Ok, so i picked 10 teams to compare depth charts (only off and def) from last year to see how many of them had most FA, traded players, drafted and udfa who where picked up by their teams between their 2011 STARTERS.
The thing is that most current prolific franchises do build by draft and here are the numbers i got:
PITTSBURGH STEELERS = ONLY 1 player who was not drafted by them or picked up as undrafted FA.
Between their starters, 8 of them were drafted in the first round.
2 second rounders
2 third rounders
3 fourth rounders
3 who were picked up in 6th or 7th round
3 Undrafted Free Agents
(You get the idea why Pittsburgh Steelers fans are in love with their FO now?)
GREEN BAY PACKERS = 4 players who came by FA or trade.
Between their starters, 5 of them were drafted in the first round.
4 second rounders
2 third rounders
2 fourth rounders
4 who were picked up in 6th or 7th round
1 Undrafted Free Agent
NEW YORK GIANTS = 5 players who came by FA or trade.
Between their starters, 6 of them were drafted in the first round. (counting Eli)
. 4 second rounders
1 third rounder
1 fifth rounder
2 who were picked up in 6th or 7th round
3 Undrafted Free Agents
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS = 6 players who came by FA or trade.
Between their starters, 5 of them were drafted in the first round.
6 second rounders
1 fourth rounder
1 who was picked up in 6th or 7th round
3 Undrafted Free Agents
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS = 7 players who came by FA or trade.
Between their starters, 4 of them were drafted in the first round.
. 3 second rounders
1 third rounder
2 fourth rounders
1 fifth rounder
2 who were picked up in 6th or 7th round
2 Undrafted Free Agents
And now the teams that have been struggling to become prolific:
DALLAS COWBOYS = 5 who didn't come from draft or as udfa
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES = 8 who didn't come from draft or as udfa
MIAMI DOLPHINS = 9 who didn't come from draft or as udfa
Between their starters, 4 of them were drafted in the first round.
2 second rounders
1 third rounder
2 fourth rounders
1 fifth rounder
2 who was picked up in 6th or 7th round
1 Undrafted Free Agents (CFL Player actually obvious who he is)
CLEVELAND BROWNS = 9 who didn't come from draft or as udfa
WASHINGTON REDSKINS = 13 who didn't come from draft or as udfa
As you can see there's a pattern imo, where teams who build by the draft tend to have better results in their future starting positions, and i think it's the way Philbin intends to start doing things around here.
That leads me to be a bit more confident in the way Miami is doing things right now, where as we all know from the media, our plan is to go get players from this draft who can produce in our future, instead of trying hard in getting them via free agency.
Maybe someone else can try looking for other teams apart from this 10, but i don't think the conclusion will be any different.
To sum up, i think building through the draft is the way to go and Philbin is leading us in the right path. Between Ireland and him, they will figure things out and we may have to wait and see what happens in this draft and how it translates into the field.
Ireland is a good talent scout from what i've seen him draft, something that has been debated here many many times and is not the intention of this post to discuss that!!, but to discuss about FA not being as important as the draft, unless you pick someone like Drew Brees in FA!
Thoughts???
