Why Albert over Veldheer?

I'm curious as to why people are so high on Veldheer? He played like crap last year, although he was limited by injury, and even before injury he was average. There is more risk in signing Veldheer imo. Albert has put together multiple good years vs Veldheer's 1 decent year. If I'm spending that much money, I'm going with the sure thing.

Both received 5 year deals. Veldheer got 35 million and 17 guaranteed. Albert got 46 million and 25 guaranteed. Veldheer is 3 years younger, and doesn't have a potential serious back injury. It just doesn't make sense to me at all. Albert may be a better player in 2014, but for the duration of the contract Veldheer will be the better player. I'm not necessarily knocking the Albert signing, he was a pro bowl tackle who is really good in pass pro. And definitely makes Miami a better football team. I just don't see the rationale of paying someone more who is older and has more injury concerns, when they are pretty evenly matched. Anyone have a reason that make sense?

What makes you think we know the answer to that?

Offensive line coach was his coach in KC. Familiarity....knowing Brandon well.

Albert is better. My best guess.

The question I haven't seen anyone ask is which player is a better fit for Philbin's "system"?

It's been said that Joe has been pursuing Albert for some time now, so I believe that's your answer.

Albert wanted to be here. We needed Albert to be here.

Do you take the sure thing pretty girl sitting next to you at the bar home or throw your hat into the circle of guys surrounding the beautiful girl at the other end of the club?

Why Albert over the other guys? Because Philbin wanted him. He wanted him last year and Ireland gave him Dion Jordan instead. This year Hickey is giving Philbin what he wants. At the end of the year, if Philbin misses the playoffs. Hickey can fire Philbin and put his own people in.

I would take Albert any day over big V. I would also take Monroe any day over Albert.
It takes two to tango and maybe Monroe wasn't interested in us. We liked Albert last year so for better or worse he is ours.
Saffold Or V would not have been better signings. Monroe has always been the better LT that's why he started over Albert there in college.
Still a pro bowler with versatility, feel better about this signing than Wallace.

this thread is dumb. You have no idea if we tried to get Veldheer, if he turned us down, or any other details. I hate people complaining about 'oh we should have signed this guy instead.' For the millionth time.....THIS IS NOT MADDEN!!!!

I think people do get caught up in that. I know I wonder why we didn't land Player A or Player B, but we don't know whether the FO had any interest in either player or if the players had any interest in them. I try not to get too caught up in it because alas, I have zero say in any of it.

Why? HE's a very good left tackle and he wanted to be here....

What I don't understand is how some people are completely ignoring one players injury(Veldheer's torn tricep) yet constantly rehashing anothers(Alberts's back)?

No one here is in a position to say that one is medically more serious than another. First of all having a "bad Back" is a completely meaningless diagnosis. What does that mean? Spinal stenosis? Facet Arthopathy? DJD? A muscle issue?
If it is a muscle issue... Well don't we have the top trainer in the NFL?

Ray Lewis tore his tricep at the end of his career when he was likely using PED's to keep himself artificially strong.
A tricep is not nearly as important for a Linebacker than it is for an O-linemen whose entire job is to push and grab. Seeing as the tricep is the primary motor unit for forearm arm extension, how do you propose someone does that?
Yes it will likely heal, but getting this injury as a 27 y/o is more concerning IMO than 35 y/o Ray Lewis.
