Why can't we contend this year??

It bothered me a little too, but now I hope it continues until the season starts. I like the element of surprise.
Picture this, the Broncos come in here saying all the right things i.e. the Dolphins have some talent and it will be a tough game etc. etc. But deep down inside they will be thinking that they are playing one of the NFL doormat teams. They will come in over confident, thinking of an easy victory (sort of like the Dolphins against the Texans 2 yrs ago). Then the game begins and Miami's defense, with all the different looks, starts to get to Plummer (IMO nothing special). By the 4th quarter the 100+ degree heat and humidity start to wilt the Broncos players and Miami starts to pound the ball inside.
I predict a convincing win on opening day and the rest of the NFL starts to take notice.

I believe so too.

I think watching the fins under the last 2 regimes we have sorta gotten into the mindset that we have to field the most talented team to win games. That's not the case.

You don't have to have 5-6 Pro Bowlers on defense to have a great defense. You don't have to have the best 2 corners to shut down opponents passing games. Look at the talent on our defense the past few years and tell me we haven't been underachieving. We have less talent on our defense than we've had in maybe six or seven years. With actual schemes, gameplans, and blitzes there's no reason we can't field a top 10 defense. Saban took a lot less talent in Cleveland and had a top ranked defense.

On offense we probably have the most talent since the Shula days. We are loaded at WR and RB. Don't think Saban and Linehan won't fnd a way to create matchup problems for opposing defenses. It's basically gonna be impossible to cover all our weapons.

Think base I formation with Ronnie at FB and Ricky at HB. You've got Chambers and Boston with serious deep threat speed, so safeties can't creep up. Feeley/Frerotte steps back and looks at Chambers and Boston matched on CB's, McMike on a Safety probably, and either Ronnie or Ricky on a LB if we leave one of them in for protection. Tell me somebody's not gonna be open.

Based on their play towards the end of last year, and the addition of houck, I'm not too worried about the line. If they play average we will be fine. QB is a question mark no doubt about it. If we get smart QB play (Frerotte most likely) no reason to think we can't steal a playoff spot.

IMO we are unlikely to contend for a few reasons.

1) QB: AJ has never shown much (here or in Philly), Gus has shown more, but is on the down side of his career. It is highly unreasonable (homeristic) to guarantee that either of these guys will suddenly light it up. The QB position is the most important single position if that isn't remarkably improved then it's not possible to contend.

2)New Systems: Getting everybody on the same page takes time. We'll probably lose some games early just b/c of lack of cohesion.

3)Safety: Saban's D relies on the safety position. We're hoping for a few young guys to develop here. Odds are they all won't.

Overall, I like this team and I believe we have more talent than we are given credit for. A realistic record is 8-8, but more importantly I want to see improvement and I want to see us acquire a QB for the future next offseason. If we accomplish those two things then I think our future is very bright.

im pretty sure the phins will contend for a playoff spot. thats the most i can ask for.

if somehow the offensive line can become an asset and defensive line can stop the run w/ some consistency, then i think the ceiling is either a divisional playoff or AFC championship game.

As much as I wanna buy in........ I still think of only two words.

New England.!

Two years, and we WILL take the A.F.C and the big bowl !

The biggest problem is that we are in the AFC East--that could be a stumbling block--whereas in the past it has been to our favour, not now--In any other division I would say we had a good chance to make the playoffs, but in this division we will have to work for it

AMEN my brother from another mother !.

I think this team will be in more games then it was last year, be fun to watch, and be a spoiler for those play off teams. I say 9-7. they will grow as a group this year, and be ready to pommel teams in 2006!:beerbang:

Lets just remember who says we wont make the playoffs and who says we do. Everyone is talking about the changes we have had and I can see that as a learning thing, no doubt, that doesn't mean we can't win 10 games.

We have 5 preseason games this year and for once, it will be beneficial. This team has too much talent not to be competitive! And I think Saban is different from the typical coach hired from college, since he has NFL EXPERIENCE!!!!
