Why Albert over Veldheer?

I'm confused about why we didn't go after Monroe... Should have at least played Monroe against Albert to try to get him to come down on price.

This was 1 position that was absolutely needed. If you play one against the other, you risk losing both. With the issues the OL dealt with this past year, I am guessing that Philbin wanted some leadership and set his sights on Albert. He made it clear that Albert was his guy. If they swung and missed here, it could have gotten really ugly.

Both received 5 year deals. Veldheer got 35 million and 17 guaranteed. Albert got 46 million and 25 guaranteed. Veldheer is 3 years younger, and doesn't have a potential serious back injury. It just doesn't make sense to me at all. Albert may be a better player in 2014, but for the duration of the contract Veldheer will be the better player. I'm not necessarily knocking the Albert signing, he was a pro bowl tackle who is really good in pass pro. And definitely makes Miami a better football team. I just don't see the rationale of paying someone more who is older and has more injury concerns, when they are pretty evenly matched. Anyone have a reason that make sense?

How does Albert have more injury concerns? Veldheer missed 11 or 12 games last year along. Albert has missed only 11 in his whole career. His back injury was in 2012 and did not affect him last year.

For Comparison here are the contracts given to Albert, Monroe, Saffold, and Veldheer

Albert= 5 year/ 46 million. 25 million guaranteed

Monroe= 5 year/ 37.5 million. 19 million guaranteed

Saffold= 5 year/ 42.5 million. 21 million guaranteed

Veldheer= 5 year/ 35 million. 17 million guaranteed

Monroe's and Veldheer's deals were fantastic. The best 2 signings so far besides Denver stealing TJ Ward for 4 year/23 million.

What's the first year cap hit on those guys? Albert's is $4.225 million.

:idk: At least we made a move and got our man. There would be so much more bitching if we had missed out all together on any of the LT's that were available today.

How does each deal break down each year? If Albert is who the Fins wanted then our deal was fantastic.

I'm curious as to why people are so high on Veldheer? He played like crap last year, although he was limited by injury, and even before injury he was average. There is more risk in signing Veldheer imo. Albert has put together multiple good years vs Veldheer's 1 decent year. If I'm spending that much money, I'm going with the sure thing.

Triceps injury is nowhere near as serious as a back injury. Players have played with a torn triceps.. Justin Smith, and Ray Lewis did it in 2012.

I'm not sure how each contract is split up. I did read that Miami would be frontloading Albert's deal. I'm not bitching or complaining about the Albert signing. Bottom line is we filled our biggest need with a pro bowler. I feel like I am asking a legitimate question. I'm just trying to understand the rationale.

the back injury was in 2012 and he played all 2013 except for the last 4 games with a knee sprain so this serious back issue cant be that serious.

Don't speak your mind...this was a pro-Monroe board a week ago when we realized there was a good chance he'd reach FA. But people tend to sell themselves on new additions once they happen, I've done it before.

...People will say he had the triceps injury, but tell me this if player X is a 26 year old who had a torn triceps and player Y is a 30 year old with a bad back, who are you more worried about?..

So, its somewhat like Culpepper v Brees? How did that work out for the phins?

Right on man. I see a younger guy with more upside as a run blocker and is an elite pass blocker. He's younger and a better athlete. So ya, it doesn't make much sense to me at all, he was my first choice. I think it's a joke, but I also see a solid pass protector in Albert and that's what we needed, just don't agree with how we went about it.

Good points......FYI.....Albert is 29, he will turn 30 in Nov. So he is young enough IMHO.

we wanted him last year...we could have given up a pick for him now we get him without doing so...i like the fact that at least hickey/phiblin agree on a guy and went with him. the fact they picked him over velhdeer shows their conviction since wanting him from last year. i bet they are happy.
