no clue, it doesn't hurt to pick up option. Pick up option and if he plays well this year extend him to a fair contract

I voted before realizing we would have to pay $7.4M, that high price tag makes it much more interesting.

1. $7.4 is somewhat high. I'm guessing Fins think they can get a lower cap hit if a long term deal can be worked out during the season.

2. Waiting on NFL to figure out if Pouncey will be suspended or what punishment is handed down.

Probably just waiting to see if he does something dumb before the deadline occurs. No sense in locking him in until you have to.

fifth year options can be steep but in reality better to take option then work from there.

are u sure its that much. So the average of the top 25 players at their position except the first three but don't know if that's just oline period

They can still work out a long term deal if they use the option. I think that would even give them an advantage. If you know you are already under contract for 2 more years as opposed to becoming a free agent at the end of the year, as a player, wouldn't you want to work out a long term deal?

I'm going to guess no, mostly because they could sign him to a long term extension for less than $7.4 million guaranteed next year.

According to a league source, picking up Pouncey's fifth-year option commits a little over $7.4 million to the 2014 Pro Bowl selection because he wasn't one of the top 10 picks in the 2011 draft, which was the first draft class subjected to the new CBA salary structure for rookies.

well any contract's first year is going to be less than that but not sure how exercising option hurts that

You just answered your own question...."any contract's first year is going to be less than that". I dont think that takes any explaining.

Pouncey would, barring injury or insanity, get at least $7.4mm in free agency. Unless there is so much conflict around him the he's killing the locker room, or he gets broken, you pick up that year.

You could always pick it up and trade him too.

Maybe they want to do more in depth investigation re the drug references (molly) in the Martin/Incognito texts. The new top level security and HR guys have only just been appointed. He also has to submit to a mental health assessment per the matters arising from the Bullygate enquiry. It doesn't hurt to delay some things a little and build some anxiety.
