Why was Randy Mueller fired from New Orleans. And if he was so good why did it take him 2 years to get back in the NFL.

I don't remember the specifics but the owner (Benson) got really mad at him for not informing him of some trade or personnell decision. The owner wanted to be kept informed of everything and he publicly criticized him before firing him. I read the Saint's owners quotes and once saw him in a television interviewed and my uninformed and very biased impression of him was that he was a total jerk. Yea, it's his money and team and he can run his team anyway he wants to but it seemed to me that he was meddling or slowing down personnell deicisions that he shouldn't have. He needs to let the pros do their job.

still if he is a good gm y did it take 2 years to get another job.

He may have turned down GM positions in the past for bad teams. Just because this is the only job he has gotten in the NFL for the past 2 years doesnt mean it was the only one he was offered.

Again, I had the very same question!! Thanks for clearing that up KuchaMucha. nice name by the way. And as for the Saint's owner Benson, from what I've heard he isn't such a great Owner. I remember reading something like he said he won't fire Jim Haslett because it would cost him too much money out of his pocket. I'm just paraphrashing here. So I think it's more of an issue with Benson than it is with than Randy Mueller.

Because alot of times teams will promote from within. In doing this a team may or may not get the most qualified person for the job. However, a team already knows if the person hired from within is a good fit with everyone else. For instance, last year Mueller was interviewed but Speilman was given the job instead.

Why Mueller was fired is one of the biggest secrets in New Orleans to this day. The day before he was fired, he was on a Saints promotional tour in Pensacola. It was widely known they were in the process of working on an extension to Mueller's contract. He went into the office the next day and was fired. Benson was shocked at the media and public outcry, as Randy was a favorite of both. Benson stumbled thru some lame impromptu press conference citing "communication problems" between him and Mueller. Several rumors have come out as to why he was fired, but none have been substantiated.

Thanks for the info. hopefully he will be good for us as well. Just as long as he doesn't tell Espn everything.

If I remember correctly, we've gone after Mueller more than once to be our GM, but we were turned down, probably because of how Pathetic Wanny was. I think once Again, Saban makes us more attractive place to work. I personally love this move, if, Saban and Randy get along.

You're welcome. The speculation is that Benson blew his top about something that hit his desk the day before because the firing was so abrupt and unforseen. As I said, it was common knowledge that they were working on a contract extension at the time.

Obidan, now that we have you here, can I ask a question?

What do you think about Benson? (not in regards to this case, but in general).

Personally, I think the Spielman haters should eat their Mueller mutton meal in peace and quiet.

I for one am not happy how this has played out. I'm not as concerned that Spielman was forced out as I am in the timing of Mueller's hiring. I am NOT judging EITHER man (Spielman or Mueller) at this time, so please read before you stutter and misquote me.

But, just as I was about to state "their are no major GM duties pending in the coming weeks" (to necessitate hiring Mueller so quickly while Spielman's dust cloud is still visible).... "ROOKIE CONTRACTS" belched in my ear.

It only makes sense Nick would want "his own GM" negotiating the contracts of Rookies (his guys). And, that simple fact settled the debate for me.

However, I'm still not happy with the timing... no matter what the situation was. I believe a period of 1 - 2 weeks of vacancy would have shown a little more class for such an esteemed organization.

I don't care what others think. In business, there IS a WRONG way to do the RIGHT thing. And, I could care less for the "it's Nick's team" or "it's Wayne's team" and "he can do what he wants" chatter. This is about class and respect. Even people who are fired or have resigned deserve respect.

I have mixed feelings about Benson. He did buy the team from John Mecom in 1986 to save it from being sold to Jacksonville. He was a good owner early on when he hired Jim Finks as GM, who had built the champion Bears team. He was given complete control of football operations. Finks hired Mora, and the Saints made there first trips to the playoffs since the team's inception in 1967. This was a good move by Benson as he knew absolutely nothing about the NFL. He just wanted to save the team for his home town. After Finks died, the Saints started a decline. Benson got away from the powerful GM approach, and tested several different management styles that didn't work.

Benson then hired Ditka and gave him complete control which was a complete disaster. We all thought Benson had gotten the team back on track when he hired Randy Mueller to be his GM and gave him final authority on football operations. Mueller was NFL executive of the year in 2000, his first year with the Saints. We also got our first playoff win that year. His early success was really remarkable considering the abyssmal team he inherited from Ditka. I think Benson had some kind of kneejerk reaction when he fired him and probably regrets he ever did but willl not admit it publicly.

Lately the negotiations for a new stadium or a renovation have gotten bitter and Benson has come off looking very bad because he is such a terrible off the cuff speaker and says lots of dumb things. I think he wants to win, but doesn't do all the things necessary to accomplish that. It could be worse, we could have Bill Bidwell as our owner.

Mueller has a rep for rubbing people the wrong way and for (or b/c of) self promotion). This has hurt him in his job hunt.

Good point, these are some of the things that are bothering me about saban as well, while I thought it was great when we hired him, I'm not sure about his professionalism, that part of him stinks to me. I know he's on a honeymoon with a lot of our fans right now and can do no wrong, but his handling of some of the situations just rubs me wrong...I hope this doesn't spill over to the football team, because I want them to win.
