What Sherman aspires to be
We probably didn't draft a center because we have/had 4 options there: McKinney, W.Smith, Hadnot, & St. Clair.

Houck will help us but how much improvement can he do with a unit that flat out sucked last year? We knew coming into this season that we had weaknesses on the offensive line. Why didnt we address them! Seth Mckinney has not done a thing his whole career. What makes it possible for him to be good now from the terrible performances i have seen. A coach can only do so much. We are relying on the coaching to much. I think that this team needs to invest more on the line because our unit will not be able to do anything without a good center. Seth Mckinney is definately not the answer.

Was there a better line coach that you think we should've hired other than Hudson? It's one thing to complain about something, but it is another to have a solution...

Bill C said:I think Houck was absolutely the best and correct hire. FA didn't have much to offer so the solution should have been a combination of coach what you have and get one in the draft. Houck is doing the first, Saban just didn't do the second.
Don't get me wrong, I think Saban had an awesome draft, but I do wish we would have gotten a C somewhere in Rds 2-4.
Houck, being as good as he is, should have been able to advise Saban that he needs at least one more talented player (not project) from this draft on the OL.
Okay, so now we are getting somewhere, everyone agrees that there wasn't a viable, affordable solution via FA. So that leaves us with this past draft right?Bill C said:I think Houck was absolutely the best and correct hire. next year: option #1 = Mike Degory (center, UF) with the 2nd rd.SMadison29 said:We probably didn't draft a center because we have/had 4 options there: McKinney, W.Smith, Hadnot, & St. Clair.

Okay which of our first 4 picks would you rather have traded for a lineman? We didn't know if Ricky was coming back or not, so we obviously would either trade down and draft the next best back availible, and maybe a lineman, but since we couldn't our first pick remains the same.
IN the second round I would've still picked the BPA, and that definately seemed to be roth.
In the Third we had Crowder, a first round talent that slipped because of injury questions, you could make an arguement for drafting a lineman here, but then Saban had the inside track info that Crowder was good to go, and I am sure there were no linemen availible in the 3rd who rated 1st round, plus Linebacker depth is a concern as much as line depth, so the third round pick stays the same.
In the fourth we pick a CB, which we needed, and because Pat had just left, and other than madison none of the other CBs had proven themselves, so again our secondary needed depth, after the injury to poole, I don't think anyone regrets this pick, but maybe a lineman in the fourth, but by this point is there a lineman that could come in and dominate enough this offseason to take a spot away from any of the current crew? Nope.
Nick and the team did everything reasonably possible this offseason to improve the line, short of giving up picks and players.
