Why Is Everybody Looking For the Diamond In the Rough at QB??????

Life being what it is, when you don't have a superstar at QB (how long has it been now?), you're always looking...

Not sure that trading is the way to go. No team will willingly give up a first rate QB so we'd be relying on a second rater coming good. And paying through the nose for that gamble while we're at it.

I think we need to draft a QB, ideally one every few years - even if they don't end up starting, they're usually better trade value than any other position. Given how long QBs can take to develop, it can sometimes pay to take 2nd / 3rd rounders and bring them in over a couple of years. Also, in this day and age, you can't rely on your starter being around (or being any good) for more than a few years so its wise to have a few cards up your sleeve.

I'd try and hang on to Brock Berlin via the practice squad if we can, for this year at least - you never know how guys like him will end up developing, and its not as if he's had much of a chance in camp this year.

Miami should offer their 1st rd pick for Rivers. At this point, the general consensus around the league is that we'll stink and have another top 5 pick in the draft. I personally, do not subscribe to that thinking.
However, If SD does, in their minds they will be trading Rivers for a top 5 pick in the draft and might want to make that deal.
I think the Dolphins will win 7-9 games and be picking somewhere between 12-20. That wouldn't be a bad pick to give up for Rivers.

Being realistic means understanding that even drafting a QB doesnt mean you have found your franchise QB.

Marino...Elway....Kelly...P.Manning these are "franchise" QB's
Pennington...Losman...Palmer...these are simply starting calibur QB's maybe one could break out and be great but right now they simply are starting QB's.

With that being said its funny how people here are posting idea's of ways to find a great QB the simple fact is they are very hard to come by.

And Brock Berlin is not the answer Trust Me!!!

well i think i will agree with you on Rivers ,but i would not object to signing Drew Brees if he is the one the bolts part ways with.

you guys really want to why we are all looking for the next brady ? its simple we are desperate at the posistion and everybody looks for a feel good story. I still think Sage has the phsyical ablitiy to be a good qb how good, I dont know .

There is something here that no one is talking about and That is how Saban looks at it. Because quite frankly, what we think doesnt mean squat because we do not run the team. Saban doesnt think a QB needs to be Dan Marino to win a championship. Its been proven time and time again. He wants a QB that doesnt make mistakes (which is why gus is the starter) and plays within the system and leads with smarts. He looks at the QB from mental standpoint as well as being able to throw the ball.

I mean we are literally waiting for any piece of crap QB that can't make another team, or trading valuable draft picks for 3rd stringers, to just bring in here and become a productive starter. I'm not really convinced that another teams garbage will be our treasure. I think we need to just wait and draft a franchise QB next year in the first round. It doesn't have to be Matt Linert, as I think he will break the bank anyway, just a first round prospect that we need to bring in here and groom.

Please stop with the brilliant ideas at QB. As fans we shouldn't be looking to settle with somebody, we should be looking for great player for many years. What blows me away is there are folks who want to bring in any QB who has a good preseason game right away. I feel like if I lined up with the 5th stringers and completed a few passes I'd have a shot to be the Dolphins starter, per Finheaven anyway.

amen...i did a thread about this very thing!!!!!! we need to be patient and wait to draft our own qb of the future!!!!:fire:

we just want someone.. anyone to claim the starting qb job with conviction and show they deserve the job

well said right to the point plain and simple.

This thread got me wondering about how the teams got their current starting QBs. Here is a list I created:

rank QB Team Round Orig team
1 Peyton Manning IND 1 y
2 Tom Brady NE 6 y
3 Daunte Culpepper MIN 1 y
4 Donovan McNabb PHI 1 y
5 Brett Favre GB 2 n
6 Trent Green KC 8 n
7 Drew Brees SD 2 y
8 Chad Pennington NYJ 1 y
9 Steve McNair TEN 1 y
10 Ben Roethlisberger PIT 1 y
11 Eli Manning NYG 1 y
12 Marc Bulger STL 6 y
13 Michael Vick ATL 1 y
14 Matt Hasselbeck SEA 6 n
15 Carson Palmer CIN 1 y
16 David Carr HOU 1 y
17 Byron Leftwich JAC 1 y
18 Joey Harrington DET 1 y
19 Kyle Boller BAL 1 y
20 Res Grossman CHI 1 y
21 Alex Smith SF 1 y
22 Patrick Ramsey WAS 1 y
23 J.P. Losman BUF 1 y
24 Kerry Collins OAK 1 n
25 Jake Delhomme CAR 0 n
26 Jake Plummer DEN 2 n
27 Aaron Brooks NO 4 n
28 Brian Griese TB 3 n
29 Drew Bledsoe DAL 1 n
30 Kurt Warner ARI 0 n
31 Trent Dilfer CLE 1 n
32 Gus Frerotte MIA 7 n

Don't get caught up in the rankings. I took a quick shot at a very rough order. I even put Frerotte last to subdue the cries from Bills fans about Losman being at 23.

Interesting notes:

Only 12 of the 32 projected starters were not drafted by their teams and 9 of those are at the bottom of the rankings.

Only 12 weren't drafted in the 1st round and 7 of those are at the bottom of the rankings.

Only 8 of the starters weren't drafted on the 1st day of the draft.

There are a ton of young QBs projected to start. I believe the current state is skewed because of the salaries being paid to the young QBs. I can't remember seeing this many young QBs slated to start at the same time.

Just because a QB is drafted in the 1st round doesn't mean he'll be a franchise player. Look at Ryan Leaf, Heath Schuler and Todd Maranovich.

Thank you, excellent point. Some of the best QBs to play the game came from the lower rounds and languished on some team's depth chart. It certainly can't hurt to look at some young guys this year, our QBs blow.

We'll trade you Rohan Davey for a 2nd

Hey, you did it for Feely

we've done it before and could do it again, and that is win with the run so i don't think we ought to be complaining about what we don't have and concentrate on what we do have, do you remeber the 2002 season we didn't have a Franchise QB and we still went 10 and 6
