Why Are Out Of Towners Still Dolphans?

I'll bet a lot of out of state members are here because of Dan.

Two words, Dan. Marino. Like many, I also never switch teams. But that doesn't mean I have rose colored glasses. I disagree with more things this organization does than I agree with.

The same thing could be asked about in-towners! You all could easily root for any other team.
Many locals throughout the country have out of state favorites. I grew up in Miami and remained
a fan long after I left to travel the world. It was a great way to stay connected with my father, who
was also a fan. He has since moved to Colorado and has been rooting for Denver but I remain loyal to
the team through thick or thin. Winners or losers, they are my winners or losers.

Even if one day a team did come to my state Id still be a Dolphins fan. Plus it gives me an excuse to visit Florida.

Because my mama said so :) She grew up in Hialeah and I was born in Miami. When I was five she told me "I don't care who you root for in any other sport, but for football, you're a Dolphins fan." Although I grew up a Navy brat and moved around quite a bit, I've always rooted for the Dolphins, and always will.

never got into soccer over here in UK (spent more time on here than watching the world cup) - watched Dolphins on Channel 4 over here and it was the Marino factor - once you choose a team its yours for life. There was also the Miami element, always wanted to g there, grew up listening to Miami Sound Machine as a kid in the 80s (dont bash me for it as i was only young :)). I am now 40 and have South Beach as my phone backdrop, when we came to Orlando recently i had to hop in a hire car and drove down to South Beach just to say i had been there, looking at running Miami marathon soon, i suppose i have it bad, would drop everything over here to come live over there but have wife and kids who i can't persuade. Still proudly walk round the UK with my Marino or Tannehill jerseys - the least said about the Cullpepper one i bought the better!

Because proper fans stick with a team through good and bad. Not just gloryears. That should go without saying.

I despise bandwagon fans in all sports

For me, I simply can't fathom watching the NFL without being a Dolphin fan. I've only been to 2 games (at Indy many years ago and Baltimore last year), but if I stopped watching the Phins I would stop watching football altogether.

I used to play a LOT of fantasy football. I was introduced to fantasy by a friend in which we partnered and bought a team in a 12 team league about 15 years ago. It was in a backroom cramped with 25 guys smoking, drinking and calling out their picks. I think we paid about $250/team back then. I've also hosted a few very involved drafts; cookout, converted the garage into a war room with draft board and player tags with about 12 guys in attendance. Fantasy football taught me to watch every game college and pro. I still know where a large number of current players went to college.

I watched every game. Including the Dolphins. As I stopped playing fantasy, I realized if I didn't watch the Phins I wasn't interested in watching the NFL. I've been a fan since Marino was drafted, I was a Cowboy fan as a child. Once I switched, I've never watched anyone else with any passion.

I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when Marino fake spiked the Jets. I remember Chris Chambers concussion and most of the Denver game. Orande Gadsden's miracle stretch catch. Lamar Smith's 200+ playoff game against the Colts. Screaming at the TV every time Ricky touched the ball "Run Ricky Run!". Fiedler's game winning goal line scramble. Our 62-7 playoff loss to the Jags. Marino's Super Bowl loss to Montana and the Diet Pepsi commercial. The Thanksgiving Day snow game.

So much to "forget", so much remembered: Players, games, coaches, owners, debacles and glory. After a while, you realize if you stop watching your team... there is really no reason to watch any other. For me, being a fan has become about loyalty and a small timeline within my own life. Not rooting for the Phins is akin to forgetting part of my life.

I'm from Charlotte, NC. I'm pretty sure, when my mother gave birth to me, I came into the world sporting Dolphins gear. No one in my family was a Dolphins fan (they are now - since I influenced them into with my fanatical ways) at the time. I was lucky enough to have witnessed Griese and the Zonk play. Lucky to have watched Marino from the beginning. These have been tough times to say the least, but my loyalty hasn't wavered in the least. I've had people, for years now, ask me why I'm not a Panthers fan. (I lived about 20 minutes from Panthers' Stadium). To me that's just nonsense. I can't imagine how anyone could dump a team that they've rooted for all of their lives just because their hometown got a team. There is no question that my loyalty to the Dolphins will never end. I couldn't even imagine rooting for anyone else.

Some really good stories guys. Being born in Miami it was easy to be a fan. Flipper got me interested as a child. The two SB wins and the undefeated season just cemented my life time love affair with this team. It's almost like a marriage with fantastic early years and rocky periods like we are in now.
No matter i'm all in on this team.:brewskis:

I'm 38 and from Mobile, Alabama, I've been a Phins fan since 84, I saw Marino play in the Super Bowl against the Niners, I've been a Dolphins fan since, and it's never gonna change. Every year when Marino was QB, I would say the Dolphins were going to the Super Bowl, Marino gave you that hope.

Grew up in Southern California, but otherwise This is also my story. I was young while watching that game, but even then I remember most people expecting Marino and the Fins to be back to the SB soon. I became a fan because my team was always in the mix. I would like to see that again soon. I fully expect the see Aqua and Coral in the playoffs this year.

I thought the real dolphin was a myth lol that would be awesome we shod get another

A person that switches teams because of losing has zero loyalty and is not even a true fan in the first place. I am from NY and have been a die hard dolphins fan my entire life. I will root for this team til the day I die, even if I die from misery by the hands of the Miami Dolphins. That's the way it should be if you are a fan of a team, regardless if you live in the same state or not!!
