If you follow the beat writers, local media and radio, espn, nfl network or whatever your source of football info, it's amazing to me that some say this team is talented enough to be a playoff team and others say it's completely void of talent.

Certainly everyone has a right to their opinion, just surprising how one person can say there's a lot of talent and another looking at the same team feels the opposite. This is beat writers, fans, media.

Maybe I'm making too much of that. I would just expect the sentiment overall to be a little more in the middle and not one or the other.

Because an average team is like a Rorschach. It's easy to see it in a multitude of ways, since it's neither very bad nor very good.

Correct, an average team can look very good one day and very bad the next day, but the good experience is what lingers in the fans memory. For example, " I can't believe we lost to the lowly bills after beating the Patriots the week before". After this the normal person will always think they are better or as good as the Pats when in reality they just aren't.

Look at it this way, if a top tier coach like Belichick, Reid or Harbaugh were coaching this exact same team, how many wins do they have? Are they a playoff team?

I think this team has talent at: QB, WR, TE (Clay), P, C, DT, DE, and CB (Grimes)

I think this team is lacking talent at RB, TE (your one plus is an H-Back), T, G, K, LB, S and CB (everyone who isn't Grimes).

I think that where the talent is bad, it's very bad. Our offensive line and linebacking corps are absolutely brutal. Better coaching could help, but better personnel would help a lot more.

Skape, to answer your question, I am not sure Bill Belichick would get this team to the playoffs. I think Bill Belichick's record without Tom Brady speaks for itself. I am a huge backer of Ryan Tannehill, but he is not Tom Brady right now and this defense is NOT the early 2000s Patriots defense. Andy Reid, I am not sure... Andy Reid simply has a lot more talent to work with in KC right now. John Harbaugh failed to make the playoffs with a roster that is IMO more talented than ours. Ray Rice, Dennis Pitta, Torrey Smith, Joe Flacco, etc.

I think one of those coaches would be good for an additional few wins. Play the games that we got majorily outcoached in (both Buffalo games, Carolina game, Tampa Bay game, Jets game) with a good coaching staff who makes the right adjustments and makes the right calls and I think we win at least half of them. Definitely win the TB and at least the first Buffalo game.

Because the play of our QB brings down the whole team.

There is actually a good bit of talent on this roster. With adequate QB play this is a 10+ win team easy.

Why is there any debate? Just break it down as follows by unit: outstanding, above average, average, below average and poor.

OL poor
WR average
QB below average
RB poor
TE average

DL outstanding
LB poor
DB average

Kicking average

Special teams below average

The OL is so bad it impacts every other facet of this team. When you lead the league in sacks allowed, can't block for a running game, etc., a lot of other things tend to break down, including your defense. I think the talent is there at "most" positions, but the OL is so bad, it renders everything else irrelevant. The game has changed a lot over the years, but it's still won and lost in the trenches.

Bellicheck had Brady his entire career in NE and the one year he didnt have Brady he still went 11-5. Unless you are referring to back in the 90's when he was with Cleveland. If you are referring to that year I think it is unfair to think that Bellicheck could not become a better HC with experience.

Agree however many of the sacks were also the fault of Tannehill.

Tannehill, Hartline, Egnew, Miller? That's your talent on offense? That is what we depend on scoring? Jonathan Martin at left tackle? Who are we kidding?

Linebackers suck
Secondary outside of grimes is meh
Dline is good
Oline is league worst
Wrs are pretty good but overpaid
Rbs are below average
Qb is a developing 2nd year player

It's about a 7-8 win team talent wise. Gm is awful.

Brother, he coached about 20 games in New England before Drew Bledsoe nearly died on the field and they made a change at QB.

It was not going well.

At this time of the year, people can see that. The problem is the rose-colored glasses only come off for about two weeks here...

If you had done the same question before the season began, you would have:

OL average
WR outstanding
QB above average
RB above average
TE average

DL outstanding
LB above average
DB average

Kicking average

Special teams average
