Identical to last year, I only did this at our original positions, ignoring the trades. I did it in real time, not caring where the player eventually ended up. This is what I came up with:
19: Johnny Manziel, with emphasis
50: Louis Nix. He went a full round later. I think that's a mistake by the league. Mostly I was shocked at the drop off once it reached this pick. I wasn't thrilled by anyone, compared to an avalanche of riches merely ten picks earlier. Some receivers were tempting but I wasn't convinced they were ultra special. I considered Christian Kirksey and Kareem Martin but gambled that at least one of them would be available a round later.
81: Kareem Martin. This one was very easy. I don't care that the defensive line is receiving priority over the offensive line. That's the way the board is falling. Talent rules. I'm sick to miss out on Kirksey, but not as depressed as missing all those guys who went early in round two, like Lee, Van Noy, Hageman, Matthews and Kouandjio
116: David Yankey. I decided the offensive line needed some work. This was a tough call above Cameron Fleming, Yankey's teammate. I'm going to default to the guy who is tougher and a superior run blocker, with confidence that his pass block ability will catch up. Yankey is also younger than Fleming and has been considered the superior player for the majority of their careers. I love Stanford players and am not going to be scared away by the Jonathan Martin example.
155: Jared Abbrederis. This was a big gamble because I didn't want to miss out on Ben Gardner, one of my top targets. A night earlier I thought I'd pick Gardner in the 5th but the more I thought about it, he was likely to make it to our number in the 6th. Turns out he went to Dallas in the late 7th. I also considered Caraun Reid at this spot but I already took Nix at defensive tackle. Same with Anthony Johnson, who we signed as a free agent. Abbrederis was one of the major college guys I considered quite underrated in a very deep group of wide receivers. I like the big school kids above guesswork on small college guys. Abbrederis went to Green Bay later in the fifth round
190: Ben Gardner and call it a day. I was ecstatic he dropped to this spot. I immediately switched to coverage of the Players Championship on NBC and didn't watch the remainder of the draft until hours later.
234: I wasn't watching the draft in real time but once the tape arrived at our original spot at 234 in the 7th round I would have selected Seantrel Henderson. He went to the Bills a few picks later. Blake Annen was the other consideration, a fast tight end from Cincinnati. Henderson was rated extremely high at a young age. I invariably default to that angle. I would have made Annen a priority free agent and upped the ante. He signed with the Eagles.
Overall I'm convinced I added more talent than Hickey did. Obviously it's an entirely different dynamic, with Manziel in the mix. The two offensive linemen may be drafted lower than James and Turner but over the bulk of their careers Henderson and Yankey were rated higher. Henderson is not ready to step in immediately, while James is. I understand that aspect. Once you have Manziel the offensive line isn't a dire emergency because he can actually avoid rushers.
