hype! with all the receivers about to be cut y not go after someone there? time will tell!!!1

The only reason I think that it would be in our best interest to release David Bowens would be because of his $1,900,000 base salary. I agree that by releasing David Bowens, that it could be a bad move. There's one guy that I have my eye on though, that I feel could be able to contribute. Since pre-season last year, I've had my eye on Ronald Flemons and think he would be good candidate to replace David Bowens if we end up releasing him. He's 6'5" 265lbs (put 20lbs of muscle on since college), I think with that added size and strength he could be a good 4th pass rushing DE for us. I'm not sure about the exact figures on his salary, but he must be pretty cheap close to the MIN. I feel he would be good for us in the 4-3 base defense, and I don't think that he should be considered to play in the 3-4 (whenever we do use it) whatsoever. He had an excellent preseason last year, but I wasn't too suprised to see him not make the final cut due to roster space. If we do end up getting rid of David Bowens, I think Ronald Flemons would be a suitable replacement.

Yeah, I had Flemons in the back of my mind, but I don't think he has the quick first step that David Bowens has, does he?

I realize that cutting Bowens would be a money decision, but it's not like he's going to make 8 million or something.

David will stay because he is like matt roth and jason taylor going to be in that 4-3 to 3-4 scheme that looks like this->

DE taylor, Roth
DT carter
DT traylor
DE holliday, Bowens

hell,
DE taylor
DT carter
DT traylor, chester
DT holliday
DE roth, bowens

nice D

I'm almost positive that Derrius Thompson restructured with us last year and took a paycut. As of right now his salary $550,000 (according to FinHeaven and NFLPA) which isn't bad at all. It also says he has a Amortized Bonus of $570,500. Also the Cap hit for Thompson (which is how much it will cost if we release him), is $1,107,500. So if we're going to release him we might very well end up have to pay him 1 million dollars to do so. I figure it would just seem more practical to keep him at his current salary and end up keeping him as the 4th WR. These are the salaries of our WR's as of now:

Chris Chambers:
Base Salary: $1,350,000
Amortized Bonuses: $1,916,666
Other Bonuses: $0
Cap Hit:$3,266,666

Marty Booker:
Base Salary: $2,900,000
Amortized Bonuses: $0
Other Bonuses: $0
Cap Hit: $2,900,000

David Boston:
Base Salary: $540,000
Amortized Bonuses: ? (Can't find)
Other Bonuses: ? (See above)
Cap Hit: ? (See above the above)

Derrius Thompson:
Base Salary: $550,000
Amortized Bonuses: $557,500
Other Bonuses: $0
Cap Hit:$1,107,500

Wes Welker:
Base Salary:$305,000
Amortized Bonuses: $0
Other Bonuses: $0
Cap Hit: $0

Kendall Newson:
Base Salary: $305,000
Amortized Bonuses: $0
Other Bonuses: $0
Cap Hit: $0

Boston is a special case because the reason why his salary is so low is becuase he didn't play a single game for us last year and we're just giving him a one year "test-run" so to speak and gave him a LOAD of incentives. So if he performs exceptionally well, there's no telling how much he'll be making. So when it's all said and done, Boston could end up getting paid a lot more than Thompson. I am almost absolutely positive that the VET MIN is only $540,000. So it's almost like we're very close to paying him the Vet MIN now as it is. I'm not exactly sure if or what our incentives are with Thompson though. I agree that he never lived up to the 2nd Wide Reciever hype, but he showed signs of improvement towards the end of the season last year as the 3rd WR and I really feel he would be a good fit and good 4th WR for us. And as for the 5th WR, it's going to be between: Bryan Gilmore, Josh Davis, and Kendall Newson with Wes Welker most likely to be the 6th.

thank you for the post because i shouldof done my research before i spoke! i apoligize! he has shown sins of improvement i know that but i dont know i like him then i dont thank you tho for your post!

Some possibilities are, Larry Chester, David Bowens, Lamar Gordon, Travis Minor and Timbo. Those are probaly the only "big name" players you will see gone.
Gordon:roflmao: No way that happens!!

i agree keep gordon, we gave up a 3rd rounder for him..

he makes a great utility guy... he and harris..

minor? later..

I wouldn't say that he has the first step that David Bowens has, but I wouldn't consider him a "significant" downgrade. He had a terrible 40 time with 4.89, which explains why he all the way in the 7th round to Atlanta. He had an impressive performance in pre-season of last year with us and impressed our coaching staff I remember hearing. (Not quite sure if that says much). He had 4 or 5 sacks with two forced fumbles. But I think he would be a surprise player to look out for, I've had my eye on him. I don't expect anything spectacular, but he's the kind of guy I can see come up and be servicable for a few plays a game.

Three-year starter at defensive end who had a strong senior season, more than tripling his tackle total from a year ago … uses his long arms to ward off blockers … veteran player lends valuable experience to Texas A&M’s Wrecking Crew defense … has made 30 career starts at defensive end.
Here's the link to his biography. http://www.aggieathletics.com/sports/football/history/2000/bios/flemons.html

Here's a quote that I found from last season:
OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

The development of defensive lineman Ronald Flemons has brought praise from Coach Dave Wannstedt. Flemons has reached the quarterback several times in one-on-one pass-rush drills. However, Flemons knows he has to improve his hands and footwork to earn a roster spot. A seventh-round draft pick of the Atlanta Falcons in 2001, he was waived by the team after training camp of 2003. The former Texas A&M Aggie has played in just five NFL games during a three-year career.
Also read,
Tall, long-armed lineman who learned the rigors of NFL during rookie season from veterans like Patrick Kerney, Brady Smith, Travis Hall and Shane Dronett.

If we do end up keeping Flemons, he would most likely be the 3rd RDE. Last year spent most of the season on our Practice Squad, but I really do think he could make a servicable spot-duty player.
