Why Are Out Of Towners Still Dolphans?

I thought the real dolphin was a myth lol that would be awesome we shod get another

The first few years there actually was a dolphin that would jump when the Fins scored.
His name was Flipper and he resided at the Miami Seaquarium. Even had a TV show by the same name.
The team was bad and flipper was the main attraction to get younger fans in the seats.
He was gone by the time Shula arrived.

I don't want to be offensive, but how old are you Southbeach? I see you posting a lot on this site and making some great points, but this just sounds like a question a child would ask.

This. He has some great posts, but a lot of posts have me scratching my head. For the most part, they do end up encouraging pretty good discussions.

I was raised in Orlando, before the Jaguars even existed, and when the Bucs were consistently horrible and wore the creamsicle unis. I was in love with them from the start (81-82, just pre-Marino), when i was just a pre-teen just beginning to truly care about football. No matter where I am (or how bad we are), I'll always rep the Dolphins to the fullest!

Try being a Dolphins & Atlanta Braves fan. A sense of humor is not just required but mandatory.

Quoted for accuracy.

What a great question. My first memory is the AFC Championship in early 1993. No idea why but I was cheering for the Dolphins that day and for whatever reason it just stuck. Have been a loyal Sunday Ticket customer since 98 and have been to 8 games (2 in MN) since 2000.

Growing up with the team they just became a part of me. For better or for worse the people in and around my life associate the Dolphins with me and vice versa. Again, not sure if I am proud of that but it is the truth. I couldn't cheer for another team even if I wanted to. At this point it is an addiction.

From 1966 to 1968, and in the 1970s a live dolphin was situated in a water tank in the open (east) end of the Orange Bowl. He would jump in the tank to celebrate touchdowns and field goals. The tank that was set up in the 1970s was manufactured by Evan Bush and maintained during the games by Evan Bush and Dene Whitaker. Flipper was removed from the Orange Bowl after 1968 to save costs and the 1970s due to stress

Speaking of Shula fish how things have changed...

Under the leadership of Hall of Fame head coach Don Shula, the Miami Dolphins enjoyed a winning record in the Orange Bowl against rival teams in the AFC Eastern Division. Under Shula, the Dolphins were an impressive 57–9–1 (60–10–1 including playoff contests) against the Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts (15–3), the Boston/New England Patriots (15–1), the Buffalo Bills (16–1) and the New York Jets (13–4–1).

I think it's a valid question. What does his age have to do with it?

Must be nice to have been alive during that success :)

My father lived down there and loved the fins so I was doomed when the day they cut my umbilical cord. He moved to Jersey after he was in the Airforce and we have been here ever since.

Agreed. Truth be told, the Packers are the only other team I could be considered a fan of.

The other 30 nauseate me in varying degrees especially the one in western PA.
When I was picking a team it came down to either the packers or fins

For some reason I pocked soprano and henne *sigh*

I was 5 years old in 1992, and my first memories of Dolphins games were going with my dad to bbqs in Tallahassee, FL. He grew up in Miami his whole life. Watching the best QB ever to play the game, Dan The Man....and never seeing him get his ring left a bad taste in my mouth. I moved to Idaho in 99, and Marino retired....shockingly....my love for the Dolphins got even stronger with distance. Now I live in Hawaii...and its as strong as its ever been. I think its because the Dolphins are an attachment to "Home" to me...and the memories are great - even if we were losing. Ive been patiently waiting for us to get back to greatness....

Why You Ask?

I have been a Dolphins Fan since I was four. I live in N.E. Pa. I've seen a few Phins games in my neck of the woods. Including Shula's 325th victory vs. the Eagles. I am a Homer/Die Hard. I couldn't imaging living in South Beach area and being able to listen to the Radio without the NE Jets/ Bills ESPN Bias. Both my sons are Phin Fans. I will be a die hard Phan till the Day I meet my maker.

Here's my story: I'm borne and raise in Mexico and contrary to what most people think we have been watching and playing American Football for more than 50 years. At the late sixties for some reason the games that were in TV always had the Cowboys; so, many of the people over 50 years cheer for Dallas, and, as expected my father dose like the Cowboys. When I was around five or six years old at the mid seventies, my father decide it was time to introduce my brother and I to the NFL. He went to a store to pick up a couple of Cowboys units (helmets, shoulders and uniform) fortunately they didn't have them, so been the 70's they have Steelers and Dolphins kits. He got one of each, wrap them up and place a tag on it randomly, one for each kid, of course I got the Dolphins and my brother the Steelers; I remember not knowing what the hell it was, and asking my father docens of times what the sport was call and the name of the team I got. Since then I became a die hard fan as my brother did for the Steelers, so I was very close to became a Cowboy or a Pittsburg fan.

I have seen both of them win Super Bowls but I'm very proud of my Dolphins and didn't want it any other way, I guess i have to say that THE TEAM CHOOSE ME and I'm glad it did. I watch every game (sunday ticket) and been fortunate enough to watch them play few times live, in NY, Houston, in Miami 4 or 5 times (last year vs. Ravens) and even in Mexico City in preseason against the Broncos. My father till this day still says it was a mistake to buy those uniforms, as he alway want his kids cheering for his team.

I been following this team for almost 40 years, when I cherish every games or news I could get, it's not even posible to change now, not even if I want it (I sure don't). If for some reason my head told me to change teams, my heart won't let me, is something it can't be done rationally; If you could, you are not a fan, you are a supporter, a follower or something like that, but not a fan.

P.S. Of course I got my son a Dolphins unit as soon as I could, He is a fan now.
