Why So Much Cushion?!!

And when it happens in the regular season.. whats gonna be you bullchit excuse??

Sorry, but I totally f*****g hate it when they say its preseason.. relax.. it means nothing.. Once again.. and I say this for like the 12th year in a row.. IF THEY CANT DO IT IN PRACTICE.. HOW IN THE HE** WILL THEY DO IT IN THE REGULAR SEASON??

ok.. rant off.. going back to my sheltered little world

You are right they should be playing press coverage, very aggressive at the line. It is well worth the risk of breaking a hand or something for week 1 preseason!

Well get used to it cause we mostly play off man.... Some teams like to bump and run and some teams don't.... TBH with how they call the game these days Id rather be off and avoid flags...

Here's an interesting stat for you:

We were top 10 in scoring defense, the other 9 teams in the top 10 in scoring defense averaged 11.4 wins. Besides us the Cardinals were the only other team with less than 11 wins at 10.

The year before very much the same story, we were top 10 in scoring defense and again had the worst record of the other top 10 teams.

In two seasons under Coyle we are 5th in scoring defense with only the Seahawks, 49ers, Bengals and Panthers ahead. And those other teams all protect the defense somewhat with good running games.

It seems evident to me that Coyle's unit is doing its job. Actually, it borderline miraculous that our defense is in the same conversation as some of those other teams with us having such a putrid offense, those teams are all able to run the ball pretty effectively. We're hoping to be most like the Bengals from that list, a team that doesn't give up many points and is able to destroy opponents with the passing game once in a while. At least we have part of that equation right.

In my mind, there is a reason why Coyle's defense is the only one in that stat range that doesn't win. Why? Because they are a bad defense that doesn't contribute as much to winning football games as their yardage would suggest. It looks the same in yardage if a team gets one 50 yard pass play as opposed to letting a team run 10 plays for 50 yards, but Coyle's defense does the second repeatedly. We're terrible at getting stops and getting off the field on third down and that is why the lack of wings tell as much as the yardage.

Scoring Defense has nothing to do with yardage...

Yeah sorry but to me those stats on D mean that the D is doing their job holding opponents on the score board and the offense is not doing their job to help. Yards dont always equak points . I dont care if the d gives up 500 yards a game but if they hold teams to fgs ill be happy. The offense needs to score more

Everyone overreacting in this thread:

The problem with the Dolphins defense is not that we give receivers too much cushion in the defensive backfield.

The problem with the Dolphins defense is that our starting linebackers are awful.

Unless one of those young guys steps up I'm pretty sure that is going to be an issue again this season. I'm hoping for the best with Misi at MLB but I wouldn't bet my life on him being even adequate let alone great in there.

I think Misi will be fine against the run, in coverage, that's another story...

Ellerbe needs to be replaced immediately. I don't care if it's moving Tripp to MLB and Misi back to that spot. I don't care if it's Chris McCain.

Ellerbe stinks. I know Wheeler is the whipping boy here, but Ellerbe is the worse of the two. At least Wheeler is active and hustles to the ball. Ellerbe is the #1 reason our run defense is terrible. Hesitant, and even being slow to react, still often makes the wrong read.

You really just took any logic in his post and threw it out the window didn't you??

We are top 5 in scoring defense over last 2 years, the other team in our echelon of scoring defense average 11+ wins a season, we don't, and somehow that is still our defense's fault? Maybe the offense should try to score more points than our top 5 scoring defense allows.....crazy concept I know....

All in all our secondary didn't look great last night, but it seems to be Coyle's tendency to be very vanilla in coverage during pre-season. Linebackers again looked poor taking bad angles and missing tackles....oh well it's all just a teaser to me until the PATS on opening day.

If that's how our secondary lined up last season, then they should stick with that, because we had a top 10 secondary last season (and apparently you didn't notice).
