Why Mega Trades Don't Work In The NFL - Dion Jordan and others...

I think a better theme is, heavily investing in players when the team around them, and/or injuries, keeps them from succeeding right away.

Even before the PED's thing with Dion Jordan, people were already questioning his worth to the team. He was on a team with Olivier Vernon, Cameron Wake, and Derrick Shelby, all 3 very good pass-rushers, and it's a 4-3, not a 3-4 as he's more suited to.
Sure, you can make the case that doubling up on a strong spot is great depth, as the Giants have done with their defense for years, but the fact remains that signing a high pick to a deep spot means playing time is not going to be "a lot" in his first few years.
Also, he was injured, so he wasn't going to compete right away, delaying his ability to break into the roster further. I wouldn't break the bank to get a guy in this situation.

I liked the Dion Jordan pick when we made it, but after finding out more details about him and how much of a disadvantage he would have trying to get into the starting lineup, it seemed more and more like a really dumb selection.

Josh Gordon had some really bad QBs throwing him the ball last season and he had 1600+ yards. not saying Watkins is on that level though

That's a good point but Gordon is also a big receiver with a large catch radius. I will say that Brian Hoyer is a better QB than people think...he just missed most of last year with an injury.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I'm always an advocate for trading down, rather than up. The draft is just so unpredictable, it's always better to have more picks and reduce your risk than it is to go for that "one" guy. How many times can we look back on a draft's "sure things" to see them bust?
Who was that Wake Forest linebacker, maybe 4-5 years ago, went to Seattle number 3 overall I think? Considered the safest pick in that draft. Bust.

I agree in general, though there usually are 3-5 really great players coming out, who deserve a special kind of valuation in terms of picks. Outside them (and in some years I would include them) you just need to trade down for more picks. I'm also a believer in grabbing guys who fall in the draft, despite having abnormally high college production. Why I was really hoping we would take Bridgewater at 19. He should never have made it past the top 5 picks, only a pair of gloves caused his fall. In every draft there are between 5 and 10 guys who drop for irrational reasons and you really need to take home at least 1 or 2 of them every year. If you do, you eventually become the Baltimore Ravens or the Seattle Seahawks.

If Bridgewater had worked out at the combine and shown more of a willingness to compete he shouldn't have fallen past Tampa Bay. But Lovie Smith doesn't know much about the QB position it seems. I think Bridgewater, whether it was advice from his agent or not, hurt his stock by not competing at the combine and then following that up with a bad pro day.

Don't see this a some megatrade. The draft was fairly weak at top with some major players like Star having some red flags. In a strong draft two things happen. One we cant get that pick for so little and Jordan doesn't go top three.
To me this pick was doomed from start esp with the scheme . He is a pure 3-4 linebacker type. if we stay at twelve we would have ben better off. yay great value we trade up for a player that's overrated in the first place and we then convince ourselves its ok because we screw up second round picks. Yea so much better to scrw up in first

I really thought the Bills got fleeced trading up for Sammy Watkins ... but how could you watch that kid play and be anything but stunningly impressed. They got a future star.

Also, our mega - trade for Jordan would be different if we had drafted Lane Johnson like everyone expected. Or if we played Jordan as a 34 OLB like everyone expected.

The square peg /round hole thing is what messes that up.

To be fair I wouldn't have traded two picks to get Lane Johnson although at least he was a player we had a position for and would definitely have been a better left tackle than anything we trotted out

It looks like we have been showing more 34 than last year. Maybe when he comes back we will see him in a 34 role more.

I don't fault the Jordan pick. You can never have enough good pass rushers, just like the CB position. Elite pass rushers are hard to find. Leading up to the draft Jordan's stock was rising. A month before the draft, i was hoping he would fall to us at 12.
Wake is in his early 30's and Shelby is a good backup, so it wasnt a bad idea to target him.

Jordan was a good pick when drafted, bad pick now. The team is not changing his position, and he can't even talk to them let alone work on a change until he comes off suspension. He will have likely 8 games to prove his worth, adding 2 to get in game shape. Then he does something or, is not a Dolphin next year. It's that simple.

You shouldn't call Jordan a mega trade, Johnny.

JLC called it a mega trade once ... ONCE!

I sadly believe that Dion Jordan is never going to amount to anything. Who get's popped when already on suspension? He is just not very bright.
