Why is there such a disconnect about how much talent is here?

Because the play of our QB brings down the whole team.

There is actually a good bit of talent on this roster. With adequate QB play this is a 10+ win team easy.

oh C'mon man. We had adequate QB play, but we didn't have outstanding QB play.

What would you call adequate, with this O-line and running game?? 4500 yards and 35 TDs? I'd call that amazing.

Look at it this way, if a top tier coach like Belichick, Reid or Harbaugh were coaching this exact same team, how many wins do they have? Are they a playoff team?

Absolutely a playoff team.....no doubt in my mind whatsoever. 12 wins......the 8 we already had, and a win against the Bills, Bills, Tampa, and Jest. Possibly the Baltimore game and Panthers too. Good coaches beat teams they "should" beat......that's why they are good coaches.

Mike Sherman = Dan Henning

I kind of felt like this in the past but then Jim harbaugh couldn't beat the Rams last season in 2 tries. John Harbaugh lost to the Bills this season. Tom Coughlin lost to a bunch of bad teams. Even Bill Belichick lost to Joe Philbin and Rex Ryan more than once...

Go position by position and you will see how average this team is.

Undoubtedly. Imagine if we had BB!

Well consider that we were *almost* a playoff team and that most of us feel that coaching (specifically - specifically Sherman and Philbin) was one of our weak points.

Should answer your question.

Then again just about every average team is almost a playoff team, and I suspect their fans, when disenchanted, believe the coaching staff is at fault when those teams don't make the playoffs, regardless of whether that perception can be tested against anything verifiable in reality.

"Most of us" (but not me) were also wrong about Jeff Ireland's draft and free agency acquisitions before this season began. We haven't had a winning season in five years. We do not have great talent or good talent. We have mediocre talent. We have mediocre coaching. We have a Matt Millen caliber idiot as a general manager.

The impacting of coaching on the perceived talent varies from analyst to analyst. Many thought Welker was an average talent before he went to New England. Welker does a few things at an exceptional level. If you misuse his skills he is average. If you put him in a position to be successful he crushes defenses. Generating those opportunities requires schemes and complementary players. The major problem with the offense was a very bad offensive coordinator and a bad QB coach. A good scheme and a QB coach that could help Tannehill hit 4 or 5 more deep balls means a playoff appearance. I have been looking for someone that does a good job evaluating our players without the lens of the scheme. Someone that really nails the skills and weaknesses. I have yet to find them.

The bigger issue is the gambles taken to sure up the OL all failed. Martin at OT, DAllas THomas, Josh Samuda, Tyson Clabo, Lance Louis, John Jerry. All failed.

The Hurricane factor made some overrate what Lamar Miller was.

Our safeties (especially Jones) didn't play as well as they did in the past.

LBs were a disaster

As much as people want to rag on CBs, Nolan Carroll and Jimmy Wilson played better than you'd expect. Carroll was the 48th rated CB in the league (so an average number 2) and had the 8th lowest completion percentage against him in the NFL. Jimmy Wilson was the 72nd rated CB in the leage (so a solid 3rd guy). I think Carroll's injury against the Pats hurt him more than the team led on.

I do think that if we add a TE, find production at RB, and stabalize the OL the offense is ready to compete with the right scheme and if Tannehill is in fact the guy. Defensively? Gotta figure out the LB spot

Let's compare some of our players with league average. How many of our players would start on about half of the other teams in the NFL? Here are my takes:
Tannehill
Clay
Wallace
Hartline (as a #2)
Gibson (as a #3)
Pouncey
Soliai
Starks
Wake
Ellerbe
Grimes
Clemons
Jones
Fields

Like I said, we underachieved, based on talent on the roster.

There's plenty of qualified people, but it's another thing to execute. It's the players job to know what they're supposed to do, and the coaches job to get them ready and put them in a position to win. It's the GM and HC's job to get some people in here midseason if need be, like some teams have.

Our O line underperformed, for example. Yet, the starting lineup wasn't horrible. Pouncey and Clabo were highly rated. That's two nice pieces on the line. Incognito was qualified to be there. That's three. Then there's Jerry, who isn't great but most of the time would probably grade out at least average, and then the new guy Martin. You just wouldn't think, that they'd play THAT bad.

Receivers? You're paying huge salaries to Hartline and Wallace. Gibson was good before he went down. Clay was good. Matthews is pretty good.

QB? First round pick.

RB? You've got the guy who beat out Reggie Bush.

Tell me again why we can't score?

We lost the Buffalo game because the team could not run and could not stop the run. We lost to the Jets because we ran a little but did not stop the run. We had no pass rush during the final two games. The team has some talent built for Philbin's desired offense and some talent exists for a different regime. The linebackers lost the final two games in my opinion. Tannehill wet the bed against the Jets. Sherman showed himself incompetent in the last 2 games. Ross is very upset over the loss to the Jets.

We had two tackles on this team, not two NFL worthy starters just two bodies, with nothing behind them. If Clabo was so highly rated why is he signing a one year deal with us for $2.5 mill in a tackle starved league? Martin went ****ing AWOL during training camp and was apparently suicidal...HELLO, MCFLY!?! It might be time to at least bring in some competition at that point, don't you think?
