Why can't we contend this year??

I ve been saying that all along but people think we are the laughing stock of the NFL

It bothered me a little too, but now I hope it continues until the season starts. I like the element of surprise.
Picture this, the Broncos come in here saying all the right things i.e. the Dolphins have some talent and it will be a tough game etc. etc. But deep down inside they will be thinking that they are playing one of the NFL doormat teams. They will come in over confident, thinking of an easy victory (sort of like the Dolphins against the Texans 2 yrs ago). Then the game begins and Miami's defense, with all the different looks, starts to get to Plummer (IMO nothing special). By the 4th quarter the 100+ degree heat and humidity start to wilt the Broncos players and Miami starts to pound the ball inside.
I predict a convincing win on opening day and the rest of the NFL starts to take notice.

this team will be better than last year but I don't see it contending. I don't see a team with Gus Ferrote and AJ Feeley as their top quarterbacks going to the playoffs let alone deep in the playoffs.

I think Houck is a better o-line coach, but coaching can only do so much. Im not sure the talent we have on the o-line is good enough to turn things around and give us a respectable o-line.

The defense is old in key areas and in other areas very very very young. I think the defense will be shakey at best this year and just average.

This is an 8-8 type of team. But if it went 9-7 or 6-10 I wouldn't be shocked either. The AFC is deep and I don't see this as a playoff team.

It's a process. It will take 2-3 years under Saban. This is the year where Saban finds out who is with him and who isn't. He will test guys each day of the week to see who he wants on this team to go forward with and who is the dead weight to cut loose. To a certain extent you could say Winning and Losing is secondary this year.

Sounds like you are a member of the reality-based community.

Too much in the way of staff changes / schemes, etc. I don't think it's *impossible*, but 10-6 would require a lot of lucky breaks in addition to the schemes and players gelling. I do note that we need look no further than 2004 Buff as an example of a team doing a one year turn around, so 9-7 isn't just an outrageous wet dream (and you Buff fans calling Phin fans "homers" for thinking such things are either memory challenged, disingenuous, or both). 7-9, 8-8, without any more info than we have now, is more realistic. We'll see how it goes and know more pretty shortly. We *should* get better as the season rolls along.

It is very rare that a team has fewer than 6 wins, changes nearly the entire coaching staff including head coach, changes both offensive and defensive systems, then comes back to contend for the playoffs the following year.

It takes time.
Hope for the best, but dont be surprised if we end up around .500

I pretty much agree, except for a couple of things. First, all the Charger fans I talked to last year pretty much thought their offensive line sucked and lacked talent coming into last season also, and they pretty much threw in the towel when they signed Roman Oben.. but, they ended up with one of the best offensive lines in football. Also, I thing JT, Zach, and a few others are getting older, but I think with this defensive scheme, they can use their intelligence (gained via their experience) to make up for what they might be losing elsewhere... This defense is going to be a bigger surprise than people think. Coaching can account for and make up for alot. IE. the patriots and their ability to constantly plug in secondary player after player for injured starters the past two season... lastly, I say closer to two years than three, Meaning starting Nicks THIRD season as coach... I think after we go through another 2 free agency periods and 2 drafts, the start of the third season, which to me is 2 years of complete NFL season for Nick will be the point where we are ready to compete for an AFC Crown.. I say 8-8 this season and that we're right in the wild card chase up until the last week or two of the season.. then 10-6 and a wild card next season, with a good shot at 12-13 wins going into the 3rd season with Nick as coach.

we are going to contend.

we are going to go 11-5 and get the 5th wild card spot.
(prediction was 10-6 before ricky).

i've been saying we will contend for the superbowl this year all along 12-4!!!!!!!!! go fins!!!!!!!! great read.

Funny how when a Dolphin player gets to be around 30-32, they are old, but nobody says the same thing about the Pats. McGinest, Vrabel, Ted Johnson, Poole, Harrison aren't exactly in the prime of their careers either.
However, the media continues to suck up to BB and the Pats. BB farts and it's Beethoven

My sentiments exactly. I haven't noticed anything in Madison's, JT's, or Zach's play that would indicate even a nominal decline in their level of play. And I wish people would get off of BB's nuts.

I believe we can contend this year. We barely lost a lot of games last year. That was with no running game, no OL, the play calling was horrible, need I go on. I think we can contend.

I'm sitting here at 1:00 AM Saturday morning and just had a crazy thought; Why can't we contend this year? I'm a huge fin fan, but have always been a realist. Look down our roster and tell me why we are only an average team.

