Why Are Out Of Towners Still Dolphans?

We have one of these threads every summer and I always enjoy them. Sorry if I am repeating my story. I grew up in the 1970s in Indiana, pre-Colts. There were quite a few Bears fans around, but the high profile national teams were really the Cowboys, Dolphins, Steelers, and Raiders in my formative years. Vikings to some extent. Those teams had fans at my school and I keep up with my close classmates to this day and they are still strong fans of those original teams to this day. I loved Larry Csonka even if I was too young to really understand the sport.

Back then, you would see school children in Indiana wearing Dolphin knit hats at the time. It was a national brand. NBC used to cover the AFC and the Dolphins would be one of their premiere brands to draw some of their best national ratings.

The Dolphins have been more of a problem than a benefit the past 20 years. But I will say this, it's essentially like a family member. You can't turn your back on them. Sadly, they are a business and a guy like Steven Ross would count on fans thinking like that. We can sit here and count many reasons why it is more logical for me to like any of a number of other teams (I live in Chicago), but the bottom line is I am on a message board talking about the franchise in July ('nuf said.).

I saw Dan&the Dolphins against Buffalo, during the 1990 playoffs (at Buffalo, snow game, our Olivadotti D as usual.... ) and I fell in love with Marino (that was my first football game and even I could tell the freaking difference in talent between the 2 teams) ... magic moment, for me, when Marino ran (!!!) for a TD after a playfake... we lost, of course... but I was totally hooked and so the Dolphins were my team, for ever (how could you change team!)....

I was born and raised in Miami. The Dolphins are my passion and are my escape during tough times. I've been in Atlanta now for 16 years and my roots are still in Miami. I'm able to get to Dolphin games 3 times per year. Love my Phins.

I don't even know how the south Florida natives still torture themselves with the Miami Dolphins, much less out-of-towners.

I'm not sure what exactly they're loyal to. The logo? Hell, they changed that to something entirely ridiculous. For the old timers, the Dolphins in their current state don't even represent anything close to what they once stood for. This organization just gives them one disaster after another... after another. Both on the field and off of it. Owners, front office executives, coaches, and players. They're all culpable over and over again. If one's not screwing up, the other is.

What was once one of the best run organizations in sports has inexplicably became one of the worst run organizations in sports. Any sport. It's a little bit hard to believe to be honest... the equivalent of a Mike Tyson type demise. From heavyweight champ to public spectacle.

Bad stadium, weak atmosphere, clueless owners, embarrassing front office executives, poor coaches, liabilities as players, and terrible uniforms. It pretty much sums up what these loyal fans are dealing with. The only thing that changes is which combination of these albatrosses move to the forefront from year to year. I certainly hope it changes for the old timers that have suffered the longest.

When I was a kid my father liked the Vikings. I wanted to like any team but them. I picked the Fins to be honest because of the helmets. The Dolphin logo. Hey I was 6. When I started to watch them they won most of their games. I really began to like Larry and Morris. I'm almost 50 now. Fin-For-Life!

This Q from the OP is a bit offensive to us 'out of towners'. It suggests that you're not a true fan of the team and can come n go as you please. Well any fan that switches teams for whatever reason, was never a true fan to begin with, because fans don't switch teams, bandwagoneers switch teams.

Grew up in the Tampa Bay area....Dolphin fanatic since 1970.

They were Florida's only team then so most of us that weren't transplants were Dolphin fans.

Had posters of Csonka and Griese on my wall as a kid...oh and watched them dominate the early 70's and go undefeated.

They will always be my team.

I'm a local and gonna stick with all Miami teams for life, even the Marlins. However, there are many Out of Town fans who have stuck with the Phins through many years of disappointment, when It would be so easy to change to a different team.

Why?
I have always been an out of towner...different country. We have no pro football team where I live so Marino got me started and I am loyal to a fault, so I guess I'm stuck.

Its funny...I see it differently....I as an old timer got to see greatness from the team...I feel sorry for the 30 somethings and below who have never known this team as a real winner.

I must say though...after 25 years of Shula...the past couple of decades have been hard to swallow.

JJ who wanted to fish more than coach...Wanntedt (no words neccesary,).....Jay Fiedler, Nick Saban, passing on one hall of fame QB after another, Cam Cam, Ted Ginn's family, Tuna who didn't really want to do it....bulleygate....on and on.

I just hope I see another championship before I die or before the pussification of American turns the NFL into flag football.

Bro I live in New England and have been a phins fan since they lost the super bowl to Dallas.
I hate the Patriots with a passion....True fans stick it out with their teams

As i have said before since their first snap of the ball i have been a dolphin fan.And will die being a dolphin fan.Whether they go 16-0 or 0-16.

I actually became a Dolphins fan while living in Mexico City.

Can't remember the game as I was young, but it was a fairly important game in the early 90's.

Dolphins vs Cowboys.

My father and brother had been Cowboys fans for some time and me being a annoying 5 year old decided to cheer against the Cowboys just to poke fun. Dan Marino was the QB and I really liked the number 13.

Moved to Miami when I was 10 (must of been weird conincidence or something?!) and been here ever since.

I was born and raised in Miami. I am in SC now.
I bought a giant digital (analog) satellite when I moved here so I could watch the Dolphin games. I now have DirectV.
When I lived in Miami I witnessed some of the most exciting football ever played. Watching Danny boy come in a and tear it up made me even more of a fan.
I love the Dolphins.
They have been my Sunday fun (as long as they win) for as long as I can remember.

i love the fins, I've been a fan since '82. i started watching the NFL in '79 and was a cowboys fan because they were the most popular but i really didn't know what football was. I remember in '82 when they played in the orange bowl and watching the way they played and the atmosphere in the stadium and then the year after Marino started i was hooked. been a die hard Fin fan ever since. through thick and thin man... always will be a fin fan i bleed Aqua and orange...