Offense-

QB is obviously the big question mark for our team, but I think we can all agree we will get much better play than last year. The system will be better (anything is better than the "system" we supposedly had last year created by our supposed OC), and the line will give our QB more time. The line was solid towards the end of last year, but I expect Houck to improve our line a lot.

That may be optimistic thinking, but I think it's fairly reasonable to expect solid if unspectacular play from those 2 parts of the offense. After that what's not to like? We have a group of guys to throw to that is pretty damn good. We've got Chambers, Boston, Booker, McMike, and Ronnie Brown out of the backfield. Those are top notch targets in the passing game. Out of the backfield we have Brown, Gordon, and Ricky. If we can find a way to get ricky and Ronnie in the same backfield imagine the matchup problems on defense. Between the receivers and the backfield, that's a lot of ammunition. The offense should be more explosive than we've seen since Shula left.

On defense we have had some changes. Along the front 7 we've got a lot of flexibility. We will be using the 3-4 at times, as well as the 4-3 as our base. Gone are the days of "We'll put our 11 guys out there and beat us if you can." Not to criticize Bates, but we played a very vanilla defense. Saban is a defensive genius and for the first time in a long time we will add the element of surprise to our arsenal. My biggest worry about defense is our secondary. We lost Surtain, who IMO is the best CB in football, as well as our safeties. While the talent in the secondary besides Madison is unproven at best, I'm comforted by the way the Pats seemingly "schemed" their way out of a secondary nightmare. Injury after injury, yet still they kept teams from beating them in the air. They made Manning look horrible against a depleted secondary.

A variable that a lot of people discount is the loss of Wanny. I have honestly never seen a worse coach in my life. He watched JJ steamroll opponents at UM and Dallas by playing boring fundamental football and he got the hairbrained idea that it would work everywhere. Guess what?? You have to be a far more talented team than your opponents to line up and run up the gut 6 out of 10 times with the same running plays. It worked at UM and Dallas because those teams were far superior. JJ failed here, and so did Wanny because their "philosophy" is dependent on far superior talent. In the FA era, the teams are too closely matched to depend on a huge talent advantage. For the first time in a long time we will have a coach that will scheme against opponents. You guys notice how when Belicheck was the Jets OC, and even with the Pats, he would always find the weak link on our defense. We put out the best secondary in the NFL, but who was getting picked on?? It was the Jerry Wilson's and the Jamar Fletcher's, and linebackers matched up on Wideouts. I think we've seen the end of those days.

I have a lot of faith is Saban, but i don't think it's unwarranted. Many non-fishfans will say that the guy is coming from college and is unproven. Look at Spurrier. I contend that Saban is very much NFL proven, at least as a coordinator. He led a top ranked defense in Cleveland, and in various articles Belicheck has praised Saban's football knowledge. There was one article which stated Belicheck supposedly said he would miss his weekly Saban chats this year more than he would miss his coordinators!! That ought to tell you something.

I look up and down the roster and I don't see any reason we can't be in the thick of things this year. Don't forget besides last year for the past 3 or 4 years we had been an offense away from getting over the hump in the playoffs. IMO we have a chance to be a pretty good team. Besides QB, the biggest impediment seems to be the drastic changes. There's a lot to learn on both sides of the ball, but I think we'll be all right. No reason we can't contend this year. I'm pumped:)

Great post. I agree wholeheartedly. We have some serious questions in the secondary and I am still not sold on our defensive tackle position but I feel pretty good about our offense. I think alot of people are underestimating both our QB position and our Oline. Feeley with protection, I believe, will finally prove that he belongs. The big question to me is defense and I agree that if Saban can use innovative schemes to keep offenses guessing he might be able to cover up our weaknesses somewhat. If that plays out we have a chance to contend for the playoffs.

That being said injuries will happen and I don't believe we have the depth yet to overcome them. But it still isnt August all our players are healthy and right now I am excited as he*l that we are going to surprise alot of the doubters

We Can!

We can and WILL compete for the playoffs this season.....IF the O-Line is at least average and Feeley or Frerotte doesn't turn the ball over at an astronomical rate like our qbs did last season.

Two years ago the team was 10-6. The ONLY area of this year's team that remains a question mark compared to that team is the OL. That OL of two years was below average and like I said, if this year's OL turns out to be simply average and is able to give the qbs more than a split second to throw and they actually open one or two holes a game, unlike last season, then this team will be fighting for a playoff spot. Write it down.

Our team can be competitiveif our O-line and D-line come through. If we can run the ball on offense and rush the QB on D, we can compete with anybody. Only time will tell.

The secondary will be fine if the front seven can apply pressure whether it's a 4-3 or 3-4.
